Newsletter no 3 4 th October 2013 Dear Parents The children have settled down in their new classes with their new teachers and have been working hard. Damien and Seren in Y1 showed me their writing about their senses and JJ in YR was very proud of his writing about The Three Bears. Jack T has shown a really good attitude to learning in Y6 and has done some great mathematics work about rounding to the nearest 10 or 100. The children continue to be helpful and Caitlin and Alys were fabulous yesterday, acting as runners for me during a wet lunchtime. Alfie in YR enjoyed his first school lunch which was pizza and amused the staff when he went to ask Mrs Stonier if there were any dips to go with it! Head Boy/Head Girl and House Captains Staff discussed nominations for Head Boy and Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl and agreed the following: Head Boy Head Girl Deputy Head Boy Deputy Head Girl Oliver B Catherine T Simon M Katie A Congratulations to these pupils. We are confident that they will be excellent representatives of our school. Baby Atkins Congratulations to Mrs Atkins, her husband James and Olivia, on the safe arrival of Hannah Elizabeth Atkins born on 30 th September weighing 8lb 6oz. Everyone is doing well. Parent Governors I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Clare Welland (Dominic Class 8 and Katherine Class 1) and Mrs Juliette Green (Jacob Class 6) have volunteered to join the Governing Body. Thank you! YR Phonics meeting Many thanks to Mrs O Sullivan for leading the meeting about phonics on Tuesday. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint is on the school website and information packs will be sent out next week. KS1 Reading Meeting I apologise for the confusion over the date of this meeting. It will take place on Tuesday, 15 th October at 9am not Tuesday 8 th. It will be the same content as last year so if you attended when your child was in Y1 there is no need to come along again (unless you would like to!). WOW Congratulations to all of the children who have been awarded a Walk Once a Week badge this month. It is lovely to see them wearing their dinosaur badges with such pride. The increased numbers of children walking, scooting or parking and striding is having a positive impact on the parking and traffic around our school site. Thank you. Next month s badge features cave men and women. School uniform I am aware that a number of children have lost jumpers and cardigans this term. Please would you check that your child has got their own uniform and if not, please return it to the class teacher. It is essential that all school uniform is named with iron-on labels or permanent marker pen so that it can be returned to the right child. Please can I respectfully remind you that the girls should wear plain white socks or grey/green/black tights. Thank you for your cooperation. Please note that there is no facility with ordering school uniform for return or exchange if you have ordered the wrong size. Please consult the guide provided by our suppliers or ask the school office before ordering if you are unsure about sizes. We intend to keep one item of each size in stock for children to try for size. Music Lessons in School Percussion and Brass Mr Clausen has 1 space for any new percussion (drums) pupil, Year 4 and above (Year 4 ideally) and also 3 new brass players - Year 4 and above but Year 5 ideally because of teeth and general physical growth! You do not need to purchase a brass instrument before trying this out. Hampshire Music Service offers a hire scheme for a very reasonable 20 a term. Information on the hire scheme is available on: http://www3.hants.gov.uk/education/hms/hms-student-instrument-hire.htm Please make sure you have a confirmed space for lessons at school before you arrange to hire an instrument as Mr Clausen will need to advise you which type is best suited to your child. If you are interested and would like to talk to Mr Clausen - he will be available on Monday 14 October between 2.30 and 3 pm. You are welcome to pop in to chat about it and to ask any questions.
Summer Reading Challenge The Discovery Centre have informed us that 70 children from our school completed the Summer Reading Challenge 2013! Our scores from previous years are: 2012 = 44, 2011 = 19. 'Creepy House' was a great success and our pupils contributed to Winchester Discovery Centre coming 1st out of all Hampshire Libraries ~ with 1004 children completing the challenge! They are very happy! I'm sure you will agree that this is a huge achievement for the children and will join us in congratulating them! Please continue to encourage your children to read and to visit the Discovery Centre. Leaflets have been sent out in the registers about the 'Wessex Children's Book Festival' which happens every October Half Term ~ again this year there is a huge range of fantastic authors coming to visit the Discovery Centre. See the information at www.wessexbookfest.co.uk. Sport in the Park Please see the attached details for free activities organised by Winchester City Council. Industrial Action by NUT and NASUWT As you may be aware, the NUT and NASUWT are intending to take joint industrial action on Thursday, 17 th October. I have asked the staff to let me know as soon as possible if they intend to take part in the action so that I can communicate any impact at Kings Worthy Primary School to you at the earliest opportunity. I look forward to seeing you next week at Parents evenings; have a lovely weekend with your children. Yours sincerely Mrs Julie Mullane Headteacher
