CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS ENGLISH 11 CP The following are the expectations and requirements for you as a member of this class. Please keep this document in your English notebook as you are responsible for the information. This class will be based on the premise that all students have the right to achieve and excel. As the teacher, I require appropriate behavior so that I may help the students reach this potential. It is not fair for any student to hinder another student from reaching his/her highest potential. For this reason, each member will follow certain guidelines which will make it easier for each one of you to succeed in English. SUPPLIES - Bring the following supplies to class every day: 1. ENGLISH NOTEBOOK - This should be a thick spiral notebook with at least one pocket folder so that you can store materials you need to save. Your notebook will be collected and graded periodically on completeness, organization, neatness and quality. 2. BLUE OR BLACK PEN (no assignment will be accepted in pencil) 3. 2 COLORED PENS/PENCILS-1 red, 1 green 4. 2 COLORED HIGHLIGHTERS- 1 yellow 5. TEXTBOOK OR NOVEL WE ARE USING 6. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK 7. 1 PACKET SMALL POST-ITS I will be spot-checking your materials throughout the year; you will be held responsible for being fully prepared at all times, and you will lose class participation points if you are unprepared. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR - All students have the right to attend a class which has a pleasant atmosphere based on mutual respect. In order to maintain an appropriate learning environment, I will require you to follow these rules: 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Raise your hand and be called on before speaking out 3. Do not talk when someone else is talking. 4. Do not use profanity or put-downs. 5. Bring all needed supplies to class each day. 6. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in class. 7. Do not get out of your seat without permission Violation of these rules will result in a deduction of class participation points or a lunch or after school detention (at my discretion). CLASS PARTICIPATION: Class Participation will count for 10% of your grade. You will be given a weekly participation grade out of 10 points based on the following criteria: 1. Consistent, ON TIME, complete attendance in class for the week 2. Positive classroom participation (see requirements below) 3. Complete preparation for class, including required homework, book, and supplies :
POSITIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION: Positive class participation is crucial for success in this class. Positive participation allows you and your fellow classmates to work productively in a safe and supportive environment. Positive participation consists of the following ingredients: 1. You stay on task and attentive throughout the class period 2. You volunteer correct, respectful, and thoughtful answers to questions raised by the teacher or other students. 3. You ask questions that reveal that you have read and thought about the assignment 4. You consistently use the Discussion Starters to ask or answer a question 5. You complete all assigned individual, pair, or group work assigned during a specified time period 6. When assigned to a specific work group, you remain with that group throughout the session. You do NOT get out of your seat and wander to other groups. 7. You follow all classroom behavior rules NEGATIVE PARTICIPATION: Negative participation will, of course, lower your participation grade significantly. Negative behaviors are listed below: 1. Failure to follow the rules listed above under CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR 2. Complaining about a homework or classwork assignment 3. Requesting to use your bathroom pass more than once a quarter 4. Any tardiness to class or frequent absences from class. 5. Use of a cell phone or any other electronic device 6. Having a cell phone or other electronic device on your desk or person during class *Consequences for cell phone use: First offense: I will take the phone and have security bring it to the administration office where you will have to pick it up at the end of the day Second and following offenses: I will take the phone and give it to security. I will also write an office referral which will go on your record and result in a detention or more serious consequence, at the office s discretion. Remember that three office referrals can result in a drop/fail from class. 7. Doing homework for another class instead of completing the assigned classwork for the period. HOMEWORK FOR OTHER CLASSES WILL BE CONFISCATED FOR THE DAY. TARDIES AND TRUANCIES - All students have the right to expect their class time to be free from interruptions by tardy/truant students. Tardy: Less than 15 minutes late for class Truant: More than 30 minutes late to class; leaving class without permission; out of class with hall pass more than 5 minutes Westlake High School requires its teachers to turn in referrals on the fifth, eighth, and tenth tardies. A student may be removed from class with a drop/fail as the result of a tenth tardy. A student is considered tardy if he is not sitting in his/her own seat when the bell rings. Tardies may not be made up, except for the 3 detentions assigned after the eighth tardy. ABSENCES - Excessive absences have a direct correlation to poor student performance. Poor attendance will negatively affect your participation grade as well as make it difficult to keep up with classwork and homework.
