Nakusp Secondary School Nakusp Secondary School 11/30/2016 Edition 3 Principal s Message Despite the fact that the last of the leaves are falling and the days continue to get a little colder, it is hard to believe we have already finished Term 1. This month we held our Remembrance Day assembly. Once again the members of our local Legion were gracious in attending and participating in this ceremony and helped share the message of remembrance. With so much political and ideological turmoil currently being experienced in many areas around the world, these moments of reflection help us all truly appreciate what we have in Canada, and the sacrifice others have made for us. Great thanks to Miss Wiseman and the many students who took on leadership roles in support of this event. For all the volunteer coaches, and those who run extracurricular clubs and activities for our students, I want to send out a huge thank you. As our fall sports are coming to an end, and our winter sports are getting underway, we feel so fortunate to have so many staff and community members who are willing to work with our students to provide outstanding opportunities. Without all of you, the students at NSS would not have these experiences, and our school culture would not be what it is today. As you can see from this packed newsletter, we have many activities upcoming in December as well. Report cards for Term 1 were handed out on Monday, November 21 st to students. If your child s report card did not come home for any reason, please contact the school and we will ensure that you receive another copy. One of the changes you will note on report cards is that grade eight and nine students no longer have a percentage attached to their grade. You will only see a letter grade and a comment. Report grades should never be a surprise to students! They should always be talking to their teachers and asking for feedback on their learning. Secondary students should have worked out their own way to keep on top of assignments: using an agenda, using a laptop with a calendar or a calendar on a mobile device. While learning centre courses are self-directed for students in Grades 10-12 they should be either half way for semester courses or almost a quarter of the way through full year courses at this stage. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child s report, please feel free to contact the school. The next PAC meeting is on Monday, the 28 th of November starting at 5:15PM in the NSS library. The PAC is always looking for new parents to come out and join. You don t have to attend every meeting and it is a great opportunity to become more involved in your child s education.
