PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP These guidelines have been developed for the purpose of clarifying the policies and procedures for the Department of Health and Human Performance Internships at the University of St. Thomas. The internship experience is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to gain observation hours and/or practical experience at a qualified agency or institution. The intern will work with a qualified supervisor at the agency or institution, take part in meaningful work experiences and will be evaluated by the on-site supervisor as well as the St. Thomas faculty advisor. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS EXSC 450 Exercise Science or Health Promotion Internship I (2 credits) These courses are designed to provide the student with an opportunity to observe, and take part in meaningful work at a clinic, agency setting or health promotion program. For the PHED 450 (2 credit) experience, students are required to complete 100 hours at a site that is directly involved in some aspect of the health promotion or clinical exercise science field. Students will be under the direct guidance of an on-site supervisor. Commonly accepted internship sites for the Exercise Science major include in-patient clinics, outpatient clinics and private practice. The St. Thomas faculty advisor may approve other sites. Commonly accepted internship sites for the Health Promotion major include corporate settings, community-based fitness clubs, health promotion consulting firms, and in-house health promotion programs, state of county agencies and vendors of health promotion services. Prerequisite: Permission of HHP Faculty Advisor HLTH 470 Public Health Studies Majors Internship (2 credits) These courses are designed to provide the student with an opportunity to observe and take part in meaningful work in a community-based setting that delivers health-related care and information to the public such as a medical clinic, community or public health center or agency. For the HLTH 470 (2 credit) experience, 100 hours at a site that is directly involved in community-based health care is required. Commonly accepted internship sites for Public Health Studies majors or minors include clinics, health centers, and local, state, or national health agencies. The St. Thomas faculty advisor may approve other sites. Prerequisite: Permission of HHP Faculty Advisor 3

COURSE OBJECTIVES The following objectives shall be met in PHED 450 for the Exercise Science and Health Promotion majors: 1. The student shall demonstrate the use of health, fitness, and/or clinical laboratory equipment as deemed appropriate by the site supervisor. 2. The student shall demonstrate an understanding of assessment processes pertinent to the clinical or health/fitness setting as deemed necessary by the site supervisor. 3. The student shall describe the safety issues, problems and components of an exercise prescription, as deemed necessary by the site supervisor. 4. The student shall develop individual exercise prescriptions, which are based upon exercise test results including modality, intensity, frequency and duration for both apparently healthy populations and clinical populations, as deemed necessary by the site supervisor. 5. The student shall understand concepts of legal liability and ethical issues, as related to their specific site and deemed necessary by the site supervisor. 6. The student shall have a basic knowledge of the cultural environments and organizational structures in which clinical and health/fitness programs are typically conducted. The following objectives shall be met in HLTH 470 for the Public Health Studies majors. 1. Present a clear and accurate description of the community health delivery process whether in a clinic, center or agency setting. 2. Describe the health conditions, concerns and educational approaches addressed at the internship site. 3. Relate concepts from assigned readings to her or his observations at the internship site. 4. Demonstrate a professional approach and relationship with clients and staff at the internship site. 5. Describe a basic knowledge of the cultural environments and organizational structures in which community health clinics, centers or agencies are typically conducted. 4

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES 1. You MUST REGISTER for the internship PRIOR to accumulating any hours at the site. The following steps must be completed in the following order to be registered for the internship. a. Pick up a copy of the Internship Handbook from the HHP office located in ARC 206. b. Locate a site for your internship. You must have an individual at the site agree to be your supervisor. Discuss with the site supervisor the purpose of the internship experience (see Responsibilities of On-site Internship Supervising Administrator form). c. Fill out the Internship Application and have the on-site supervisor sign and agree to the guidelines as stated in the booklet. Please return the Internship Application to your advisor for approval before you start working at the internship site. d. Your advisor will secure a CRN # for you to then register online for this course. Once you are registered for the course (watch Murphy), you may start your hours at the site. e. When you have completed the internship hours, pick up a supervisor s evaluation form from the HHP office that you need to present to your site supervisor to complete. Once the evaluation is completed, please return the evaluation form to your UST advisor along with your other materials. 2. You are required to keep a typed dated weekly log or journal of the activities you are involved in, your application of material learned in courses taken prior to this experience and your reflections of the activities you are not only observing, but participating in as well. You will turn in the typed log to your advisor upon completion of your experience. 3. You are required to write a culminating 3-5 page typed paper about your internship experience. You should reflect on and address the following: What were the objectives of the internship? Why did you choose to go to the location you did? What did you hope to gain from this experience? How did your previously completed course work prepare you for this experience? What specifically did you do while there? What did you learn through this experience? Did you enjoy the experience? What did you like or dislike about the internship? Did this experience provide you with insight into the sort of work you may or may not want to pursue as a career? Elaborate on how this was a valuable (or not) experience for you. Please reflect on the hours you spent at the internship and give thought to this final paper. Feel free to make any additional comments that you have regarding the internship experience that are not listed above. Please turn the typed paper in to your advisor at the end of your internship hours along with your weekly log or journal and the supervisor s evaluation form. 4. Once you have turned in the weekly log and the site supervisor s evaluation, you will be given either an S (satisfactory) or an N (not satisfactory) as a grade. NOTE You must register for the Internship before you accumulate hours at the internship site. Hours accumulated prior to being registered for the internship, WILL NOT COUNT towards fulfilling the required 100 total. 5

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HHP INTERNSHIP FACULTY ADVISOR The HHP Faculty Advisor will: 1. Approve all student placements of internships. 2. Communicate with the on-site supervising administrator, if necessary, to discuss the policies and procedures involved in the internship experience or student behavior. 3. Approve any deviations from the basic requirements as unique situations arise. The internship director and the department chair shall discuss any deviations of the normal requirement. 4. Observe the student at his or her internship site as deemed necessary or by invitation. 5. Review all documents from internship (work log, summary paper and internship supervisor report) and determine grade for the experience. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INTERNSHIP ON-SITE SUPERVISING ADMINISTATOR The On-site Supervising Administrator will: 1. Provide the HHP Faculty Advisor with a list of skills, competencies and activities that the student will learn/perform at the specific site. 2. Assume the responsibility for defining the practical experiences for the student at the beginning of the semester within the guidelines designated by the university. 3.
