Prerequisites: You must score a 2 or 3 on the LRC placement exam or have completed LRC 99 with a grade of C or better to enroll in this course. Course Materials: Required: ALEKS- Online course component. You can buy ALEKS ACCESS CODE online or in the bookstore. Please check out WWW.ALEKS.COM for a free tutorial. CLASS CODE: NJTWH-N4NXG Optional: Mark Dugopolski, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, 3rd Edition Calculator: No calculators are allowed in this course. Course Objectives: An introduction to the basic techniques and functions of mathematics. This course is especially recommended for those students who need to brush up due to a shaky high school preparation or for those who haven t had a mathematics course in several years. Topics include linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations; polynomials; and rational functions and their inverses, including the exponential and the logarithm. Material to be Covered: Review Chapters: Ch. 4 (Exponents and Polynomials) Ch. 5 (Factoring) Ch. 7 (Systems of Linear equations) 1

Main Chapters: Ch. 6 (Rational Expressions) Ch. 9 (Radicals and Rational exponents) Ch. 10 (Quadratic Equations and Inequalities) Ch. 11 (Functions) Ch. 12 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions) Homework: Students will be expected to complete two online homework asignment through ALEKS per week. There are total 9 homework assignments, the lowest graded homework will be dropped. Students should also spend at least 9 hours per week doing practice problems through ALEKS. Students have to complete the homework by their due dates in order to get full credit. A schedule of homework due dates is included on this syllabus. Quizzes: Students are expected to complete one quiz per week. There will be total five quizzes. Quizzes are to be completed individually. Discussing or collaborating with anyone other than the instructor will result in a zero for that quiz. The Quizzes will be posted on blackboard under Course Documents every Friday by 5 pm. Student have to print and complete the quiz by hand. Student must show all the relevant work in their quiz. Completed quiz should be scanned and e-mailed to the instructor in PDF format at seratay1@umbc.edu by Monday midnight, 12:00 am. Late quizzes are not acceptable. 2

Final Exam: All students are expected to be present for CUMULATIVE FINAL EXAM at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 1st at UMBC. (Location: TBA) You should request a make-up exam WITHIN 24 HOURS of the missed exam by e- mailing the instructor. If you have a known conflict in advance please notify your instructor as soon as possible. Make-up tests are only allowed under reasonable circumstances (illness, car trouble, work, family obligation, religuous reasons, etc.) Unexcused absences will receive a zero for the test. Be aware that your instructor may request documentation of your reasonable circumstance. Tips on Using ALEKS: Under the REVIEW tab you can choose content to review and also access PDF files of the textbook sections or video lectures for certain textbook sections. While working HW problems you can view an example problem to help you. Use the PIE CHART for practice on topics you havent mastered yet.
