BIBLE 5 th Grade Bible Christ and My Choices, Purposeful Design (ACSI) This course is designed to make God s Word more meaningful to students on a personal level. The course contains an overview of the Old Testament, a study of various Bible characters, and examples of challenges made to students to make wise choices. 6 th Grade Bible Christ and My Life, Purposeful Design (ACSI) This is a New Testament overview focusing on familiar passages with strong principles for life application. Specific topics include: Redemption; Relationships; Feelings; Thoughts; Choices; Growing in Faith; Lordship of Christ; and Final Events. 7 th Grade Bible NIV Study Bible This course is one part of a two part course, taught over two years beginning in Seventh Grade and finishing in Eighth Grade. Students encounter the One True Living God through reading the entire New Testament, with emphasis on line upon line, precept upon precept teaching, over the two courses. Students are challenged to make daily connections and application of the New Testament teachings to their personal lives. As students engage the Holy Scriptures, they will discover Old Testament connections through New Testament eyes. Along with reading, discussing, and answering questions, students participate in research utilizing common Bible study aids, writing reflections, creating projects to display their understanding, memorizing portions of Scripture, and praying. Students participate in a weekly chapel experience that often can be tied into what they are experiencing through their weekly New Testament interactions. 8 th Grade Bible NIV Study Bible -- Bible 8 is one part of a two part course, taught over two years beginning in Seventh Grade and finishing in Eighth Grade. LANGUAGE ARTS 5th Grade English English 5, BJU Press Students will learn grammar and develop writing skills. Students will also be given instructions in study skills, research skills, listening skills, and speaking skills. MATH 5th Grade Math Math 5, BJU Press This course combines hands-on activities, daily mathematics challenge problems, and traditional math to teach math concepts with multiplication/division, fractions, geometry, decimals, metric measurement, and statistics. 6th Grade Math Math 6, BJU Press This course combines hands-on activities, daily mathematics challenge problems, and traditional math to teach math concepts with addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions, geometry, decimals, ratios, statistics, time and money and pre-algebra. 7th Grade Math Fundamentals of Math, BJU Press -- Students will refine their problem solving skills using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. They will interpret and present data in tables, equations, and various types of graphs. They will find measurements of geometrical figures. They will develop their skills in solving problems algebraically. They will work with ratios, proportions and percents. The will also learn to work with positive and negative integers as well as the rudiments of the coordinate system and plotting points. Finally, they will analyze the outcomes of probability and chance. Pre Algebra Pre Algebra, BJU Press This course deals with the addition, subtraction, multiplication and divisions of decimals, integers, and rational numbers in the context of variable equations. It also includes a survey of number theory, ratio, proportions, percents, and probability. In addition, Geometric concepts such as area, volume, special triangles, and graphing are covered. SCIENCE 5 th Grade Science Science 5, BJU Press -- Science 5 is a general Middle School Science course. All aspects of this class are taught from a Christian Worldview of the study of science, with emphasis on God as Creator and sustainer of our world and everything in it. Through study of this course, students will explore and uncover how the world around us in which we live declares the amazing creativity of the loving Creator God. The BJU Science 5 curriculum meets the Science requirements of the current Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (MGLCE) for fifth grade. 6th Grade Science Science 6, BJU Press Science 6 is a general middle school science course. All aspects of this class are taught from a Christian Worldview emphasizing the Lord God as Creator. Students will explore and discover how the natural world around us declares God s glory. Topics include, but are not limited to, an over-arching study of the Creation account as found in Genesis; Cells and Classification; Atoms and Molecules; Electricity and Magnetism; Motion and Machines; the Nervous System and the Immune System. All Creation discussion center around the Young Earth Interpretation; Macroevolution is discussed and studied as a theory that can be disproven. Students are expected to participate in a guided Science Fair Project. 7th Grade Science Life Science, BJU Press Life Science is a middle school survey course touching major areas of life science. All aspects of this class are taught from a Christian Worldview emphasizing the Lord God as Creator. Students will explore and discover how the natural world around us declares God s glory. Topics include, but are not limited to, classifying living things, cell structure, activities of cells, cell division, organisms, genetics, aspects of the plant kingdom, concepts in the animal kingdom, and the human body. All Creation discussion center around the Young Earth Interpretation; Macroevolution is discussed and studied as a theory that can be disproven. Students are expected to participate in a guided Science Fair Project. 8th Grade Science Space and Earth Science, BJU Press This course is a study of the heavens and the earth from a Christian worldview, proclaiming God s handiwork through the study of the physical universe. Affirming the young earth creationist view of the Earth s history and disproving the evolutionary views pervading the scientific community and our culture, the text is a study of scientific philosophies and models, outer space, meteorology, geology, and oceanography. HISTORY 5th Grade History Heritage Studies 5, BJU Press Students will learn about the roots of contemporary United States struggles and the blossoming of American enterprise from the early 1900 s to the year 2000. 6th Grade History Heritage Studies 6, BJU Press Touring the lands, peoples, and cultures of ancient civilizations, students will learn about the history of Egypt, Israel, China, Greece, Africa, the Mayas, the Roman world and the Middle Ages. 7th Grade History Students will learn and be able to explain the basic history of the United States starting with the Indians and their culture, followed by a study of colonization, Independence, the Constitution, and the Civil War. Students will be introduced to World War I and World War II. Students will be able to explain various caused for developments in the United States. 8th Grade Geography Students will learn and be able to explain major geographical terms and concepts, followed by a survey of the continents. During the survey students will be looking at major geographical features, political, boundaries and the people and culture of the various regions and nations. OTHER COURSES AND OFFERINGS Character Building Teacher created - In these class sessions, the students learn and improve interpersonal skills and middle school team-building through group discussions and cross-grade group curriculum projects that involve older students working with younger students. Each group is responsible for allocating team jobs, as well as meeting daily and weekly project goals. The middle school students will also learn important time management and study skills that will be incorporated throughout the Middle School curriculum, including: tracking of weekly assignments and scheduling out study schedules for upcoming exams. Computer - Key Boarding Teacher created In this course, students will learn the touch-key method of typing. They will type from source copy, without looking at their hands on the keyboard. Attention will be given to developing the proper techniques for effective typing as well as gaining accuracy and speed. Using drills, lessons, games, and customizable typing tests, this course will offer a variety of ways to improve typing speed and accuracy while giving each student immediate feedback on their progress. Spanish Teacher created -- The middle school Spanish class is an intermediate Spanish class that bridges the gap between the elementary and high school years. The middle school class goes further in depth with larger, more specific vocabulary lists and an introduction to grammar. Students gain a wider cultural awareness and learn to communicate by speaking, listening, writing, and reading basic concepts in Spanish PHYSICAL EDUCATION 5 th /6th Grade Physical Education Teacher created -- Students will demonstrate competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. The students will be able to apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of those motor skills. The students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle by achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Each student will learn to understand and respect the differences among people in the physical activity setting. Upon completing the physical education curriculum, the students will understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. 7 th and 8 th Grade Physical Education Teacher created Students will learn the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. They demonstrate an understanding of healthy eating, the food pyramid, and use resources available to them to determine their own health level with food. Students also demonstrate a competency in some physical skills and a proficiency in other physical skills as they learn to apply these motor skills in a realistic manner. Students demonstrate an understanding of their own physical wellness and the ability to set goals to improve their own health and wellness.
