K-12 WRITING HIGH ACHIEVEMENT OUTCOMES Mission Statement: Students who complete the K-12 Language Arts curriculum will demonstrate the ability to listen, speak, read, and write at a level that encourages and enables life-long learning. Kindergarten Writing Focus Area: Creating Written Language Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students who complete the Primary (K-1) Language Arts Curriculum will demonstrate ability to be active listeners and speak with correct grammar. They will demonstrate basic levels of reading and writing for both academic and personal use. 1. (1.1.6) Students will print neatly and correctly. Print using appropriate starting points and strokes. Print using a left to right, top to bottom progression. Print uppercase and lowercase letters with recognizable accuracy and comfort.

First Grade Writing Focus Area: Letter, Word, and Sentence Formation Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students who complete the Primary (K-1) Language Arts Curriculum will demonstrate ability to be active listeners and speak with correct grammar. They will demonstrate basic levels of reading and writing for both academic and personal use. 1. Students will begin to write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, word usage, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Recognize and use nouns, verbs, and personal pronouns. 2. Students will write sentences/short stories with main idea and supporting details. Begin brainstorming and mapping to generate and organize ideas. Write several sentences on the same topic. Begin writing compositions with beginning, middle and end. 3. Students will revise and edit sentences. Change and improve organization, content. Begin editing with standard English conventions. Use legible manuscript writing when publishing written work. Use established criteria to evaluate their own writing. 4. Students will begin to demonstrate the use of multiple forms to write for different audiences and purposes. (8.2.1) Students will write, using Standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, grammar and usage, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use the 8 parts of speech. Analyze sentence structure to revise sentence fragments and run-ons. Apply Standard English conventions. 2. (8.2.2 & 8.2.3) Students will utilize the writing process incorporating the 6 + 1 Writing Traits model. Apply knowledge of the 6 + 1 Traits model and use the 6 + 1 Traits rubric during self, peer, and teacher evaluations. Demonstrate the use of new skills taught in writing assignments. Follow the writing process. Use the accepted structure of different genre. 3. (8.2.4) Students will write for different audiences and purposes. Write narratives, poetry, letters and journals. Write to describe, using adjectives, similes, metaphors, and strong verbs. Use correct essay form to compose reviews, reports, and research. 4. American Literature (Writing) Focus Area: Literary Analysis of American Works Course Purpose: Students will develop a sense of self-esteem, and as a result, respect for the worth and value of others. Students will think and reason, read and write, listen and speak as effectively and as confidently as possible to meet the demands of living in a modern society. 1. Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
