Page 3 July 23, 2007 2007-2008 Individual School Schedules Action Agenda Mrs. Rutledge made a motion to approve the 2007-2008 Individual School Schedules as presented. Board members discussed proposed changes to schedules for Piney Grove Middle School and North Stokes High School. Mr. Tucker, principal at Piney Grove Middle School, stated he requested the schedule changes to improve Piney Grove s enrichment program. Mr. Mendenhall, principal at North Stokes High, stated he had revised North s schedule to accommodate Mr. Tucker s request. He stated that student parking would be a major concern at North Stokes High School, if buses were parked at North Stokes High School instead of Piney Grove Middle School. Board members agreed to act on this agenda item and to address parking at North Stokes at a later time. Motion passed 4-1, Shelton. 2007-2008 Discretionary Days Mr. Shelton made a motion to approve the 2007-2008 Discretionary Days Schedule as presented. Motion passed 5-0. 2007-2008 Child Nutrition Bids Discussion Agenda Mrs. Cindy Marion, Child Nutrition Director, presented bids for the 2007-2008 Child Nutrition Program for the Board s review. Adult Meal Prices Mrs. Cindy Marion, Child Nutrition Director, presented information on a proposed price increase for adult meal prices for the 2007-2008 school year. Budget Discussion Ms. Moore reviewed the 2007-2008 Capital Outlay Budget and the 2007-2008 Current Expense Budget that has been approved by the Stokes County Commissioners. Questions and Comments Mrs. Rutledge asked for information on the Child Nutrition Program s use of disposables versus washables. Mrs. Marion, Child Nutrition Director, stated that she would not recommend a change to washables due to the financial condition of the Child Nutrition Program. She shared that there would be a start up cost of $34,000 for plates and an additional $5,000 cost for silverware. Mrs. Marion is unaware of where our old plates and silverware are located. She also estimated that 10% of the dish machines would have to be replaced, if there was a switch to washables. Mrs. Marion explained that washables are labor intensive, and disposables are a way the Child Nutrition Program can cut costs without impacting its service to students. Board members requested information on what the Green Schools located in Guildford County are doing and also requested that we find out what happened to our old dishes and silverware.

Page 4 July 23, 2007 Mr. Hart questioned Mr. Ricky Goins, Maintenance Director, about upgrades of concession stands to meet health department standards. Mr. Goins stated that if schools supplied the sinks the Maintenance Department would supply installation. Mr. Hart questioned Mr. David Burge, Operations Director, about bleacher upgrades at Chestnut Grove. Mr. Burge stated that materials would be purchased from manufacturer of bleachers and that installation would be completed by their NC factory authorized installer. Mr. Hart asked for additional clarification on the Board s policy which denies transporting students that attend Pinnacle Elementary School to the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church Day Care, because it is out of their school district. Mr. Hart expressed a desire to help parents and students, when it would not create a cost increase to the school system. Mr. Shelton encouraged board members to read the article on searching for a new superintendent in the current American School Board Journal. Mr. Shelton asked for an update on Meadowbrook School s renovation. Mr. David Burge stated that he hopes to have the pods ready for the students to move into, after their Christmas break. Mr. Jessup told board members that the Summer Leadership Conference was a great success and that the administrators had done an outstanding job. 07-08 School Calendar: Announcements August 16-17 August 20 August 21 August 21 August 22 August 23 August 23 August 24 August 27 August 28 Teacher Workday (mandatory for Elementary/Middle) Teacher Workday (mandatory for High School) Teacher Workday (protected for Middle and mandatory for High) Open House Middle and High Schools Teacher Workday Teacher Workday (protected for Elementary/High) Open House Elementary Teacher Workday First Day for Students/Early Dismissal Early Dismissal Coaches Training August 22, 2007 8:00 AM Location TBD Teacher of the Year Banquet October 16, 2007 6:00 PM Town and Country Restaurant
