AERO DESIGN CHELLANGE 2017 WORKSHOP REPORT Program Name : Aero Design Challenge Workshop-4 Date : 4 th & 5 th March 2017 Venue : JEPPIAAR SRR Engineering College, OMR, Chennai Number of Participants : 84 Students (25 Teams) We are glad to inform you that SAEINDIA Southern Section conducted Aero Design Challenge workshop-4 at JEPPIAAR SRR Engineering College, OMR, and Chennai on 4 th & 5 th March 2017. Student Members of SAEINDIA from various engineering Institutions across India participated in the workshop. In the inauguration, Dr. S. Senthilkumar, Champion-Aero Design Challenge (ADC) & Professor, Veltech University, Chennai welcomed the dignitaries and participants for the Aero Design Challenge Workshop-4 and gave a brief outline about the ADC 2017 workshop and its achievements.

Mr. S. Shanmugam, Vice Chairman - SAEINDIA Southern Section, & Director - Design Desk (India) Private Limited, graced the occasion and delivered a talk about the importance of UAV aero designing challenge and their roles on societal applications. He also talked about the evolution of SAE and SAEINDIA and highlighted the impact and outcome of SAEINDIA aero design challenge. He motivated the students to take part in the continuous learning process through various SAE student activities. Then he thanked JEPPIAAR SRR Engineering College for hosting the Aero Design Challenge workshop-4 in their college and presented the memento to the hosting institution. On behalf of the hosting institute, Dr. T. Sasikala Principal, Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College, Chennai welcomed the dignitaries and participants for the Aero Design Challenge Workshop-4 in the presence of Prof. Dr. Edison Chandra Seelan, Head-R&D, Mechanical Stream and Dr. Shankar, Head-R&D-Electrical and Electronics Stream of Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College.

All the dignitaries and the participants of the Aero Design Challenge workshop stood up for the national anthem before starting the technical sessions. In the first technical session, the applications of UAVs were explained by Mr. Vasantharaj, Senior Scientist, Centre for Aerospace Research (CASR), MIT Chennai with glimpse of videos taken with the help of UAVs developed by CASR, MIT, Chennai. The participants were inspired after seeing the video taken with the help of MIT-UAV during the flood situation in Chennai and how their UAVs saved many lives during that situation. Then, they explained how the UAVs developed by MIT team are helpful in many real time practical situations for the Tamilnadu police department and NDRF, India. They also emphasised the research opportunities in the field of UAV and its future challenges for constructive applications After that, Dr. S. Senthilkumar, Champion-Aero Design Challenge (ADC) & Professor, Veltech University lectured the basics of an aircraft and UAV including aerodynamics forces, main components, control surfaces and their functionality, airfoil and wing design procedures, overview of design tools and stability and performance parameters. Mr. Velan, Research associate, CASR, MIT explained about propulsion systems and its selection process through some basic calculations.

After the basics, the student were explained about the Engineering Design and Fabrication Process of UAV by Dr. R. Krishna Kumar, Member-ADC & HOD-EEE, Vels University and along with 9 Research associates of CASR, MIT in the post lunch session on 4th and pre lunch session on 5 th March 2017. The students were also taught about propulsion system, avionics systems and control surfaces of UAV. All the participants learned the engineering concepts of aero design of UAV.

. The students received their kits for making UAV and started their work on design and fabrication of aero model as per the instruction given by the trainers from the CASR, MIT, and Chennai. All the UAV models designed and fabricated by the teams have been gone through pre-check carried out by the trainers and flyers before the flight test in order to have proper stability requirements.

On 5 th March 2017, all the teams have completed fabrication of their own UAV models, and then performed the flight test of their models successfully with the help of trainers and flyers at JEPPIAAR SRR Engineering College ground The flyers tested the flight model of all the teams. The students were happy as they could understand the fundamentals and design process of the UAV and all their models were flying successfully. They could also be able to understand and appreciate the importance of accuracy and role of each control surface for a successful flight of their models

On 5th March 2017, during the valedictory function, Dr. S. Senthilkumar, Professor, Veltech University, introduced Shri. R. Venugopal, DRDO Fellow & distinguished scientist, CVRDE, Chennai to the particpants. Shri. R. Venugopal motivated the students by sharing his experiences in DRDO and emphasised the importance of hands-on experiences for understanding functionalities of a system. He also highlighted that students should have a habit of life-long learning through professional society like SAE. Prof. Dr. Edison Chandra Seelan, and Prof. Dr. Shankar, Heads-R&D, Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College, presented a bouquet to Shri. R. Venugopal, DRDO and proposed a vote of thanks.
