1. INTRODUCTION University College, one of the prestigious higher education institutions in Kerala, was founded in the year 1834. Over the past 150 years, it has emerged as the pioneering Government Colleges in the field of, teaching, learning and Research. At present, the University College offers 50 different courses under theundergraduate,post graduate, M.Phil.streams and 12Research Centres leading to Ph.D. The college has 22 Departments in Science, Social Sciences and Language faculties with more than 220 qualified and experienced teachers. In order to foster the academic and extra-curricular activities of the students, the College has established a number of extension centres and various clubs including Education centre, Remedial Coaching Centre, Career and placement Cell, Women s study centre, Online Education and Research Centre (OERC), Nature Club, Film Club, Drama Club, Botanical Club and many more. The College has a special grade library, free internet facility at OERC, Optical fibre Broad band Internet connectivity in all the departments. 2. ABOUT CIVIL SERVICES COACHING CENTER (CSCC) Civil Services Coaching Centre was established in the College in 1960as an independent Sub Centre by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala providing free coaching to eligible candidates appearing for All India Civil Services (CSE) Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. It has successfully completed 70 batches of students for the Preliminary and main Examinations of CSE. CSCC is equipped with modern teaching and Learning facilities such as LCD and has well experienced faculty comprising Retired Professors and Teachers form different departments of the College as well as outside. 3. FACILITIES OFFERED BY THE CSCC Reference facility in the College general library during working hours. Reference section and book borrowing from CSCC library. Availability of competitive examination magazines and journals. Browsing facility at the OERC during college hours. 2
3.1. Courses CSCC offers coaching of two batches of candidates every year for the CSE. Corse duration is five months, from January to May and from June to October. Course structure is designed to give integrated and extensive training for both the preliminary and main examination. The centre currently offers intensive coaching for two preliminary paper of CSE I and II, General Studies papers of main examination. The centre offers guidance and learning support for the selected optional of the main examination. Course modules 1. Current events of national and International importance. 2. History of India and Indian National Movement. 3. Indian and World Geography- physical, social, Economic geography of India and the world. 4. Indian polity and governance- Constitution, Political system, Panchayat Raj, Public policy, Rights issues etc. 5. Economic and social development- sustainable development, Poverty, Demographics, Social sector initiatives etc. 6. General issues on Environmental ecology, Biodiversity and climate change. 7. General Science. 8. Comprehension, English Language, comprehension skills. 9. Interpersonal skills including communication skills. 10. Logical reasoning and analytical ability 11. Decision- making and problem solving. 12. General mental ability. 13. Basic numeracy (Number and their relations, orders of magnitude etc). Data interpretation (Charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc). 14. Indian heritage and culture, History and Geography of World and society. 15. Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations. 16. Technology, Economic development, Biodiversity, Environment Security and Disaster management. 17. Options offered Economics, Geography, History, Politics and PublicAdministration 4. ADMISSION 4.1. Mode of selection Graduate in any discipline can apply for the admission. The candidates will be selected on the basis of an entrance examination and interview. The entrance examination is of objective type (multiple choice questions), comprising 100 questions for a duration of two hours. Qualified candidates will be selected for the interview and admission. Ten percentage of the total seats are reserved for SC / ST candidates. Sanctioned strength is 40 seats. 4.2. Issue of Application Applications can be had from the office of the IASCC, Room No. 201, Botany block, University College, by paying Rs. 20.00. Applications are also available by post on receipt of Rs. 20.00 along with a self-addressed stamped envelope.
