A quality education in a caring environment 46 Ogden Road, Oakville, NSW 2765 oakville-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au www.oakvilleps.nsw.edu.au Ph: 4572 3142 Fax: 4572 3822 Dear Parents / Carers Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Thank You I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Oakville Public School for their wonderful work during the year. As this will be the last newsletter for 2018, the staff of Oakville Public School would like to wish all families a safe and restful festive season. We look forward to another fantastic year in 2019. This week, we say goodbye to many of our Year 6 parents whose youngest child is leaving primary school. We hope they take away many fond memories of their time at Oakville Public School, and we wish them and their children all the very best for the future. These families have supported the school over many years and we thank them for their assistance. We will miss you! To all of the Year 6 students, we say goodbye and good luck in high school. To the families and students who are moving to new areas for next year, we also say goodbye and good luck. Thank you for all of your support during your years at Oakville Public School. Thank you to the Oakville Public School P&C for their tireless efforts organising the many functions and fundraising events during the year. We greatly appreciate that you give up your personal time to assist the school. We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated teaching staff who work tirelessly to deliver a quality, well-rounded education for all of our students. They spend many hours of their own time, ensuring that your child has the opportunity to participate in many extra-curricular activities, as well as delivering excellent educational programs. Our office staff do a tremendous job running our school office. We are extremely lucky to have Mrs Endicott, Mrs Griffin, Mrs Pollock, Mrs Tinker and Mrs Muscat at Oakville Public School. They do so many extra things, above and beyond their role, to ensure that parents always receive a warm welcome to our office, as well as a high standard of service. Thank you to Mr Grimaldi for the fantastic job he does around our school grounds, ensuring that our school always looks wonderful. He completes many jobs above and beyond his role. I also thank all of our support staff for the extra support they provide to the staff and students. Their contribution greatly enhances the programs that operate within Oakville Public School. To the families who are returning to Oakville Public School in 2019, we look forward to working with you next year and we also thank you for your wonderful contribution to our school during 2018. The amount of parents willing to volunteer their time to assist the school is certainly appreciated. School will resume on Wednesday 30 January for students in Years 1-6. 2019 Kindergarten students will attend Best Start interviews on Wednesday 30 January Friday 1 February and then commence big school on Monday 4 February. 2019 Classes During the last few staff meetings, teachers have been completing the lengthy job of looking at classes and student placements for 2019. Many aspects of a student s placement are taken into consideration, to carefully place every child. The teachers possess information on each student s academic ability, reading levels, mathematics ability, NAPLAN results and emotional and social needs. Student friendship groups are taken into consideration as well. Possible friendship groups are one consideration in the placement, however, it is viewed in terms of learning buddies not necessarily social buddies. While having a special friend is important, I remind everyone that this is a class group for learning. As you can see, this is a very thorough process that involves considerable time, sensitivity and care. This is, however, not a process about one child. Every child is important. All children are given consideration. Every child is placed in reference to a bigger plan of how students, classes and teachers come together for optimal learning. I thank all of our teachers, support staff, students and families for their input and support of this critical process. A note outlining class structures will be sent home at the beginning of 2019. Wednesday 30 January 2019 For the first day back next year, the following procedures will be followed. All students will go to their 2018 classroom, when the 9.15am bell rings. 2018 Kindergarten students will be collected from their 2018 classroom and taken to the Year 5/6 classrooms. The students will spend part of the morning session in this classroom. New students starting at Oakville Public School will need to go to the office to be taken to a classroom. When all rolls have been completed, the students will be taken to the hall to be placed into their classes for 2019. We would appreciate parents departing the school in the usual manner. This can often be a nervous time for students and parents. Past experience indicates that if parents are present, the anxiety that students may be experiencing is often heightened. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Students will not be placed into their 2019 classes until all parents have left the school grounds. All students will be able to be picked up at 3.15pm from the school COLA area. Presentation Assembly Thank you to all of the parents and community members for attending our annual presentation assembly. The assembly was very successful and it was great to celebrate so many wonderful student achievements, as well as the many fantastic events of 2018. Well done to the students for their tremendous efforts during 2018. Thank you to Ms Howes and the administration staff for doing a wonderful job organising the assembly. She has been an extremely valuable member of the Oakville Public School teaching staff during 2018. Parent Information Evening On Thursday 21 February 2019, a Parent Information Evening will be held at Oakville Public School. During the evening, important information will be discussed regarding procedures and general class information for the 2019 school year. The information sessions will be followed by a Welcome Barbecue which will be organised by the Oakville Public School P&C. Please keep this date free in 2019. More detailed information regarding the evening will be sent home early term 1. Sean Montgomery Principal Sports House Captains 2019 Early next year Oakville Public School will hold their annual house meetings to determine who will be sports house captains in 2019. There will be a change to the process in which students are chosen, with the number of captains being reduced to 16. This means there will be two captains and two vice captains representing each of our four houses. Preference will be given to Stage 3 students with Stage 2 students being given the opportunity if there is a lack of available Stage 3 students. We look forward to another year of success in sport in 2019. Congratulations, Charlotte Congratulations to Charlotte who was successful in gaining selection in the Sydney West Cricket Team. Charlotte represented Oakville Public School and Ridges PSSA at a carnival in Toronto, Newcastle. Well done, Charlotte on a fantastic achievement! Jake Schubert Sports Coordinator Year 6 Farewell Arch On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 2.45pm, we will organise a farewell arch for Year 6 2018. The arch will involve all students from Kindergarten to Year 5 and will conclude at approximately 3.15pm, near the hall COLA.
