Incomings Information Academic Year and Application The academic year is divided into two terms: winter semester and summer semester. Winter semester Lecture period Application deadline Summer semester Lecture period Application deadline October 1st March 31st Mid-October until the beginning /mid- February Please confirm this with the International Office April 1st September 30th Mid-April until the end of July Please confirm this with the International Office Study in Weingarten Requirements German Language Proficiency At the University of Education Weingarten nearly all courses are taught in German except the English department courses. Therefore, exchange student should have sufficient German language abilities B1 (GER/CEFR) in order to study successfully at the University of Education Weingarten. Solid English skills are recommended. Before the beginning of the semester, intensive German language courses are offered, especially for exchange students who have very little or no knowledge of the German language. These language courses continue during the semester. Before you leave Before departing your home country you will have to complete a Learning Agreement defining your study program during your exchange semester. You will find our course catalogue under Download. Please note that we try to keep the most current catalogue online. If the catalogue from the previous semester is only available, no problem. Most courses are the same for summer and winter semester. You may also choose your courses after your arrival in Weingarten if your home institution agrees to wait for the Learning Agreement. You will be assisted with setting up your time table. After your exchange semester you will receive a Transcript of Records documenting all the attended courses (grade and ECTS-points).

Cost of living The cost of living depends on your lifestyle, interests and needs. However, you should have at least 750 EUR per month. On average, the largest monthly expense for students is rent which is nearly a third of the total cost of living. International students can calculate the following expenses: Rent: 228 to 332 EUR per month (rooms in the student s dormitory) Student Services fee: 89.50 EUR per term Lunch in the cafeteria: about 3 EUR per meal StudiTicket (optional: this ticket permits students to use public transport within the bodonetwork):101 EUR per term In addition to that, you have to take into account expenses for copies, books or other materials. And finally you might enjoy the rich cultural program and leisure activities. Accommodation Exchange students may get a room in a student residence very close to the University of Education Weingarten (walking distance of 5 to 10 minutes). Rooms in a student residence are equipped with the necessary furniture and a shared kitchen and a bathroom. Rent cost from 228 EUR to 332 EUR per month plus a deposit of 500 EUR. Additionally, there will be a contract fee of 50 EUR. The deposit will be refunded if the room is left without damage. Rooms in a student residence have to be rented and paid for at least five full months (e.g. from 1 October to 28 February or from 1 April to 31 August). Please note that the last month s rent cannot be deducted from the deposit but must be paid in full. Bedding is purchased for 45 EUR. Another possibility is to look for private accommodation on your own, e.g. a room in a flatshare or an apartment. The following newspapers might be helpful for your house hunting in and around Weingarten: Schwäbische Zeitung, Wochenblatt or INFO (Der Südfinder). Apart from that you will find accommodation offers (rooms and/or apartments) on the notice boards at University of Education Weingarten. Health insurance In Germany, it is mandatory to have health insurance if you wish to study here. Without it, you cannot be enrolled. Germany also has a reciprocal social security agreement with some countries such as members of the European Union and the European Economic Area. If you are from a country in the European Union and if you have public health insurance, you can get this insurance coverage approved by a public health insurance company in Germany. For this, a European

health insurance card (EHIC) is needed. It is possible that your insurance will not cover all costs in Germany. Before your arrival make sure you know exactly what services you are entitled to in Germany. International students, whose (private or public) health insurance is not recognized in Germany, have to insure themselves in Germany. We will assist international students in getting (public) health insurance after their arrival in Weingarten. The coverage will be approximately 90 EUR (01.01.2017) per month for students up to the age of 30. Checklist You will receive a checklist of things you must do before you leave, during your stay, and just before you depart from the University of Education Weingarten. Please note the deadlines! Life at PHW There is no better way to learn a language or the culture of the country than to spend a semester abroad. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity and join us at the University of Education in Weingarten, Germany for full submersion in the German language. Not only can you brush up your German skills but you also walk through hundreds of years of history every single day. Attend classes in a former monastery with ornate ceilings and walls that have been standing for over 400 years. Catch a glimpse of the Alps on a clear day or take a ride down to Lake Constance and gaze across the lake to Switzerland and Austria. You can t be more in the heart of Europe than here! Why learn a language if you don t use it? This is a question that many students ask themselves when taking their high school course or their required semester at university. But for those seeking adventure, spending time abroad lets you use what you have learned and improve upon that knowledge.

Studying abroad gives you a larger perspective of the world and gives you insights into other cultures as well as seeing your own in a new light. It can also give an extra advantage for that job in an international company. But you will also enjoy your studies as well! The University of Education (Pädagogische Hochschule) is located in the picturesque town of Weingarten. It rests on St. Martin s Hill next to the largest Baroque Basilica in Germany. Now, the former monastery rooms serve as classrooms combining modern equipment and beautiful historical architecture. Some 3,500 young men and women study on the impressive campus instructed by 50 professors and around 100 teaching staff. The majority of students at the University of Education attend undergraduate courses in Education which are divided into degree programs for Primary and Secondary School Education. Additionally, undergraduate courses in Pre-Primary Education and Media and Education Management as well as graduate studies in Educational Science, School Development, Alphabetization and Basic Education and Vocational School Education are offered. In 1962, the University of Education Weingarten changed their name from the Institute of Education which was founded in 1949. Since then, the University of Education has enjoyed partnerships with regional schools and institutions, making it possible to exchange knowledge between the college classroom and practical situations. Internships and other projects enable students to apply and integrate their academic knowledge through practical experience both at home and abroad. The University of Education has flourishing international partnerships with more than 35 universities and the list is growing. This is to promote the exchange of scholars, students, ideas, and intercultural experience. All in all, Weingarten offers many advantages for an education that combines theory and practice here and abroad. Come join us and let us welcome you to the Pädagogische Hochschule in Weingarten, Germany. Information on the area: Weingarten is located approx. two hours from the Stuttgart airport, 2 ½ from Munich airport and can even be reached by train and boat across Lake Constance from Zurich, Switzerland in 90 minutes. We are situated in southern Germany not far from Austria and Switzerland which can be reached by car or train in 30 40 minutes. Weingarten is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, the home of Daimler AG, SAP and Porsche to name a few.

Take a trip to Munich by train in just 2 ½ hours and enjoy a day in Bavaria. Take a train to the west and explore the depths of the Black Forest and all it has to offer. And Paris is just a 5 hour high speed train ride from Ulm! Courses and Departments At the University of Education Weingarten, exchange students may select the courses of their choice.
