St. Francis School Newsletter C 18 th May 2018 Value of the month Peace Dear Parents and Carers, Last year, one of our Headgirls, Maddalena, had promised our pupils that she would work to establish links between our school and a school in a less fortunate part of the world. For months she researched schools and finally, just before she left us and with the help of Mike and Eliz Wood, she was able to make her dream a reality. The school is in Madaba, Jordan, very close to the Gaza Strip. Like us, it is a Catholic school, and many of the pupils who attend it are refugees from Syria. Our Year 4 pupils wrote to their Year 4 pupils just before Christmas, and last week they were delighted to receive replies to their letters! Our next step in communicating with them will include the use of technology. We hope that this link strengthens over the next few months as it is so important for all of us to be aware of and care for others whose lives are so different from ours. In Pope Francis words, Let them see the world is empathetic and welcoming. Our thanks this week go to the parishioners of All Saints, Oxted and St Ambrose, Warlingham for their generous donations towards our Remembrance Garden. We have great plans for our garden, and will be working on it this Summer. A special thank you to Fran Wall who organised it all. The YR trip to Ladyland Farm was very successful on Tuesday, as was the Yr4 trip to the Observatory in Herstmonceux. The pupils had great fun and learned many interesting facts. They were all well-behaved, which is very pleasing. Yesterday was Outdoor Learning Day what a fantastic day for everyone, especially as the sun was beaming down on all of us! Every class went outside at various times of the day to do their learning. Our Yr6 and Yr2 pupils have been sitting their SATs this past week. Everything has gone well and our pupils appear pleased with the assessments. This morning, the Yr6s celebrated in style with their End of SATs Party. The papers have been sent off for marking and we now await the results with great anticipation. The Yr2 pupils still have two more assessments next week. We are all looking forward to the Royal Wedding this week-end, and our pupils have been learning all about Prince Harry and his role in the Royal Family. Today, dressed in red, blue and white and surrounded by bunting and balloons, we once again enjoyed the outdoors by having a picnic lunch outside. On Tuesday 22 nd May 2018, our Yr6 pupils will enjoy a fun day at St Joseph s in Redhill along with all the other Yr6 pupils in our Deanery. The activities they will be doing will be in groups with other children going to the same secondary school as them, enabling them to make new friends before starting in September. Our annual Talent Show will be held next Friday, 25 th May 2018, and we are all looking forward to being greatly entertained by our very many incredibly talented pupils! The lovely weather is set to continue, so I wish you a very happy and pleasant week-end. If you are planning to watch the Royal Wedding, I hope you thoroughly enjoy it! Mrs N. Fawcett

Reminder to Parents Please remember that children are NOT to play with/ on any equipment after school, including the equipment in Cherry Class s garden. Thank you. School Association St Francis Family BBQ - The weather is looking good for next Friday (fingers crossed!). Please see your class reps for tickets as last day to buy them is the 23/05/18. If you can help out please speak to Lucy Kolkman. Thanks in advance to everyone who has already agreed to help on the night. Summer Fun Day 6th July 3:30-5:30pm. Thank you to all the class reps for taking on the stalls that they have been allocated. If you don't know what stall your class has for this year please see your class rep. After some hard work behind the scenes we have been donated some amazing raffle prizes this year. Local businesses have been very generous. If you know of anyone that would be willing to donate a raffle prize to the school please let us know. It would be great to get some local restaurant vouchers if anyone knows anyone they can ask. Jolly Jars - due to the success of the Jolly Jars at the Christmas Fair we have decided to have them again for the Summer. Please can you get your children started with making some jolly jars, filling them with sweets, party bag fillers, hair bits etc. There will be a brilliant prize for the class that sends in the most. We will set a date closer to the time for these to be brought into school. Lucky Ticket stall - Maple Class (Year 5) are running this stall. They will be receiving a number of the Raffle Prizes for their stall however they also rely on donations of fancy goods/unwanted gifts (they will be making up small hampers of gifts). Please help them if you have anything you can donate to them, Leila Merrett or Elena Tully are the class reps. First Aiders - We will need to have some designated First Aider's on site between 3.30-5.30pm. Please let us know if you can help. There will be a MUFTI DAY - Thursday 5th July. Children can wear their own clothes in exchange for bringing in a bottle on that day for the Tombola. Ice Creams - these will be on sale after school on a Friday weather permitting. Save the date St Francis Family BBQ - 25/05/18 - See poster for details Summer Fayre - 06/07/18 Next PTA meeting - 13/06/18 at 7:30pm in the school hall
