Father Mouchet Award The Father Mouchet Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the sport of cross country skiing. It can be awarded to volunteers, staff, businesses or individuals who have shown dedication, leadership and commitment to cross country skiing, not only in Whitehorse but in the whole Yukon. The award was established in 1991 in honor of Father Jean M. Mouchet. Father Mouchet inspired the award by making a life-long commitment to cross country skiing in Old Crow, Inuvik, Telegraph Creek, Whitehorse, Dease Lake and other small communities in the Yukon and BC. His dedication motivated many young skiers to make their own life-long commitment. Many of the skiers that he coached in the 70 s became national team skiers and a few went to the Olympics. Many are still skiing and giving back to the community and some have been honored with the Father Mouchet award in past years. Father Mouchet s leadership resulted in the T.E.S.T. program and many school programs run by dedicated teachers and principals. SELECTION PROCESS: Ski club members may submit nominations for the award at any time. In past years the WCCSC Board has delegated the selection to a committee made up of the current Past President and other volunteers who the Past President may recruit. The nomination process is flexible and does not occur every year. Don Sumanik Cup PURPOSE: The Don Sumanik Cup is awarded each year at the Don Sumanik Memorial Race(s) to honour the memory of Don Sumanik and to recognize the fastest male and female skiers. Don Sumanik was one of the founders of the ski club and Cross Country Yukon and was one of the organizers of the 1981 World Cup Final, held in Whitehorse. Don died suddenly in December 1982. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The award criteria have been modified over the years. It was based on fastest combined time for male and female skiers over the classic and free technique races for many years but recently has been based on only one race, usually the classic event. Presently, the award policy reads: awarded each year to the fastest open male and female skier on the first day of racing, skiing a common distance. For example, all males skiing 10 kilometers on the same course, and all females skiing the same 7.5 kilometers on the first day of racing, regardless of age would be eligible for the award. PROCEDURE: Any skier entered in the Open Male or Female category (or skiing the same distance, but in a different category) of the Don Sumanik Races on the first day of competition is eligible for the trophy. The winners of the trophy will be announced as soon as the official results are available. Trophies will be presented at the Award Ceremony for the Event. AWARD: A large trophy for Male and one for Female are kept in the Wax Room and updated with small plaques each year. Keeper trophies were also presented for several years but that was discontinued. Traditionally, the Trophies have been presented by a member of the Sumanik Family. Schiffkorn Trophy Awarded Yukon Championships to the fastest time for male and female 14 years old and younger, skiing a common distance. PURPOSE: This trophy was donated by the Schiffkorn family to complement the Gordon Taylor trophy which was always awarded to older skiers. The Schiffkorns wanted to recognize the achievements of younger skiers. ELIGIBILITY: Skiers must be in the juvenile or younger categories which includes boys and girls who are 14 years old and younger. To be eligible the skiers must compete on a common distance, for example, all juvenile and younger boys who ski in the 7.5K would be eligible.