If you are absent from this class for any reason, it is your responsibility to have your parents call the attendance off ice between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Uncleared absences will become truancies after four days. Students absent for 10% of the school year will face SARB proceedings. Students MUST have a doctor s note after 14 days of absence, and MAY be DROPPED from the class after 18 days. The only legal excuses for an absence are: illness, court appearance, medical appointments, or attendance at a funeral of an immediate family member. MAKE UP WORK/TESTS - It is your responsibility to find out which assignments you have missed during your absence. Make sure to check my website for the daily agenda and homework assignments that you missed. I update my website weekly, so you can always check for required assignments. To find my website, go to the Westlake website, click on departments, click on English, scroll down for Waldinger, and click 11CP. In addition, you can ask another student for his/her assignment notebook and English notes. I am available Tuesdays at lunch for make up work, questions, or extra help. If your absence is excused, you will have the same number of days as the length of your absence to turn in work. ALL ABSENT WORK MUST BE MADE UP WITHIN A WEEK OF THE ABSENCE. I WILL NOT ACCEPT MAKEUP WORK AFTER THAT POINT. If your absence is unexcused, you will not be permitted to make up any work for credit. Making up missed tests will be done either in class on the day of your return or on the closest Tuesday lunch period at the teacher's discretion. Make- up tests will be alternative forms and NOT the test given in class on the assigned day. I STRONGLY SUGGE ST THAT YOU GET A CLASSMATE'S PHONE NUMBER AND CALL FOR THE MISSED WORK BEFORE YOU RETURN TO CLASS. This way, you will not get overloaded with make- up work while trying to keep up with the class. HALL PASSES - Do not ask permission to leave the room unless it is an emergency. Never leave the room without a pass. You will receive one bathroom pass for the quarter, which you can use at your discretion. You will not be allowed to leave the room once your pass has been used for that specific quarter. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: You will earn 5 extra credit points for each semester that you do not use your bathroom passes!!!!!!! DESKS - Each student will be assigned a specific desk. If you need to sit in a specific location, let me know and I will accommodate you. Do not write on your desk or you will be asked to clean all the desks. HOMEWORK - Homework is due at the beginning of class the day following assignment. Late homework will only be accepted one day late, and it will receive half credit. There will be approximately 45 minutes of homework per night excluding weekends. Long term assignments will lose a grade for each day late. Missing assignments will not be accepted after one week. If you are absent on the due date of a long term assignment, you must send your work to school with someone. ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic Honesty (Bd. Pol. 5131.9)
Definition: Academic Dishonesty is a deliberate attempt to disrupt the learning process by misrepresenting another s work as one s own. Dishonesty during tests or classwork includes unauthorized communicating; copying materials or allowing another student to copy; using prohibited notes or devices; obtaining prior knowledge of test content; and/or removing or distributing all or part of any test. Copying another person s assignment; providing homework/classwork for another student to replicate; plagiarizing or submitting a paper or project which is not one s own work; and submitting falsified information for grading purposes are also examples of dishonesty. Consequences: First Infraction The teacher will conference with the student and record a zero for that assignment. Within five school days, the teacher will notify the parent and send a referral to the appropriate administrator noting the infraction. The student will be placed on contract, with the understanding that a second infraction in the same or any other class will result in the student s removal from the course in which the second infraction occurred. The contract will remain in effect for two years from the date of infraction. Second Infraction The teacher will send a referral to the appropriate administrator noting the infraction. Within five school days, the parent will be notified, and the student will be removed from the course and placed in a Study Hall with a failing grade for the semester. GRADING POLICY - All assignments will be scored using points. Common values of assignments are: Classwork assignment: 10-20 pts. Quiz: 30-40 pts. Class participation: 10 pts./wk. Test*: 50-100 pts. Writing assignment: * 50-100 pts. Notebook check: 75 100 pts. Homework: 10-20 pts. Project: 25-50 pts. TERM PAPER: ** 300-350 pts. Memory Book 100-200 pts. Anything covered in class or assigned for homework can be included on quizzes and tests. Therefore, it is important to keep all loose classwork, homework, quizzes or tests (anything not written in your notebook) in a folder that you can refer back to for study purposes. STUDENTS WHO EARN LOWER THAN A C ON ANY WRITING ASSIGNMENT WILL BE REFERRED TO THE WRITING CENTER FOR HELP.IF YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO THE CENTER, YOU MUST ATTEND AND SHOW PROOF OF YOUR ATTENDANCE.
