Study at Cranfield Our full-time graduate programmes in defence and security offer the highest standards of education and address the changing needs of an evolving sector. The modular structure of many of our courses offers students the flexibility to study at their own pace and exit with a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Master s (PgCert, PgDip, MSc) qualification, or simply to study an individual module. Defence Acquisition Management * MSc, PgDip, PgCert Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements, in procurement, commercial or contracting activities, or developing and implementing through-life support or logistics solutions, this course provides the knowledge and understanding to develop the critical thinking skills required for effective management of defence acquisition. Taught by respected and widely published academics, and supported by senior ex-military personnel, MOD civil servants and industry leaders, the course not only develops personal and professional knowledge and skills but also provides access, through an extensive alumni network, to innovative thought leadership in the field of defence acquisition. The course teaches and encourages you to develop the skills to critically evaluate and apply a rich array of management theories, models, tools and techniques to meet your needs effectively in a dynamic national and international context. The Defence Acquisition Management MSc is focused on the wider Defence community and attracts both civilian and military students from the public and private sectors globally. 4

Accreditation The Defence Acquisition Management MSc course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and we are an Approved Centre for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). My postgraduate study with Cranfield has led to greater employability by improving the weaker areas of my skills and knowledge; in particular I now have a deeper understanding of practical project management. The most enjoyable aspect of my course is the freedom to explore and research, formulating new ideas and concepts from what I ve found. Edward Oates, current student Defence and Security PhD 5

Research and consultancy Our expertise combined with excellence in strategic and applied research has enabled us to make significant contributions to the world around us. This is proven in rankings such as the Research Excellence Framework. Research in action: Characterising the defence industrial ecosystem Identifying and exploring the networks and relationships across the defence industry is important in developing an understanding of the complexity of the routes to market, the exploitation of opportunities and the risks. By analysing those involved in defence with different techniques and tools, it is possible to view the industry from many perspectives, which is important in enabling individual actors to understand both their own interactions and those of others that they are reliant upon. Our research is using an ecological approach to define the defence ecosystem: with ecological analogies, it is possible to determine how industry changes and evolves, how there are different communities and species, and how they are connected in a much wider scope than simple supply chains or even supply networks. Visualising the nature of this broad ecosystem makes it much more accessible to all types of interested organisation. 10

Facilities Our unique partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence allows access to some world class secure capabilities while we are home to a range of facilities not found in any comparable academic institution. We can provide independent expertise, consultancy, research and prototyping directed by renowned academics and supported by experienced technical staff. Decision analysis and risk management (DARM) laboratory This is a virtual laboratory focused on the development of probabilistic decision analysis and modelling techniques. It uses decision analytic methodologies within simulations, exploring and applying techniques such as Bayesian belief networks to decision analysis and automated decision systems.
