2030 Agenda main features (1): Universal Agenda: a transformative agenda that involves both developing and developed countries alike. An integrated approach: UN member states have committed to achieve sustainable development in its three dimension (economic, social and environmental) plus governance. 2030 Agenda main features (2): 17 goals, 169 targets, over 300 global indicators (Eurostat is developing the European ones: 100 indicators to be finalised soon) Not only and environmental agenda: the social dimension in the SDGs: More than 1/3 of goals and targets are social Out of 51 indicators selected by EUROSTAT, at least 21 are social 2

Relevance of SDGs for Europe Some SDG related challenges in the EU*: Poverty (SDG1): every fourth person in the EU is at risk of poverty or social exclusion Access to health care (SDG3): 2,4% of EU population has limited access to health care due to financial constraints Access to water and sanitation (SDG6) Affordable clean energy (SDG7) NEET (SDG8):15.8 % of young people aged 18 to 24 in the EU are neither in employment nor receiving further education and training Education (SDG4) Others...hence need for multi stakeholders engagement to ensure 2030 Agenda implementation ALSO within EU *See Sustainable development in the European Union. Quality education and LLL in the SDGs 2030 Agenda, Paragraph 25: We commit to providing inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, technical and vocational training. All people, irrespective of sex, age, race, ethnicity, and persons with disabilities, migrants, indigenous peoples, children and youth, especially those in vulnerable situations, should have access to life-long learning opportunities that help them acquire the knowledge and skills needed to exploit opportunities and to participate fully in society. Education and LLL in the SDGs A specific goal dedicated to inclusive, equitable, quality education:sdg 4 4.3: By 2030, ensure equal access to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university 4.4: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship EUROSTAT indicator is participation in LLL* 4.7 By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development... * Other Goal 4 related EUROSTAT indicators: Early childhood education and care; Early leavers from education and training; Tertiary educational attainment; Employment rate of recent graduates; Low achievers in reading, maths and science; Young people neither in employment nor in education and training (15-24 years) 4

Education and LLL in the SDGs A specific goal dedicated to inclusive, equitable, quality education (SDG 4) but LLL contributes to achieve other (social, economic, environmental) SDGs (e. g. SDG8 on decent work and economic growth; SDG9 on industry and innovative infrastructure) HEI engagement with 2030 Agenda HEI can engage with 2030 Agenda in many ways (At National and EU level) Monitoring the implementation of SDG4 and its targets: UN HLPF in 2019 will focus on Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. Implementation of Goal 4 together with SDG 8, 10, 13 and 16- will be reviewed. Include SDG in curricula and raise awareness on SDGs Promote sustainable lifestyles and sustainable consumption habits Participate in SDG Watch national coalitions and contribute to SDG Watch Europe work.
