John Sullivan We are very pleased to welcome our guest speaker for this year s Commemoration Evening Awards Ceremony. John Sullivan is a former Royal Marines Commando with nine years experience. He has operated in some of the world s most challenging jungle, desert and arctic environments. He began his survival training career by teaching basic skills to young adults with learning and behavioural difficulties as well as leading school and college groups on life-changing expeditions to Namibia, Belize and Borneo. In 2007 John moved on to freelance consultancy, using his first-hand knowledge and a rare network of in-country contacts to advise media organisations and expedition leaders on how best to experience the cultures and natural environments of the countries they wished to explore. He became an invaluable adviser to countless expeditions and was selected by the BBC to make all in-country arrangements for their programmes filming 'Last Man Standing' in 2008 and 'Extreme Dreams' in 2009. Channel 5 too has utilised his incredible local knowledge for their programme 'Unbreakables' filmed in 2009. In 2010 John set up from scratch the documentary 'Eating with Cannibals' filmed in Papua New Guinea for the National Geographic Channel. Most recently he assisted with the making of The Island, a Norwegian documentary where he provided invaluable survival training to enable contestants to survive on an uninhabited island for one month armed with little but a knife and machete. His media work continues with projects currently in preparation. John s remaining time is spent in the UK passing on his enthusiasm for the natural world, and his insight into surviving in its wildest regions. He is a regular feature at Duke of Edinburgh Gold Presentations which take place annually at St James Palace; where we first heard his inspirational story and we welcome him to The Knights Templar School tonight.

2017 Award Citations Bhupinder Shergill Memorial Awards for Work Experience: Benjamin Buky Benjamin is a thoughtful individual who was keen to gain a positive experience from the outset of work experience at the start of Year 10. He completed his work experience at Isobel Hospice and received a glowing reference as a result. They commented that he was a joy to have around and that he approached the experience with great focus and maturity. While he was there he assisted with admin and IT issues. He had a great deal to offer the workplace and should be proud of himself. Bhupinder Shergill Memorial Awards for Work Experience: Poppy Harris Poppy completed her work experience at a hairdresser s. She was helpful, friendly and worked well with the team throughout. Although Poppy is now keen to explore other possibilities for her future career she has said that without the experience she would not have gained a part-time job or the ability to carefully consider her future options. She also commented recently on how important her interview with the Youth Connexions Careers Advisor had been. Overall work experience was a hugely valuable experience for Poppy and she is to be commended. Bhupinder Shergill Memorial Awards for Work Experience: Orla Murphy Orla was fully engaged throughout work experience and gave real consideration to the children and different teaching techniques to engage them in learning. She was able to show a kind and caring attitude and she worked well with other staff at the nursery. Orla attended the nursery when she was little and the staff all commented on what a delightful young lady she had become. It was a real pleasure to see Orla when I visited the placement. The experience allowed her to come out of her shell and show great confidence. Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Hannah Tyler Hannah was extremely hard working throughout her GCSEs in order to achieve an impressive set of results in the summer. Her hard work and commitment are reflected in her achievements. Hannah has always had a fantastic work ethic and thoroughly deserves her successes at GCSE. She took every challenge in her stride and constantly demonstrated a positive outlook on life. It was a pleasure to have her in the year group. We wish her the best of luck with her A Level studies. Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Felix Shaw Felix is a hard-working, self-motivated and independent student who has developed mature and positive relationships with his peers and his teachers. He takes pride in his education and in widening his knowledge and understanding; and this has been reflected in the excellent results he achieved this Summer. He is now studying in our Sixth Form and pursuing a wide range of extra-curricular interests. Well done for achieving this. Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Emily Northern Emily showed an extremely positive and enthusiastic approach to the work she did during her GCSEs. She was a mature and responsible student with an excellent attitude towards her learning. She was always willing to ask for help and reacted to this to improve her work. This helped her to achieve an excellent set of grades at GCSE. We wish her the best of luck with her further study.
Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Calum Crawford Calum impressed all of his teachers at GCSE with his hard work, motivation and the desire to achieve as highly as possible. His determination to carry on as normal despite health issues was inspirational. He was rewarded with a superb set of results; the majority of which were A*. In most subjects Calum achieved at least one grade above his target. Always cheerful and polite, he was a pleasure to teach. He is a worthy recipient of this award. Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Theo Fraser-Williams Theo is to be congratulated on his excellent GCSE results which included 4 A*s. This enabled him to achieve a set of grades which went well beyond his targets! This was no mean feat and Theo achieved his success through hard work, determination and effective organisation! In short he was a mature and responsible student with an excellent attitude towards his learning. Well done. Mark Goddard Prize for High Endeavour in the GCSE Exams: Glen Hargreaves Glen s determination to do well in his GCSEs bore fruit with a very pleasing set of exam results. He worked incredibly hard during last year and was committed to performing at and achieving his very best. He is to be congratulated for his commitment, engagement and determination because these qualities enabled him to achieve and often surpass his target grades. This was a terrific achievement, of which Glen should be justly proud. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Amelia Chappell Amelia is a hard-working, self-motivated and independent student who developed mature and positive relationships with her peers and her teachers throughout Year 10 and 11. She did exceptionally well at GCSE and should be justly proud of her achievements. She showed solid determination to do well and achieve her potential in all aspects of her study; which is clearly evidenced by the remarkable string of 9 A*s. Undoubtedly, she is a worthy recipient of this award. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Benjamin Summer Benjamin did brilliantly in his exams and we know that this is not just a result of his natural abilities but also the immense hard work and the quiet determination he has shown. He deserves his remarkable grades and we wish him the best of luck in the future, whatever he decides to do. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Lia Groves Lia did remarkably well at GCSE. She showed a determined strength of mind to do well and realise her potential. Her fantastic work ethic never faltered and she thoroughly deserves her successes at GCSE. She took every challenge in her stride and constantly demonstrated a positive outlook on life. It was a pleasure to have her in the year group. Her outstanding string of 9 A*s undoubtedly shows that she is a very worthy recipient of this award. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Jai Garcha Jai s excellent results at GCSE are a reflection of the capability of this young man. His hard work and determination meant he was able to secure A* grades in virtually every faculty throughout KTS. A diligent and hard-working student, we feel confident that Jai Garcia is a name we ll be hearing a lot of in the future!
School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Benjamin Kingsbury Benjamin's amazing achievement in his GCSEs was truly remarkable. As his form tutor, there were times when I was a little concerned that Benjamin was not as organised as he could be, but the fact is that he is clearly a young man of supreme intellect and great skill. I'm sure he will go on to achieve many great things in his life! Really well done Benjamin! School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Charles Palinkas Charles is to be congratulated on his excellent GCSE results. He achieved his success through hard work and by maintaining consistently high standards in all aspects of his studies and by taking an enthusiastic approach to acquire knowledge and skills. In addition, Charles found time to pursue interests in music and sport and represented the school on many occasions, for which he should be proud. We wish him every success for the future. His actual results far exceeded his target grades, which bears testament to hard work and flair that James exhibits with respect to school work. A stunning nine of his GCSEs were either A or above. A fantastic guitarist as well, he should be extremely proud of what he has achieved. Well done, James. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Samuel Prior Samuel went above and beyond what was necessary to secure an outstanding set of GCSE results. His tenacity and dedication to each of his subjects in the run up to his exams enabled him to achieve great success which I am sure will put him in good stead as an A Level student. School Prizes for Outstanding Achievement at GCSE: Rosie Muge Rosie worked diligently all through her GCSEs and surpassed her high target grades on four occasions, with nine A or A* grades. As a Young Leader for the Scouts, Rosie was excellent at time management and achieving her goals. Rosie is a truly remarkable student and individual, with a consistently positive outlook on life which is to be admired. She is now pursuing continued excellence in our A Level and we know she will succeed. Esther M. Brookes Awards for Application and Achievement at GCSE: Ria Innerarity Ria has been recognised for her excellent achievement at GCSE and should be very proud of her efforts. Having balanced tennis training with her education throughout her school career, Danielle made the choice to concentrate fully on her GCSE qualifications and this paid off. It is clear that she is very hardworking and committed to her studies. Her success can be attributed to her very high level of organisation and maturity beyond her years. She has been quick to learn what is required to make a success of her time in sixth form and her self-motivation is impressive. On top of all this academic success, Amy continues to be a very happy student who is a pleasure to know and exudes enthusiasm in all she does. I wish her every success at University. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Rebecca Wray Rebecca has used her fantastic mathematical skills to achieve to a high level in all her subjects. Combined with an ability to learn independently, she is a great example of someone who has a talent for hard work. Rebecca is a modest yet brilliant student and her skills have shone since arriving at Knights Templar. She throws herself wholeheartedly into every aspect of school life and deserves all her success. We have no doubt that this is the start of a hugely successful career for Rebecca.
