Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Ashbourne Academy JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: REPORTING TO: Leader of Pre-Examination English including Transition & Whole School Literacy Curriculum Leader for English SCALE: Main Pay Scale (post-threshold Upper Pay Range) & TLR 2.1 DISCLOSURE LEVEL: Enhanced Core Duties: Purpose of the Post: Raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the pre-examination years of the English curriculum and whole school literacy; Monitor and support students progress in both areas; Be accountable for the progress of students identified for and receiving intervention within the pre-examination years of the English curriculum area; Develop and enhance the teaching practice of others, regarding literacy; Be responsible for leading, managing, assessing and developing intervention for the English preexamination years; Develop and enhance the provision of extra-curricular activities within English pre-examination years; Be responsible for leading, managing, assessing and developing literacy throughout the school; Be responsible for organising and managing the English transition programme. Main Duties Operational/ Strategic Planning Liaise with the Curriculum Leader of English to ensure the development and delivery of intervention at the pre-examination years is robust and that the intervention is informed and supported by the curriculum; Liaise with CLs across the school to ensure that Literacy is embedded and delivered successfully in their curriculum areas;
Actively monitor and follow up pre-examination years student progress; Actively monitor and follow up literacy student progress; Be responsible for the control and operation of interventions, including effective deployment of resources; Be able to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans for all aspects of pre-examination years intervention which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the School; Work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans for all aspects of literacy which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the School; Be responsible for the control and operation of extra-curricular provision, including effective deployment of resources; Liaise with and support the librarians with the delivery and development of QEGs Reads ; Implement School Policies and Procedures, e.g. Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, COSHH etc; Be accountable for the development of extra-curricular activities across English pre-examination years. Curriculum Provision To be accountable for the development and inclusion of Literacy across the curriculum. Department Development Support the curriculum leader with the transition of KS2 students into the pre-examination years and to support the CL with the pre-examination year transition to the examination years. Support curriculum leaders where required with the inclusion of literacy in their curriculum areas. Keep up to date with national developments in all aspects of the pre-examination English curriculum and Literacy; the teaching practices and methodology; Actively monitor and respond to developments and initiatives in the pre-examination years of English and Literacy at national, regional and local levels; To collaborate with staff in planning the development of intervention provision. To be responsible for the development and implementation of the whole school policy for Literacy. Collaborate with staff in planning the development of extra-curricular provision. Collaborate with staff in planning the development of Literacy provision with all subject areas and to work on identified areas of the curriculum with relevant staff. Liaise and work with the librarians where required. Staff Development: Recruitment/ Deployment of Staff Undertake Performance Management Review(s) and to act as reviewer for a member of staff within the designated curriculum area; Make appropriate arrangements, when required to do so, for classes when staff are absent, ensuring appropriate cover is available and liaising with the Cover Supervisor/relevant staff; Support the school in ensuring an effective induction of new staff in line with School procedures; Promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective working relations;
Act as a positive role model. Quality Assurance Support the process of the setting of targets within the English department and to work towards their achievement; Support the professional development of teaching staff and learning mentors through example, support and liaison. Management Information Ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information, concerning pre-examination years English, is on the management information system; Make use of analysis and evaluate performance data provided; Identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data, systems and reports; setting deadlines where necessary and reviewing progress on the action taken; Produce reports within the quality assurance cycle for pre-examination years English collection of data. Communications Ensure effective communication, as appropriate, with colleagues within English and whole school; Ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with the parents of students. Marketing and Liaison Contribute to the School liaison and marketing activities, e.g. the collection of material for press releases; Participate in the effective promotion of subjects at Open Days/Evenings and other events; Actively promote the development of effective subject links with external agencies. Pastoral System Monitor student attendance together with students' progress and performance in relation to targets set for each individual; ensuring that follow-up procedures are adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary; Ensure behaviour and rewards are implemented for the students identified for intervention so that effective learning can take place. Teaching To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a standard scale teacher.
