OSCAR PETERSON: STUDENT NEWS: 12/17/18 Hello, parents and guardians of Oscar Peterson. This week we will be talking about our robotics club, our holiday concert, our Reach for the Top, our boys and girls basketball team, and our PLAY program. Our holiday concerts on Wednesday were a huge success. Students worked super hard and were happy to see so many smiling faces in the audience. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends and guardians for supporting our concert and students, and we hope you enjoyed performing. Our PLAY program has officially begun! Every Monday at recess and Friday at lunch kids are invited to participate in different games. A group of grade 8 students will be running many different inclusive and exciting games throughout the rest of the year. These games are open to all students! The Lego Robotics competition is coming up in February and the students are rapidly working through the challenges, to try and finish as many as they can. They are showing great dedication coming in mornings and at lunches, to take place in an exciting activity. If your child is in grades 5-8 they may be participating in this competition! The Oscar Peterson Reach for the Top team has been created! Our team consists of grade 7 and 8 students who are eager to begin the season! On Thursday, the team was able to host a practice tournament. Two schools from Markham were invited to join us in a fun and friendly competition! The Grade 5 s have been learning about Government and Citizenship. Students volunteered to run for class Prime Minister and formed groups and began campaigning for their leader. They created posters with their party name, slogans and logos that represented their party as well wrote their own speech which included their platform what the leader would read on Election Day. The platform included changes they would like to see in our classroom and their plan on how they would implement this change. Groups also created merch that they could give out to possible voters and a cheer!! Some examples were mini fans and bookmarks with QR codes on them. When the election took place they invited all the grade 5 s and a grade 4 class to vote. Students voted behind a polling station, on a official ballot. A group of students counted and recounted the ballots. Two groups ended up with a tie, so they decided to combine their platforms and share the role of PM. They have promised the class a more achievable Dojo goal and to start a suggestion cup in the classroom. Grade 5 Elections Winter Concert Night

YORK REGION PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGE Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily to live healthier, happier lives, yet many only spend 14 minutes doing heart pumping activities after school. Most children spend their after school time sitting playing video or computer games, watching television or reading. Tips to get your kids active after school: Get outside with your kids Use active modes of travel such as walking and cycling as much as possible Restrict television viewing and video/computer games during the after school period Encourage your child to participate in sports or intramural activities after school Investigate the availability of programs at your local Parks and Recreation Department Help your child find activities that they enjoy and best suit their abilities This material is provided by York Region Public Health.