School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Thomas Baxter Thomas has been a delight to teach in all of his subjects and is to be congratulated on his fabulous AS results, of three A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and a B in Geography. These reflect his hard work and dedication to his studies. Thomas is a keen and self-motivated learner and should be proud of his achievement. Well done to a worthy recipient of this award. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Isaac Boxall Isaac s continued success is well deserved. He has shown commitment, resilience and fortitude throughout his AS Level studies. This is especially commendable at sixth form when the stakes are so high. He will undoubtedly repeat this success as he heads towards his A level exams and in the future, beyond the gates of The Knights Templar School. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Lottie Brignall Lottie is a conscientious and independent student who has established mature and positive relationships with her peers and her teachers. She made excellent progress in Year 12, showing creativity, dedication and willingness to learn. Lottie has natural flair as a writer, artist and designer; she produces work of the highest level and sets herself high personal standards. She has the ability to communicate complex ideas with flair. Her ideas are creative and she is determined when solving problems. Lottie is a pleasure to teach. She is most deserving of the School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Annie Clark Annie is a diligent student with a clear view of what she wants to achieve. She is determined, hardworking and well organised with excellent time management skills. As a mathematician she shows aptitude in both the pure and applied aspects of the course and quickly grasps new concepts. In Biology she has shown creativity and initiative when solving practical problems alongside regularly demonstrating excellent powers of expression and analysis of biological problems. Annie is an excellent role model for all students and gives her time freely to support staff and students of all ages with their studies. All of her subject tutors comment on her incredible motivation and determination to succeed. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Amanda Ludbrook Amanda is proof that great motivation, organisation and dedication are qualities of high achieving students. When faced with difficulty, they persist; when faced with challenge, they endure and when faced with opportunity, they flourish. This is absolutely true of Amanda and she is, consequently, a worthy recipient of this award. She has been a diligent student at AS level and her determination and hard-working attitude have borne great fruit. School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Priya Mann Priya has been a delight to teach in all of her subjects and is to be congratulated on her fabulous AS results, which saw her achieve three A grades in Maths, Economics and Sociology. These grades reflect her consistent hard work and dedication to her studies. Priya should be justly proud of her achievement and deserves to do well. Well done to a worthy recipient of this award.
School Award for Outstanding Achievement in AS Levels: Ibukunoluwa Odumade Ibukunoluwa has proved to be an excellent independent learner who takes the responsibility to improve his overall knowledge and understanding by undertaking extra reading and asking searching questions of his teachers. In Mathematics he has developed excellent problem solving abilities, choosing the correct strategy and clearly demonstrating his chosen methods and calculations. In Chemistry he has proved to have a highly competitive streak - fuelling his desire to do well. As a proactive learner in Physics he has carried out much research to advance his learning during the course. Keen to succeed even further, Ibukunoluwa is currently studying for 4 A levels. School Awards for Excellent Effort in AS Levels: George Acquaah George is a highly motivated and committed student who achieved above his target grades at AS level. He is to be commended for the further reading he does around his subjects. He is always willing to discuss what he has read and is happy to look at every side of the argument to inform his developed opinion. He loves to debate and is happy to take what is sometimes the controversial view point to really understand the topic. George is unfailingly cheerful in his approach to both staff that teach him and his peers and his wry sense of humour will take him far. We are extremely proud of him. School Awards for Excellent Effort in AS Levels: Sukhpreet Rayatt Sukhpreet is a hard-working, self-motivated and independent student who has developed mature and positive relationships with her peers and her teachers. She made excellent progress over the course of Year 12, showing perseverance, dedication and willingness to learn. Sukhpreet is an enthusiastic and confident student; no problem ever seems too difficult for her to overcome and she enjoys rising to a challenge. Her teachers have always found her a pleasure to teach. She is most deserving of the School Award for Excellent Effort in AS Levels. School Awards for Excellent Effort in AS Levels: Fern Barlow Fern is a diligent student with a clear view of what she wants to achieve. She is determined, hardworking and well organised with excellent time management skills. She has worked hard throughout her AS Levels and has made an impressive effort to overcome the challenges of studying in the Sixth Form to meet with success and is thus a deserving recipient of this award. School Awards for Excellent Effort in AS Levels: Freja Hughes Freja has been a motivated and hardworking student whose attitude and dedication has been to her credit. Her persistence and ability are both evident in her academic and extra-curricular success. Her excellent grades reflect her consistent hard work and commitment to her studies. Freja should be justly proud of her achievement and deserves to do well. She is a deserving recipient of this award. School Awards for Excellent Effort in AS Levels: Jake Northern Jake is a student who clearly set out to achieve his goals in a positive manner with a quiet, no-fuss approach. Always polite and friendly, he impressed his teachers with his commitment and contribution to class. Despite being a quiet student, Jake always took the approach that it is better to ask for help rather than struggle to understand and possibly fail. This no doubt added to his success. Both his teachers and I wish him all the best for his future.
