December 2017 New York Primary School Well, what a fantastic, successful Autumn term it has been at New York Primary! Staff and pupils have worked hard to ensure progress across the curriculum and we have celebrated a number of whole school successes including Inclusion Quality Mark Flagship status, Primary Science Quality Mark GOLD and PE Gold award. With your support we have raised over 650 this term, for various charities as well as your significant food contribution to The People s Kitchen. The Festive Season is a real favourite at New York but it does not stop teaching and learning from taking place. We have enjoyed welcoming families and friends into school to support our Christmas Fair and Christmas Craft events and I know you will join me in once again congratulating all pupils for their Christmas Productions with both the KS2 performance and the EYFS and KS1 performances outstanding! It was lovely to see so many of you join us for our Christmas Carols on Thursday morning and thanks to all who entered our Diorama competition. The independent judge was so impressed that he decided to reward all entries with a tub of chocolates! The Christmas parties are over and we all look forward to celebrating Christmas with family and friends over the holiday period. It continues to be a joy and privilege to work as Headteacher of New York Primary School and I look forward to a busy and successful 2018. On behalf of staff and governors I would like to thank you for your support this term and wish you all a very Happy Christmas! Mrs Shaw Attendance Our current whole school attendance is 96.1% which is slightly below our target of 96.5% w/c Whole School Winning Class % (of winning 20/11 96.6 LM/BD/JD/JB 100 27/11 95.8 JB 100 4/12 95.9 LM 98.7 11/12 96.1 LM 99.7 www.newyorkprimaryschool.org @newyorkprimary

Family Craft Day Thank you to all of our families who came and joined us for the family craft sessions this year. We have had lots of positive feedback about splitting the sessions into morning and afternoon this is something which will continue next year. EYFS / KS1 Show On Wednesday 13th December EYFS & KS1 put on their A King is Born performance. Year 2 did a fantastic job of learning their lines and projecting their voices across the big hall full of families and friends. All classes worked so hard to produce such a fantastic sound with some of the best singing we have ever heard! We hope you enjoyed it as much as the children did! KS2 Performance On the 12th December, KS2 performed their play to parents in the afternoon and in the evening. Every year group gave 100% when they performed and they got some wonderful reactions from their audience. Thank you to everyone who came and to all of those parents and carers who helped out with costumes

EYFS Pantomime On the 7th December, EYFS were very lucky to watch the story of The Littlest Christmas Elf. We helped her to make an extra present for Santa. We thoroughly enjoyed joining in with lots of singing and actions. Key Stage 1&2 Pantomime. On 6th December KS1 & 2 were treated to A Christmas Carolling Catastrophe pantomime performed by Bigfoot Arts Education. This was an interactive performance and New York pupils were not reluctant to become involved! Carol Singing Choir Last week our choir were invited to sing at Rake Lane Hospital. They sang as beautifully as always and everyone who saw them commented on how well behaved and tuneful they were!

Dioramas Christmas Scene in a Box A huge well done to every family who entered into the Christmas Scene in a box competition. It was very hard for Darren Starling from Vision Education to choose our winners but in the end he chose Cleo (Y4), Henry (Reception) and Lily-Grace (Y2) as worthy top three winners. Because he was so impressed with ALL entries Darren very generously donated a tub of sweets,(sponsored by Vision), to all who took part. We are already looking forward to the Easter Egg competition! Shhhh A Special Visitor! Last week Key Stage One gathered in the hall for a Christmas Story with Miss Hollywood, when all of a sudden, who should appear but Santa Claus! The children were very excited and sang him some beautiful songs from our Christmas Productions and some New York favourites. We were very lucky as Santa had loaded his Christmas trolley full of goodies for everyone!

Christmas Lunch On Thursday 14th December, we were treated to our Christmas Lunch, Jane and her team in the kitchen pulled out all the stops to peel 16kg of sprouts and 40kg of potatoes! Everyone in school was wearing their Christmas jumpers and singing Christmas tunes as we waited for our Christmas Lunch. Christmas Carols Thank you to all our families who joined us for our Christmas Carols on the yard this week. We really enjoyed singing for you and we now feel ready for Christmas! We even invested in some new Christmas lights especially for the occasion! All we need to improve it next year is snow! Christingle Our Year 6 children lead the Annual Christingle in School this week, sharing with us the meaning of Christmas and giving us time to reflect at this busy time of year. Year 2 played a very important role in this celebration, providing a beautiful Tableau Scene.

Family workshops In January, Mrs Bourne and Miss Drake will be leading Science for Families and Engineering for Families sessions where Key Stage 2 families are invited to school on a Friday afternoon. Look out for letters it would be lovely to see more families being involved in our STEM Science for Families Catapult Workshop On 23rd November, families of Key Stage 2 joined NUSTEM and Mrs Bourne for a special, one-off catapult-making workshop. Using their team work skills and engineering skills, families made catapults from items that can be found around the home and then tested them in the school hall. Well done to Leighton Bell s Mum who managed to make her ping-pong ball travel a huge 6.7m! The families showed brilliant resilience and problem solving skills and it was lovely seeing adults and children working together. Keep a look out for any future NUSTEM workshops!

New York Sporting News Swimming Year 4 Year 4 have their exciting swimming lessons in Spring 1 half term! Please ensure that children have their full swimming kit in every Monday beginning on our first day back! Thank you to those who have already returned their forms. Athletics On Wednesday 20th December Mrs Blakey & Miss Hubbard took 8 of our KS2 Athletes to the Parks to take place in an Athletics event. So impressed were the organisers that they awarded our team GOLD for Sports! We wait with excitement to see if any of our athletes have made the NT team!
