The Opportunity: St. Paul s School is seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Development Office while serving as a key partner and directly reporting to the Rector. Affording a tremendous opportunity to affect change, the best candidate will bring vision and aspirational leadership to the role. The CDO will be positioned to elevate the Development Office s performance and productivity as it prepares to move through a strategic plan into a campaign. S/He will oversee a team of development professionals and will supervise overall office personnel activities. A member of the Leadership Team and a liaison to the Board of Trustees, the CDO will be responsible for building relationships and securing long-term philanthropic support. This frontline fundraiser will manage a portfolio of high-level prospects and donors and develop comprehensive annual and multi-year plans for major gifts, planned giving, annual giving and alumni relations. Joining the team at a critical time, the best matched leader will demonstrate the ability to motivate the staff toward success. Leveraging the school s rich history of high performance, respect and encouraging support, the new CDO will discover natural partners in faculty, alumni and parents. Development Overview Development is an important thread in the fabric of St. Paul s School. With almost 50% alumni participation, 10-year historic commitments averaging $20 million and annual philanthropic cash flow averaging $22 million, St. Paul s School is poised to raise tremendous revenue in support of the school for years to come. Position Overview Chief Development Officer The Chief Development Officer (CDO) at St. Paul s School reports to the Rector. The CDO is responsible for leading and managing the fundraising and development operations programs at SPS: managing annual and capital fundraising programs; leading a team of over 25 development professionals in annual giving, leadership gifts and development operations; managing a major gift portfolio of 100 150 top prospects; supporting the Rector and the Board of Trustees in soliciting principal gifts; staffing the Development and Trustee and Governance Committees of the Board; and ST. serving as a member of the Administrative Leadership Team. Responsibilities and Duties: Fundraising Serve as the school s chief development officer, responsible for managing 100 150 of the school s leading prospective and/or historic donors; actively engage in the cultivation, direct solicitation and stewardship of these individuals and families. Inspire innovative and creative thinking around fundraising practices, leading new approaches away from conventional fundraising when appropriate. Lead capital development efforts in support of strategic priorities, including comprehensive campaigns. Provide strategic direction and ensure the resources required to deliver best-in-class annual and capital giving programs that seek broad participation in the Annual Fund and total giving averaging $22 million a year. Lead a fundraising team responsible for annual giving and reunion programs. Work closely with the Rector and the Board of Trustees to develop long-range strategic plans and with other vice rectors and deans to execute strategic and operational plans. Lead team to plan and implement targeted and effective outreach and communication activities to expand the size of the potential donor prospect pool and to increase the level of financial support for the school. Leadership and Governance Provide leadership, foster initiative, ensure professional development and provide clear feedback for growth to the development team. Shape and advocate for strategic priorities that will help St. Paul s School be the best version of itself that it can be. Staff the Development Committee and the Trustee and Governance committee of the Board. Attend all Board of Trustee meetings. Serve on the Administrative Team. Work with other departments (Admission, Communications, Business Office, Alumni Relations, etc.) to advance the mission of the school. Assist with the planning and execution of major school events, both on campus and off. Attend school events as appropriate. Candidate Qualifications and Qualities: The ideal candidate for the position of Chief Development Officer will demonstrate: Personal identification with the School s mission for its students; Eagerness to engage with high school students and school life; ST. PAUL S SCHOOL PROSPECTUS 3

Experience leading a fundraising team in an accountable environment with performance metrics; Flexible and adaptable style as a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives; Interest in the cultivation and mentoring of colleagues and cultural stewardship of all departments; Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, Board members, volunteers and a variety of donors and potential donors; Experience with principle and major gift solicitation and stewardship day to day and in a campaign environment; Ability to work efficiently under pressure, meet deadlines and demonstrate strategic thinking and good decision-making, as well as a collaborative spirit; Poise and possession of strong written and verbal communication skills; and Knowledge of database applications, Microsoft Office skills. A Bachelor s degree is required with Master s degree preferred. The best qualified candidate will have more than 15 years of cumulative development experience (five years in a leader/manager position) in independent school settings. Appendix Leadership Transition: Amy C. Richards Interim Rector, 2018 2019 The St. Paul s School Board of Trustees has announced the selection of Amy C. Richards as Interim Rector for the 2018 19 academic year in recognition of her remarkable skill set and outstanding leadership qualities. Richards comes to St. Paul s School after 14 years as Head of the Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, CA. Her multifaceted career in education includes administrative responsibilities as dean of students at Riverdale Country School in Riverdale, NY, and as the head of the upper school at The Spence School in New York, NY. Richards is also known and respected by many in the St. Paul s School family. She taught mathematics at the School from 1984 to 1994 and directed the ASP in 1994. Kathleen Carroll Giles Rector, beginning July 1, 2019 The Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the appointment of Kathleen Carroll Giles to serve as the 14th Rector of St. Paul s School, starting July 1, 2019. Giles brings long experience and appreciation for the merits of boarding school life to the role. Giles currently serves as head of school at the Middlesex School in Concord, MA, a position she has held since 2003. From 1990 to 2003 she worked at the Groton School in a variety of roles, including dean of academic affairs, college advisor, English teacher and coach.