School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Jeremy Beard Jeremy was an asset to the sixth form as a whole, not just because he was an excellent student who gained outstanding A level results, but because of his commitment to our wider school ethos and in particular to the music department. He made excellent progress over the course of Year 13, which showed his perseverance, dedication and willingness to learn. We wish him the very best for a bright and successful future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Jessica Farey Jessica impressed all of her teachers with her diligence, motivation and determination to succeed at the highest level. A true academic, she continued to study four A Level subjects in Year 13, whilst also contributing to the wider life of the School. She was richly rewarded with a fantastic set of A Level results. Jessica is currently reading for a degree in English and Sociology at the University of Surrey and we wish her all the very best for the future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Kate Bennett Kate was a talented and enthusiastic learner throughout her years at Knights Templar. Always consistent, she studied hard and also participated in the life of the school as a NewsKnight presenter. She continued to study four A level subjects in year 13 achieving two A*s in Biology and Maths, two As in Chemistry and Further Maths and a grade B in her EPQ. She now studies Biochemistry /Research Abroad at the Imperial College London. Her calm, confident and mature approach to her studies will continue to be an asset to her learning. We wish her a bright future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Matthew Cockburn A bright a personable student throughout his time at The Knights Templar School, Matthew exceeded all expectation with his A Level results. He should be extremely proud of his academic achievements as he worked extremely hard to achieve them. When faced with difficulty, he persisted; when he encountered challenge, he endured and when provided with opportunity, he flourished. Throughout his time at school he pursued wider interests on top of his studies and showed that he was an excellent all round student. Congratulations! School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Charlie Langshaw Charlie was a very intelligent and quietly determined student. During his A Level studies, he consistently demonstrated his technical abilities within the sciences and particularly excelled in Chemistry. He successfully completed the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and showed great initiative within his chosen subject area by securing impressive work placements during his time in the sixth form. Charlie achieved wonderfully well in his A Level exams and is now studying Chemistry at The University of Nottingham. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Megan Pain During her time studying for her A Levels, Megan constantly set herself thought-provoking questions and pushed her own limitations. Her excellent set of grades: one A and two A*s is testament to her resolve, determination and passion for success. We wish her every success in the future.
School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Rachel Paxton Rachel is a true fighter who didn t let small set-backs deter her from her goal of achieving her grades so that she could follow her chosen career path. These grades, which included two A*s in History and Maths and an A grade in Biology enabled her to begin an Anthropology degree at UCL. Rachel achieved her success through hard work, determination and vastly improved organisation. A hearty well done, and all the best for the future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Helen Inman Helen embarked upon her sixth form studies with natural interest and enthusiasm; skills she had shown in abundance whilst moving up through the school. She instantly displayed the study skills of a university student, even in year 12, and it was quickly clear that she was more than capable of pursuing a place at a top university. Her two A s and an A* shows that she is a very worthy recipient of this award. We know she will go on to achieve great things in her future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Lucy Merrell Lucy is a star pupil in many ways, balancing her responsibilities as head girl and her studies very well and succeeding in both. She achieved an A* grade in A Level Biology, two A grades in Sports Studies and English Literature and an A* in her EPQ. She now studies Sport/Exercise Science at the University of Bath. Her ability to organise, plan and work under pressure will continue to be an asset to her learning and we wish her the very best for a bright future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Joseph Penny Joseph was a motivated, hardworking student who always looked for ways to improve. He developed into a great problem solver during his time in sixth form. As a result of his endeavours, he was rewarded with a fantastic set of A-level results. Always a pleasure to teach, Joseph also impressed us with his willingness to support others in his classes. Joseph is currently reading for a degree in Computer Science at the University of Loughborough. We wish him the very best. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Amit Shah Amit is a determined and energetic individual. While his sense of humour was appreciated by teachers and peers, he always took his studies very seriously. His excellent set of results, two As and an A* demonstrate that he is truly capable of academic success, especially in areas where he is enthusiastic about learning more about them. We wish him every success in the future. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Sam Tomlinson An excellent independent learner throughout his time in the sixth form, Sam was one of those students who seized the responsibility to improve his overall knowledge and understanding by constantly pushing his own boundaries. He often undertook extra reading and asked searching questions of his teachers. His excellent set of grades: three As and an A*, are testament to his determination, ambition and passion for learning. We wish him every success in the future.
