JUNE 2018 Texas A&M University Department of Health and Kinesiology Master of Science in Kinesiology emphasis in Sports Physiology The M.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Physiology is a degree program for students desiring careers in conditioning and training of athletes. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the scientific background and technical skills necessary to evaluate performance-related characteristics of individual athletes and design sport-specific conditioning programs to optimize athletic performance. Either non-thesis or thesis options may be chosen. The curriculum also may prepare students for National Strength and Conditioning Association and American College of Sports Medicine Certifications. Advising Master of Science Degree Plan Information Sports Physiology 1. Carefully read all information in the graduate catalog related to the MS degree requirements and degree plans. If you are in the Thesis option, you will need to review the degree plan requirements for completing a Thesis. Be sure you read the most current graduate catalog available on the OGAPS website 2. http://catalog.tamu.edu/graduate/, and also review the Steps to Fulfill Master s Degree Requirements at https://ogaps.tamu.edu/new-current-students/getting-a-degree/master-s-degre e-requirements Most all of what you need to know and the forms to complete your degree plan are found on this website. Read the Graduate Catalog carefully before consulting with our graduate advising office or me. Nearly all common questions will be answered by reading the grad catalog. a. You MUST complete a minimum of 36 hours for your non-thesis MS degree. You can complete more, but not fewer credits toward the degree. b. There are limitations on certain courses you can count toward your non-thesis degree. i. No more that 25% of the total degree plan hours many be used in any combination of the following: ii. No more than 4 hours of 684 iii. No more than 8 hours of 685 iv. No more than 3 hours of 690 v. No more than 3 hours of 695 vi. No hours of 691 3. See the Sports Physiology degree option (to follow here) for specific courses required for the MS degree. With rare exceptions, you must enroll in these courses in the order they appear on the degree plan. Newly enrolled students are entering this degree option as a cohort, and will progress through the curriculum together, with the exception of the advisor-directed electives. 4. If you propose to take an elective(s) course NOT on the Sports Physiology curriculum, and you wish to have it included on your degree plan, you are required to have the course(s) approved by me as the chair of your graduate committee before you put it on your degree plan and before you take the course. a. Provide written rationale (usually email) for how the proposed course will contribute to your professional objectives, and will provide unique knowledge/experience not gained in any of the approved electives. b. A meeting with me may be required to discuss the course in more detail. 5. If there were leveling courses listed for you on your admission letter, you are required to successfully complete these before you graduate. These should be taken early in your studies, and best completed before you enroll here. Under certain conditions, these might be permissible on your degree plan. See the graduate catalog for permissible upper division courses and limits. 6. Consult with Tyler Fadal ( tylerfadal@tamu.edu ) or Carmen Hoffmann ( hoffmannc@tamu.edu ) in our graduate advising office if you have questions related to OGAPS requirements. Consult with me if you have questions regarding the actual required courses and curriculum.
