Bellringer: Jan. 27 You don t need to write the questions - Why is it important to show how ALL ideas in an essay relate to each other? You are SUBMITTING THIS BELLRINGER in FIVE MINUTES. Today s agenda: 1. Revise the 10 th grade PERFORMANCE TASK. Pay attention to the scoring guide. 2. We will NOT be in a GREEN zone today. PUT YOUR PHONES AWAY. 3. We might begin the 10 th grade unit 2 common assessment depending on how long we work on revising the performance task.

What is a Performance TASK? Performance tasks build on earlier content knowledge, process skills, and work habits and are strategically placed in the lesson or unit to enhance learning as the student pulls it all together. from ASCD Reflect a real-world task and/or scenario-based problem SmarterBalanced Require student-initiated planning, management of information and ideas, interaction with other materials SmarterBalanced Measure capacities such as depth of understanding, research skills, complex analysis, and identification/providing of relevant evidence - SmarterBalanced

During the state test s performance task, you will be given the instructions to revise and to edit your response. How is revision different from editing? Some important things to know If you copy text, meaning just rewrite what the source says with no discussion of the information or citation of information, you will not receive a score. You must cite your information (tell which source it is from) Basic grammatical errors are more heavily weighted than higher level errors (fragments vs. misuse of semi-colon; there, their, they re vs. misspelling of multisyllabic word)

Revision Review word choice Review variation of sentence structure Review for components of the specified writing task ARMS (Add information, Remove repetitive or unnecessay information, Move information, Substitute vague words with better words) Adjust tone know your audience. Your audience is not your friend or a younger child you are teaching. Your audience is the knowledgeable audience.

Editing Check spelling. Please. Read essay silently to yourself. If your sentences don t make sense to you, then they probably need to be re-written. Proofread. Please. Pay attention to grammar Pay attention to mechanics (Punctuation!!! Capitalization!!!) Edit to improve style and clarity.

After reading the sources carefully, did you take notes and organize those notes? If you didn t outline or web your ideas. Use your response to help you. Planning your response

Purpose/Organization 4 The response has a clear and effective organizational structure, creating a sense of unity and completeness. The response is fully sustained and consistently and purposefully focused: claim is introduced, clearly communicated, and the focus is strongly maintained for the purpose, audience, and task consistent use of a variety of transitional strategies to clarify the relationships between and among ideas effective introduction and conclusion logical progression of ideas from beginning to end; strong connections between and among ideas with some syntactic variety alternate and opposing argument(s) are clearly acknowledged or addressed*

Evidence/Elaboration 4 The response provides thorough and convincing support/evidence for the argument(s) and claim that includes the effective use of sources (facts and details). The response clearly and effectively expresses ideas, using precise language: comprehensive evidence from sources is integrated; references are relevant and specific effective use of a variety of elaborative techniques* vocabulary is clearly appropriate for the audience and purpose effective, appropriate style enhances content *Elaborative techniques may include the use of personal experiences that support the argument.

Conventions are on a 2 point scale 2 The response demonstrates an adequate command of conventions: adequate use of correct sentence formation, punctuation, capitalization, grammar usage, and spelling

1960 election won by a young handsome Kennedy. Nixon was getting over a cold and looked sick on camera for the debate. In 1964, 1968, and 1972 no one arranged debates. They didn t see the need for debates due to various political issues and the overwhelming popularity of Johnson in 1964 and Nixon in 1972. In 1976, Carter won the presidential election. One of the main reasons is people did not trust the seated government due to the Watergate scandal which led to Nixon s impeachment and resignation. In 1980, Reagan won the election. He was known as the Great Communicator and was very telegenic. He had been a successful actor in Hollywood before getting into politics. In 1988, George H.W. Bush won (the father). Reagan s popularity helped. In 1992, a young Clinton won the election. He was very good with public speaking. In 2000, George W. Bush (the son) won the election over Al Gore. Gore was very stiff when speaking. Bush had more of a folksy appeal. Background information you need.

Ticket out Do this ticket out on your bellringer and turn in. What is the most important idea or skill you learned about the performance task? Why is it important?