School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Becky Ludbrook Becky is a fiercely intelligent student who has the capacity to provide in-depth analysis of texts and develop this further by skilfully articulating her own viewpoints. Her motivation to read, research and further her academic understanding was evident in her excellent A Level results which consisted of 3 As in Biology, Geography and English Literature. Becky is a true academic and is now applying her skill-set to a degree in English at The University of East Anglia. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Sam Oram Sam is a real all-rounder who has excelled in his studies and sporting achievements at Knights Templar School. He continued to study 4 A Level subjects in his year 13 as he was interested in all of these areas; achieving an A grade in Economics, an A in History, an A in Maths and a B in Further Maths. He now studies Economics at the University of Nottingham and I am sure his enthusiasm and cheerful personality will continue to be an asset to his learning. We wish him the very best. School Award for Outstanding Achievement at A Level: Alex Smith Alex is a determined and a quietly confident individual. He constantly showed a commitment towards his studies, and he was rewarded with a well-deserved set of results. Three As show what he is capable of, especially in areas that he is passionate about. We wish him every success in the future. School Award for Excellent Effort at A Level: Sophie Cowie Sophie was a conscientious, well-motivated student with the desire and determination to succeed. She showed consistent excellence throughout her studies at KTS Sixth Form, and applied herself fully to all her studies. Her excellent A level results are a result of her hard work and dedication. We wish her the very best for a bright future. School Award for Excellent Effort at A Level: Jemma Fairey Jemma is to be congratulated on her very good year 13 results. She achieved a D1 in Sports Studies and a grade C in Financial Studies; grades which were achieved through hard work, determination and a positive attitude to learning. She now studies Sports Development/Coaching at the University of Lincoln. Her cheery personality and careful attention to presentation will continue to be an asset to her future path and we wish her every success for a bright future. School Award for Excellent Effort at A Level: Matthew Reynolds Matthew demonstrated high levels of motivation and desire to achieve academically, as well as in his sporting endeavours. He was a very personable individual, which was not only apparent through his excellent relationships with staff but also through his manner when coaching younger pupils in the school. Matthew successfully balanced the rigours of academic study with his busy sporting schedule, achieving excellent exam results while playing football for the semi-professional Biggleswade Town FC. Matthew is now studying Sports Development and Coaching at The University of Lincoln where he represents the university football team and is coaching at the Lincoln City FC Academy. We wish him a bright future.
