Wednesday, 31 st October 2018 Dear Parents & Friends, It s Assessment Time YAY! Last Tuesday, October 23 rd 2018 was the Year 12 Valedictory dinner in Barham at the Tudor Tavern. It was a great celebration of the end of 13 years of Primary and Secondary Education with our senior students and their families. There is a collection of great photos from this event in this week s newsletter. The VCE Year 12 Exams start for with English, followed by a raft of other exams over the next 3 weeks. Next weekend will be the mid-semester break. Our Prep to Year 11 students have Monday and Tuesday off and return to the College on Wednesday, 7 th November. Following this week the Secondary school students will have their own internal exams beginning Monday, 12 th November. The teachers of our secondary school students have set some revision tasks for their students as they begin preparing for these exams. Our primary teachers will also be undertaking students assessment at this time. Exams and tests are assessment tools used to determine the degree of student learning, Primary students have tests as well. What exactly do exams and tests assess? They can assess many things and there is a place for them to assess rote learning, for example maths facts, spelling and key common knowledge, but exams are more likely to assess student understanding. Can a student apply their knowledge in new and unfamiliar scenarios. VCAA Year 12 exams set a lot of questions of this type, and in our junior years we try to develop these problem solving strategies by increasing levels of complexity, as students progress through the school. The reason for this emphasis has a lot to do with the types of problems our students will have to solve whilst at work. They rarely have simple one dimensional type problems, but often complex difficult types that are outside of the normal scenarios. Another reason for setting these types of problems is that it is the best way to assess true understanding of concepts and skills. Students who have practised and trained themselves by conscientious work in class and at home usually do better, and are more likely to succeed in their tertiary studies. Consequently their VCE exams will reflect this. Is it the best way to assess? The answer is controversial particularly because it does not help students who find it hard to deal with stress and are less confident of their academic ability. That is why in any subject today a range of assessment items are used, (unlike when I was in high school and 100% of your assessment was based on your exams!). The best way to revise and prepare for tests & exams is to do a little, but often. Students should make summary revision sheets and diagrams, they should use highlighters to amplify key points. They shouldn t go through revision questions just once, as this will rarely be enough. As parents, it is always good to encourage our student to do their best and to study. They often need to be reminded to be their best. For Christian parents it is always helpful to pray with you child / student as they prepare for testing times, asking that He will help them to remember the things they have studied and to be calm in the exam room. I have found it very helpful to pray at the start of an exam, for a clear head and the ability to do the best I was able to with the tasks given. God bless you and your family, Wayne Barker
