Frostburg State University Professional Achievements 2001 This booklet highlights the many professional achievements of Frostburg State University s diverse and talented faculty during the past year. As you will see in the following pages, Frostburg s faculty members contribute to their fields by producing original research, creative works and performances, and scholarship in teaching and learning. Our faculty members also engage in widespread service to their fields and in the community. The faculty s professional activities enhance their performance in the classroom and bolster the University s role in supporting regional cultural and economic development activities. Please join me in celebrating the faculty s professional achievements and thanking them for their efforts. Stephen J. Simpson Interim Provost The professional achievements listed are those reported by faculty and staff in response to surveys distributed during the spring of 2001 or in the StateLines campus publication during the 2000-2001 academic year. They encompass achievements during the period from June 1 of 2000 to June 1 of 2001. There may have been notable achievements that were unreported and thus unlisted. This list has been compiled and published by the Division of University Advancement.
From the Deans The quality of a university is judged by the quality of its faculty. The faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are not only dedicated to teaching and mentoring, they are committed to the advancement of knowledge and service in their areas of expertise. Their accomplishments in these areas provide them with unique perspectives on their disciplines that they can utilize to enrich the classroom experiences for their students. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is committed to promoting and supporting the professional accomplishments of its faculty members. The College has initiated a program by which faculty can seek reassigned time from their teaching responsibilities in order to engage in professional development activities. The College has also set a high priority on funding faculty travel to professional conferences in order that faculty might share the results of their scholarship with their colleagues throughout the world and keep current with the scholarship of others. In order to encourage the faculty to extend their knowledge to the interconnections between disciplines, the College has initiated a program in which two faculty members can attend one of each other s courses for a semester in order to develop interdisciplinary knowledge. The College takes prides in the accomplishments of the faculty in the areas of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and the Visual and Performing Arts. The broad range of faculty activities and the outstanding quality of these activities is an indication of the distinctiveness of the faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and their willingness and desire to provide the finest educational opportunities for our students. Fred Yaffe Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences College of Business faculty demand much from their students, but they also demand much from themselves. This publication provides evidence of some of the intellectual and service contributions of our faculty during the past year. I am very proud of the accomplishments of our faculty outside the classroom, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to acknowledge their efforts. The level of intellectual activity and support for those activities has been increasing within the College of Business, and we expect this trend to continue. Faculty development is a high priority because we recognize that these efforts ultimately benefit our students. We want our students to be life-long learners and good citizens, and our faculty serve as excellent role models. Their contributions to education, exercise and sports science, and recreation have added substantially to the development of the region, the state, and the nation. Higher Education Award for Leadership in National Service The Corporation for National Service presented Frostburg State University with the Higher Education Award for Leadership in National Service, the first time the honor has been bestowed. Chosen from among 30 higher education applicants, FSU s programs were judged to have high quality or were unique in a variety of criteria for the award, including: FSU used national service in significant way to support the institution s mission to be of service to the country and to the community in which it resides. The University has adopted or expanded service learning as part of the mission or fundamental goals of the institution. It has engaged students on a substantial scale in volunteer service, including tutoring in the America Reads Challenge. It has promoted or organized service activities for national days of service, particularly Martin Luther King Jr. Day and National Youth Service Day. The Center for Service, Leadership and AmeriCorps is the umbrella for a consortium of national and student service and leadership programs. These include: The Allen HallSTARS! Education Award Only AmeriCorps Program. There are 90 HallSTARS! members, all of whom are FSU freshmen and part-time AmeriCorps members living in Allen Hall. The Western Maryland READS Alliance AmeriCorps *VISTA Program. There are seven *VISTA volunteers who coordinate programs around the region. The A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps Program, which includes 40 community members from Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties providing service at 17 sites. The Institute for Service Learning, a Learn and Serve Program. The VOICE (Volunteer Opportunities in the Community Environment) Volunteer Clearinghouse and student service and leadership programming. The Center for Service and Leadership. Participants in these programs, along with FSU students, have provided over 111,150 hours of service engaging 3,000 community volunteers in 1999-2000 alone. Service was provided in the areas of education, the environment, unmet human needs and public safety. 3
Faculty Achievement Awards, 2001 Dr. Cindy Herzog, Psychology Teaching Dr. Herzog s enthusiasm for teaching has become legendary for the many students that she has coached in the discipline of psychology over the past 15 years. Her colleagues marvel at the consistently mind-boggling high student ratings that she has received in all her classes, even during her tenure as department chair. Dr. Herzog has also reached out to other disciplines in her teaching. The unusual perspective that she brought to a learning community course taught with a colleague in accounting is indicative of her ecumenical teaching skills. Her authentic empathy for all students and her ability to nurture their eagerness to become young scholars sets a high standard for teaching excellence. Dr. Shawn P. Johansen, History Teaching Dr. Johansen was nominated by his department for his distinctive combination of traditional and innovative teaching methods that have won high praise from his students and some envy from his older colleagues. He has a unique ability to connect with all students while insisting on rigorous academic standards. His skill in invoking student involvement in the classroom makes his classes an enjoyable learning experience for the various levels and variety of courses that he has taught at FSU since 1995. Dr. Johansen has also become a highly respected participant in faculty governance and has recently published a book on fatherhood in 19th-century America. 4
Faculty Achievement Awards, 2001 Kathleen H. Powell, Social Work University/Community Service Since joining the FSU faculty in 1990, Professor Powell has labored diligently and heroically to gain accreditation for the undergraduate social work program. She wrote most of the texts for three self-study documents, conducted alumni surveys, developed multiple editions of supporting documents and fieldwork programs and manuals, and worked with the State Attorney General s Office to produce a certified affiliation agreement for internship sites. This monumental accreditation effort, begun two years before Professor Powell arrived, required 10 more years of her determined leadership to fully materialize. For six of those 10 years, she also served as chair of a newly developed social work department. For the past several years, Professor Powell has also conscientiously served in a variety of other social outreach programs in Western Maryland, all aimed at elevating social justice. Dr. James C. Saku, Geography Academic Accomplishment Sustained commitment to published scholarship on the Canadian North is the quality that earned Dr. Saku the Academic Accomplishment Award. This year s academic recipient has conscientiously and successfully redressed the scholarly imbalance marked by lack of knowledge about this important region of the world. His numerous journal publications and monographs on the relationship between geography, demography, and economic development in the Mackenzie Basin in particular has earned Dr. Saku wide recognition among scholars in several disciplines. His insights into the role of aborigines in Canada s development are also noteworthy. His many conference presentations at Canadian Studies meetings add another important dimension to his work. In the classroom he is very warmly regarded by his students. 5
