Recreation/Fitness Ongoing Fitness Opportunities Hall Walking Available school days 6:15-7:15 a.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. Please enter at the flag pole doors and sign in on the Community Ed. board. Follow the designated routes. Open Weight Room Available school mornings 6:15-7:15. See school website for details. Family Open Gym Wednesday evenings beginning January 6 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. PARENTS MUST ACCOMPANY ALL STUDENTS. Red Zone Gym (come in through doors by flagpole). Please bring your own basketball. Register NOW!! Karate Karate lessons are run through Red Dragon Academy. Lessons will be offered for ages 6 and over. Participants pay a monthly fee to Red Dragon Academy which allows them to participate in the program at Elmwood and the Saturday morning classes in the Menomonie studio. After school students will learn the same techniques and curriculum as students at the Red Dragon Academy in Menomonie, and will also be eligible to promote through the belt ranks if they would like. Test notifications will be handed out to students when they are ready for promotion, outlining test date, time, and fees. A non-refundable registration fee is required at sign up. The registration fee covers the cost of the traditional Karate uniforms required for the classes. If you have any questions, please call Ms. Drenckhahn with the Red Dragon Academy at 715-235-1122. Wednesday Night Workouts Getting bored with your same old workout routine? Come and join us for a variety of workouts. We will be using different workout videos each week to spark enthusiasm about being fit. The videos will be projected on the gym wall for everyone to follow along. Bring a friend along, and have fun while getting fit! This class is for teens and adults. Are you looking for a night to get out of the house and have fun with your toddler while they release built up energy? Here is your opportunity to have fun and get fit at the same time. Kristel Flesberg, along with the Middle School Student Council, is offering opportunities for parent/toddler open gyms. There will be organized activities along with free play. Come prepared to burn up energy and have some fun!! Dates: Wednesdays March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Time: 6:00-7:00 p.m. Who: Adults and children 5 and under Place: Lien Gym Registration Deadline: February 24 Dance for Boys and Girls Grades 3-5 This class will introduce basic dance skills in ballet, modern, jazz, and hip hop in a fun and active atmosphere. Dancers will learn how eight counts are used to keep time. I will teach using original choreography and we will perform for families at the final class. We will also use current songs and dances for warm-ups and discussions. Dance is a great way to exercise and express yourself! I have a background in studio dance, where I performed from the time I was five until I attended high school. I then danced on my high school dance team. **Shoes required flats for girls and dress shoes for boys. Tennis shoes will not work because soles will stick to the floor. We will work with materials in the traditional studio arts of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. We will also create crafts focused on holidays, wearable and home decor. Each project will be started and completed during the 1 hour session. This is a drop in class and you can attend anytime during the dates listed. You must purchase a punch card prior to attending. There are five punches per card making it good for 5 sessions; the card cost is $10.00. Wine and Canvas Painting Class Date: Thursday, March 31 Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Location: Elmwood Auditorium Cost: $35 Registration Deadline: Thursday, March 24 Class Minimum of 10 Please join us for an evening canvas painting class. The class is presented by The Paint Shack. It will be a fun-filled evening of painting, while we all paint the same picture, yet make them different by expressing our individualism. You can choose the colors and design the painting to your individual liking. Check out The Paint Shack on Facebook to see examples of what other classes have done. We will be painting the picture shown here. If you would like to enjoy a little wine while working on your painting, please feel free to bring some along. Beginning Sewing Would you like to learn the basics of sewing with a machine? Come and work with Julia Gump. Julia has taught private sewing lessons and has also tailored costumes. In this class you will learn the basics of sewing and make a tote bag, with a zipper and pockets for technique. There will be three class sessions. The first will be a meeting to look into the project and figure out what material and supplies will be needed. Participants will purchase their own material and be ready to start sewing in the next two sessions. If you have a sewing machine feel free to bring it to the last two classes, otherwise there will be one provided for you. The Wine Lights Use your creativity to produce a stunning, colorful, lighted display for any room in your home. You will use a clean, empty wine bottle with the bottom cut out and fill the outside with pieces of colored glass (whatever colors and design you d like). To complete the project you will fill the bottle with twinkle lights. All supplies are included in the cost. Participants must be at least 10 years old. 10-16 year olds must have parent with. Date: Tuesday, April 19 Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Cost: $26 Location: EHS Family Consumer Ed Classroom Instructor: Mary Lu Bird Registration Deadline: Tuesday, April 12 **Class Minimum 4 participants - Maximum 12 participant Gardening Pruning Ornamental and Fruit Trees Confused about how, when, and why to prune your landscape plants and fruit trees? Pruning can be scary, but this class will build your confidence when it comes to wielding your loppers! We will talk about different kinds of shrubs, and how to prune them for plant health and longevity. We will also talk about yard trees and fruit trees, and how they should be pruned for the best appearance or fruit production. Date: Thursday, March 10 Location: EHS Science Classroom Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Registration Deadline: Thursday, March 3 Instructor: Diana Alfuth, Horticulture Educator Top Landscaping Mistakes We put a lot of time and effort into our yards and landscapes, so we want them to look great for a long time! If you do things right, you can sit back and enjoy your yard for years, but if you make mistakes, you may have to redo things quickly. This class will talk about common mistakes made during landscaping and how to do things correctly. Learn about ways to lower maintenance and keep your yard and landscaping looking great! Technology Open Computer Lab The Elmwood High School Computer Lab will be available to the public for use on Wednesday evenings. You can use the lab to surf the net, complete school work, or for any of your other computing needs. Printing will be available, but will be limited to 20 pages and there will be a fee of 15 cents per page. Students 6 th Grade and below must have a parent with at all times. Dates: Wednesdays beginning January 6 Time: 5:00 8:00 p.m. Supervisor: Dick Jones Computer Programming Club: Coding for Elementary Students Does your child like technology or video games? This class will help open their minds to career opportunities in computer science. We will be using www.code.org to explore the limitless world of computing. This class will have a blend of online, self-guided and self-paced tutorials along with unplugged activities which require no computer at all. Why Computer Science? Every 21 st century student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career. Software and computers are everywhere www.code.org This club is for children grades 2 & up. The students who participated last session will be able to take off from where they ended and the newcomers will start at the beginning. This is a selfpaced coding program where the students will trouble shoot their way into learning and creating code. After much learning and practicing, students may even be able to create their own video games. One goal is to have students trouble shoot together to help solve problems. If you enjoy working on computers and playing video games, this club is for you! Please join. We will spend one class session on each topic, so you can register for which one you would like. You may bring your own mobile device, otherwise we will use the computer lab in school and we will show you how to download it onto your device. You will need to have a Google account. If you don t have one prior to the class, please indicate that on our registration form and come 15 minutes early so we can set one up for you.
