International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Deborah Few, IB Coordinator dfew@bcbe.org

IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Who Should Apply to IB? IB is for motivated students IB Learner Profile Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open- minded Caring Risk- takers Balanced Reflective

How does the IB Program pay off? Increases University Acceptances Opportunities at Scholarships and College Credit IB Students are well prepared for University work IB Students are Life Long learners

WHY IB? What is of paramount importance in the pre- university stage is not what is learned but learning how to learn... What matters is not the absorption and regurgitation either of fact or pre- digested interpretations of facts, but the development of powers of the mind or ways of thinking which can be applied to new situations and new presentations of facts as they arise. Peterson, A. 1972. The International Baccalaureate: An experiment in International Education. London. George Harrap.

University Acceptance Rates Did you know? Most Universities will only give credit for English/ History subjects. Students that major in STEM disciplines will retake beginning 100/200 level classes. IB Student also take AP Exams in order to earn College Credits. Let s look at three Universities in the State of Alabama University of South Alabama http://www.southalabama.edu/departments/admissions/collegecredit.html Auburn University http://www.auburn.edu/administration/registrar/student.html#apinfo University of Alabama https://catalog.ua.edu/archive/2014-15/introduction/academicpolicies/creditbyexamination/

The Reality ACT/ SAT Score Most students can realistically improve their scores on average 3-4 points. G.P.A IB Classes 1.0 AP Classes.5 AP Exam.5 Level of Classes The majority of schools will give credit for English and History Subject Exams- very rarely for STEM If you focus of study is within the STEM Disciplines you will have to take their basic Science and Math courses Credit = Cash Colleges are businesses.

Why the Growing Recognition for IB? Recent research shows that IB students succeed in higher education: 81% of IB diploma candidates with a score of 28 or above graduate from college in 4 years. 57% of non- IB students graduate from college in 6 years. Sources: National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) and US Dept. of Ed., Spring 2 007 Studies suggests that IB students are not only going to better colleges in greater numbers but are performing better once there. A 2011 study of almost 25,000 IB Diploma and certificate students found IB students were more likely than the national average to attend college full- time, with nearly 70% attending selective or more selective colleges.
