OTHER NEWS MANDARIN CHINESE Becket Keys Church of England School is preparing to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the end of our next Mandarin exams. Year 7 students are making great progress in their Mandarin studies and are looking forward to a special Chinese New Year Day on Tuesday 3 rd February. (I d like to remind Year 7 parents that we do need a voluntary contribution for this via SCOPAY). The day will include various special guests including a Lion Dancing Group from London who will perform at lunchtime. Year 7 students will enjoy four very different sessions on this special day. Students in Year 8 and 9 will be undertaking their Mandarin oral assessments next week for their AQA entrylevel exams. Next week s assessments are critical and will no doubt mean that a lot of revision and hard work is undertaken this weekend. FRIENDS OF BECKET KEYS RAMBLE Mrs Mullan writes: Just before Christmas the FoBK first ever Ramble took place on a lovely Sunday afternoon! There were 26 of us altogether and we are all keen to build up numbers for future rambling adventures! Mr Lastauskas from the site team was really helpful, he ensured everything ran smoothly in terms of use of the facilities and the car park. We set off just after 2:30pm, lots of introductions were made and then we made our way down into the fields across from the school. Students were leading, adults were chatting. Lots of mud around, but everyone was dressed for the occasion! Mrs Savage leaped across a torrential river/small ditch on route trying to throw youngest Savage across, but got caught out and one boot squelched for the rest of the ramble! Superb 'team building' exercise as we worked out how to all cross without getting wet! Some amazing wading and leaps of faith. A wholesome walk was had by all! On arrival back at the school we took off our muddy boots, tied up the doggies and had a cup of tea and cake in the Bistro. It was really lovely to see people meeting and chatting about our amazing school and getting to know one and other. VOLUME V ISSUE III 23 rd January 2015 PAGE 2

OTHER FOOTBALL NEWS Year 8 Boys Football vs Hylands The Year 8 Boys football team were grateful to Hylands for making the trip to Becket Keys on Monday, despite them having problems with a power cut on the coldest day of the year so far and struggling to put together a full team. The game was an extremely satisfying one for Becket Keys, as a full-strength side were able to demonstrate how much they had learned playing a 3-5-2 system. Becket Keys controlled the game from the start, were patient in their build-up play and remained professional throughout. They also managed to score some magnificent goals! The goalscorers were Daniel Ogunleye, Reuben Torgbor, Adoniz Oluwasanya, Nicco Lovelock (2), Haydn Ince, Freddie Mattock and Tom Johnson. The team were delighted to take confidence from this win and will look to use it to their advantage in their remaining fixtures this season. VOLUME V ISSUE III 23 rd January 2015 PAGE 3

NETBALL NEWS YEAR 9 V CHELMER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL The Year 9 netball team played fantastically well against Chelmer Valley High School this week. The girls were ahead from the start and had already gained a 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter! They dominated the game and produced some slick passes and movements to keep Chelmer Valley running around. The final score was 24-2 to Becket Keys well done girls! YEAR 7B V CHELMER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL The Year 7 team played a friendly fixture against Chelmer Valley High School which was a very close game. This was a great experience for both teams and it was a chance for the girls to put into practise the skills that had been developing in training. It was a low scoring tense game and it ended in a 2-2 draw. YEAR 7A V GREENSWARD ACADEMY The Year 7 girls had done well enough to qualify to the next round of the Essex Cup or so we thought until a late result came in from Greensward that put both schools on level points. The only way to settle who would go through to the next round was to play a further game this week so a match was arranged for Thursday. The girls worked very hard, but Greensward dominated the game. Our best performance was during the third quarter, where Emily Barrett defended excellently against their goal shooter, and the girls created more space. Unfortunately, we lost the game and won t be going through to the next round of the cup! However, it was a great experience and the girls know they need to develop their dodges at centre passes and the timing of their movements. VOLUME V ISSUE III 23 rd January 2015 PAGE 4
