FACULTY OF THEOLOGY EXPLORE QUESTIONS OF FAITH AND INTELLECT

THE STUDY OF THEOLOGY AT HURON provides a solid grounding in the rich history of diverse religious beliefs and practices, emphasizing how these traditions continue to impact contemporary life and culture. It s all done in a context that encourages discussion, reflection, and research. AT HURON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, WE ARE FIRMLY CONVINCED THERE IS NO FINER PREPARATION FOR CITIZENS OF A FREE SOCIETY THAN TO BE TRAINED TO THINK CRITICALLY, ASK QUESTIONS, AND RELENTLESSLY PURSUE WISE AND JUST ANSWERS. We draw on our roots in the study of religious traditions, social justice, and spiritual and ethical thought to challenge our students to be Leaders with Heart thinking not just about themselves, but the world beyond them. In the Faculty of Theology, we provide theological education of the highest standards through our undergraduate, professional, and graduate degree programs, as well as non-credit and continuing education courses. Our programs form and empower our students for compassionate service and principled leadership in their own faith tradition, in the academy, and in our local and global communities. Our graduates go on to succeed in a wide range of careers in community and public service, teaching, ministry, advocacy and social justice, foreign service, government and law, among others. THE HURON ADVANTAGE ROSEMARY PARKER MDIV 17 Priest, Anglican Diocese of Ottawa Huron s Faculty of Theology brings together individuals of all ages with different backgrounds, beliefs, and levels of experience in work, academics, and church. This diversity allows us to have dynamic discussions about what it means to be a person of faith in the world, and to make long-lasting connections with people who challenge and inspire us. A PROUD LEGACY Huron has been educating Leaders with Heart for over 150 years. Established as an Anglican theological college in 1863 by Bishop Benjamin Cronyn, Huron is the founding institution of Western University. Our alumni are making outstanding contributions in every aspect of civil society around the world. ESTEEMED FACULTY The Faculty of Theology has more than 12 professors with degrees from some of the world s most prestigious universities. Their research expertise is vast, ranging from philosophy and ethics, to Islamic studies, the origins of the Gospels, and politics and religion in Reformation-era England. Several are ordained ministers. INCLUSIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY As an intentionally small campus, Huron offers small class sizes, engaged faculty who provide one-on-one mentorship, no waiting for staff support, and a close-knit community of peers who truly care about your success. Our small size supports an active and engaged learning environment that nurtures our students individual gifts and helps them achieve their aspirations. 1:8 Average faculty-to-student ratio PART OF WESTERN UNIVERSITY Huron students enjoy all the benefits of also being Western students, including access to libraries, a city bus pass, health services, athletic facilities, and over 200 student clubs and organizations. Western s campus is just a few minutes walk from Huron. HURON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE FACULTY OF THEOLOGY 5

OUR PROGRAMS We welcome students of all denominations and faith traditions. For the MTS, MDiv, and MA (Theology) degree programs, part-time and full-time study is possible. Financial aid is available to students who qualify. BACHELOR OF ARTS (Religion & Theology) Students can pursue a Major or Minor in Religion & Theology, combine it with a minor, major, or specialization from another Huron program, or a major or minor in many of the programs offered at Western, Brescia, or King s. huronuc.ca/rel&theo I was guided by instructors who truly cared and who wanted me to think. Elorah Fangrad, BTh 16 Pursuing graduate studies in Indigenous wellness and addiction prevention MASTER OF ARTS (Theology) A two-year graduate research degree culminating in a thesis that prepares students for doctoral studies and also serves as a terminal degree with intensive research opportunities. CHRIS MEDLAND MTS 13, MA 15 PhD candidate, University of Edinburgh Huron provided all the financial support possible to make a married, low-income student like myself able to fully take part in academic life. The tremendous teaching and mentorship I received set me up to receive a full scholarship to the University of Edinburgh for my PhD. Without Huron, this would have never occurred. MASTER OF THEOLOGICAL STUDIES (MTS) A two-year post-baccalaureate degree that prepares students of diverse faith traditions for theological engagement and leadership in a variety of settings. There are various options to specialize, including a concentration in Islamic Studies. Admission requirements: Bachelor s degree in any subject area huronuc.ca/mts MASTER OF DIVINITY (MDiv) A three-year professional ministry degree that prepares students for ordained ministry as well as general pastoral and religious leadership in church, parish, chaplaincy, and other settings. Admission requirements: Bachelor s degree in any subject area huronuc.ca/mdiv The Faculty is a citadel of excellence and Huron s longstanding traditions set it apart. I would recommend Huron because of the quality of education it offers, the level of spiritual development it fosters, the excellent professors, and the school s library whose staff and resources help ensure students success. John Olufemi Adeyemi, 3 rd Year student, MDiv Lay pastor in Nigeria for 20 years LICENTIATE IN THEOLOGY & CONTINUING EDUCATION The LTh is a diploma program for those exploring ministry in different forms, and for those wishing to study theology for their own interest and development. CENTRE FOR PUBLIC THEOLOGY Founded in 2007, The Centre for Public Theology advances theological and interdisciplinary research in areas of public concern. Through it, Huron attracts research funding, has hosted four national conferences, and has been active in the Global Network for Public Theology, a partnership of institutions teaching theology in Australasia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The Centre s work to date has focused mainly on the Afghanistan war, HIV-AIDS, and the Financial Crisis of 2008; its current project concerns the ethics and social implications of physician-assisted suicide. BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Huron is an affiliated member of the Toronto School of Theology, the largest ecumenical consortium in North America. We are recognized by the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada for the training of ordinands. Huron is committed to providing students with opportunities to connect with the local and global community through research projects, internships, volunteer positions, and international study exchanges. Our MDiv students each complete a Transcultural Learning Experience that can include field education or independent study. The Experiences have been worldwide, and funding is available to defray costs of travel and accommodation.
