What is a Pretest? Before a test question can be used in an Oxford online test, we need to make sure that the questions are at the correct level. We use students answers to help us check the questions. We look at the test results and make sure that the tests are the best quality. Pretests are free and easy to use in your lessons. 3 P a g e

How do I register to be a pretesting partner? Register To register, go to: http://www.oxfordenglishtesting.com/pretestingform 1. Fill in your Organisation details. 2. Fill in the details of the main contact person. (This will be the person who will use the system most) 3. Tick the levels of your students (see Glossary on p.31). 4. Click on the link to view the centre terms & conditions 5. When you have completed the registration form, you will be able to check that the details you entered about yourself and your organisation are correct. To make any changes click to go back to the registration form. 6. Click if your details are correct and you will see the following: Your registration is now complete. 4 P a g e

Next you will get an email to confirm you can log in. It will look like this: To start testing you need to tell us: how many students you have what level your students are (Pre - A1 C2) when you can do the tests So please email these details to eltpretesting@oup.com. One of the Pretesting Team will be in touch once you have registered to go through any queries you may have at this stage. 5 P a g e

We will send you an email to show you that your Licences are ready. It will look like this: Dear Ms Davies, You have been given 50 Licences for OTEB_R_A2_P01. You can use these between 02/04/12 and 20/04/12. Regards, Customer Support Team. Your licence number will tell you what tests you have been given. This chart shows you what the test is and how long it will take: Code Type of Test Time YL_PT02_A1 Young Learner 35 minutes OTEB_R_A2_P01 Reading 35 minutes OTEB_W_B1_P01 Writing 45 minutes OTEA_L_A2_P01 Listening 35 minutes OTEB_RL_B1_P10 OOPT_A1_TEST_001 Reading and Listening combined Use of English and Listening 45 minutes 45 minutes This refers to the type of test e.g. Reading and Listening combined, Reading, Writing, Listening or Use of English This refers to the level of the test you have been given. 6 P a g e

System requirements 15+ Pretests The information below sets out the minimum system requirements for use of the pretesting system. Automatic System Check Click here to run an automatic system check. This will tell you whether your computer can show the test questions and play the audio for the listening questions. You will need a current valid email address to register and get access to the tests. Browsers Internet Explorer (IE8) Firefox (15) Safari (3) The test delivery software requires JavaScript and pop-up windows to be enabled in your browser. You will need to have Adobe Reader installed to view and download pdf documents (available from www.adobe.com). N.B. Some of the brand new pretests may not run on all browsers. The test delivery software requires JavaScript to be enabled on your browser. Please contact eltpretesting@oup.com if you would like support documentation on enabling JavaScript. Some types of Pretest also require Java version 6 update 9 or above. Supported operating systems Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 MAC OS 10.4 and later Hardware 128 MB RAM Monitor capable of 1024 x 768 resolution Sound card with headphones or speakers Audio To play audio for the listening parts of the tests, you will require Adobe Flash Player 9 or higher (available for free from www.adobe.com). Display You will need a colour display. The test delivery software has been optimized to appear in a browser window sized at 1024 x 768 pixels. You therefore need a monitor that can have the display set to a resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels. Internet Connection To take a test, we recommend a broadband internet connection with a download speed of at 26 P a g e

least 256kb/s and bandwidth of at least 100kbps(16kb/s) per person taking the test. Users with dial up connections or broad band connections with a download speed less than 256kb/s may have difficulty listening to audio files and rendering some items. Young Learner Pretests The information below sets out the minimum system requirements for use of the pretesting system for young learner pretests. Internet Browsers: Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 14, Chrome 21 (tests are likely to be compatible with other browsers, but we cannot guarantee this). The test delivery software requires JavaScript to be enabled on your browser. Please contact eltpre-testing@oup.com if you would like support documentation on enabling JavaScript. Some types of Pre-test also require Java version 6 update 9 or above. Supported operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Hardware: 1 Gb RAM, Monitor capable of 1024 x 768 resolution sound card with headphones Audio: To play audio for the listening parts of the tests, you will require Adobe Flash Player 9 or higher (available for free from www.adobe.com ). Display: You will need a colour display. The test delivery software has been optimized to appear in a browser window sized at 1024 x 768 pixels. You therefore need a monitor that can have the display set to a resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels. Bandwidth: To take a test, we recommend a broadband internet connection with a bandwidth of at least 500kb/s per client taking the test. Bandwidth is divided between the number of client machines (a 2mb/s with 4 client machines will deliver 500kb/s per client). 27 P a g e

Frequently asked questions Can students pause the test? The test cannot be paused once it has been started. Why is there no link to the test when the students log in? If you log in after the time period has expired you will not be able to access the test, either to answer the questions or to review a completed test. In some circumstances it is possible to extend the pretesting period; please contact eltpretesting@oup.com to enquire. The test screen has disappeared and I m getting the message, Sorry your session has expired. Please refresh your browser window to continue. If the time limit expires without the student submitting his or her answers, they are automatically taken out of the test. To gain access to the marked test, you will need to press the Refresh icon on your Internet browser, or else re-enter the website address (www.oxfordenglishtesting.com/pretesting) in the address bar. 28 P a g e

Why is the audio not playing correctly? You must have Flash Player 10 installed on the computer for the audio questions to play correctly. Note that on certain versions of Flash Player (e.g. version 9.0.28.0) the audio plays at double speed. To solve this problem, please install the latest version of Flash Player from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/. How can I stop students copying from each other s screens? Pretesting should be carried out under test conditions with an invigilator present in the test room for the entire test. If there are more computers in the room than you need, you might also consider spacing the students out so that one sits at every other computer. How do we tell you what we think of the tests? Feedback is an essential part of the pretesting process, and once your students have completed the test we will begin to send out questionnaires. To enable us to do this, please ask students to enter their email address on the Test Registration page, and register your own email address when logging into your version of the test. Providing email addresses is not compulsory, and we won t pass your personal information on to anyone. I have a question about the test that isn t covered by this Handbook If you have any further questions, please email us at eltpretesting@oup.com. Glossary Pretest a free sample test students take. Licence a code that gives a student a free pretest. Session a period of time you set up on the system for students to take a pretest.