School Award for Excellent Effort at A Level: Joanna Staines Joanna is a highly conscientious student who worked to her full potential during her time at KTS. She always worked with the utmost commitment and always strove to do her very best in her studies. Her achievement at A Level is justly deserved and her hard work is reflected in her excellent results. We wish her a bright and successful future. Cohen Prize for Upper School Creative Writing: Lottie Brignall Lottie writes with fluency and imagination; she has natural flair and a detailed understanding of a broad range of creative styles. Lottie approaches her studies with confidence and the determination to hone her skills. She is thoughtful, reflective and responsive to advice. Lottie has learned to effectively apply her growing technical knowledge to shape her creative responses. Her portfolio for AS level Creative Writing demonstrated originality and technical expertise. For the artistry and maturity with which she is able to express her ideas, capturing her imaginative view of the world, Lottie is well-deserving of the Cohen prize. George Waters Cup for Art: Izzie Rodgers Izzie is one of the most talented painters we have seen. She loved working in oils and produced many magnificent portraits, building up layers of paint in such a way as to achieve the most wonderful translucency. With her exceptional eye for detail Izzie showed patience, determination and dedication in the execution of her work and was undeterred by the many hours it took to complete each piece. She is a fantastic artist. Izzy also receives an Honourable Mention for Photography. Business Applied Prize: Alfie Laughton The results for the class were exceptional and a large number of students have continued in their academic studies with Business as their preferred choice. However, it was Alfie who was the most exceptional student, always aiming high and producing work of outstanding quality. His final grade of AB was a superb achievement as it involved a substantial amount of time outside of lessons working on his assignments. He showed real determination to succeed with all work completed to the highest level. In finishing this course of study, Alfie wrote The truth is you do not know what is going to happen tomorrow I particularly enjoyed Applied Business as I could see the relevance to my future career choices. It was a privilege to teach Alfie. He thoroughly deserves this award and we wish him all the best for in his future career aspirations. Business Studies Prize: Sophie Cowie It was a difficult choice to make this year as a large number of the class achieved well above their target grades and showed a real commitment to this subject. However, throughout the two years of her Business Studies A Level, Sophie showed a level of enthusiasm and commitment to her studies that truly demonstrated her strength in this subject. She regularly read around the subject and always worked with interest in every topic area. Sophie always asked pertinent questions to fully develop her knowledge, and she always listened to advice on how to improve her written work. She was a diligent student who deserved the A* grade she finally achieved. Sophie has qualities that make her a strong academic and she deserves every success. I wish her well in the future.
Economics Prize: Megan Pain There were some excellent results in Economics this summer with a number of students choosing to continue their study at University. As a teacher, even when the decision for an award is made simpler by such an exceptional result as Megan s I still found myself reflecting on the journeys of some of the other characters in the class and the effort and dedication that led to their achievements. Megan consistently excelled throughout her two years of sixth form economics. The commitment and drive she displayed began on the first day in class and never faltered. Her natural ability coupled with a strong work ethic, a continuing desire to improve and her enjoyment of the subject was impressive. In a class of confident economists her talent stood out and was respected by fellow students. I have no doubt she will be successful, whatever path she chooses to take, and I very much look forward to hearing about the next part of her journey. Megan also receives an Honourable Mention for Ethics & Philosophy. Maud King Prize for English: Jessica Farey Jessica is an outstanding student whose passion for English Literature was very much in evidence throughout both GCSE and A Level study. She is a perceptive and forward thinking student; her ability to understand the many layers of meaning within texts resulted in highly engaging and impressive written work, notably her Critical Theory coursework, which was intelligent and thought provoking. Jessica is not one to sing her own praises or attract attention to herself; she is quietly confident, mature and modest. She has a natural talent for this subject and she thoroughly deserves the Maud King Award. Anna Ohtani Prize for English Literature: Ashling Galley-Coulthard The Anna Ohtani prize is awarded to the student who has most impressed us with their attitude to learning and their enthusiasm for English Literature. Ashling is a very worthy winner. She has proved herself to be a dedicated and determined student whose positive attitude has impressed me greatly. Her keen interest in the subject and her ability to write creatively as well as analytically were assets to her during the course. She has overcome adversity to achieve success in English, demonstrating insight and maturity in her responses to Literature texts. We wish her every success in the future. Jan Waite Prize for the Extended Project: Rebecca Wray This is the first year this prize has been awarded and has been donated to the school by Mrs Diane Robinson in memory of Mrs Jan Waite, a dedicated English teacher who passed away in December, 2014. This Prize recognises the commitment and dedication of a student who reads enthusiastically around a subject they feel great passion for. It recognises and celebrates the great influence that reading widely can have on a students learning in any subject area; and is a fitting memorial to a teacher who was passionate about her own subject area. Rebecca thoroughly deserves to be the first student to presented with the Extended Project Prize. Her 6000-word dissertation entitled Is neural development more important during the prenatal stages or after birth? was based on a huge amount of research and her well-crafted writing deserved the A* grade it was given. I was equally impressed with Rebecca s answer on her EPQ when she was questioned by Lord Robert Winston during the opening of the Science Centre in September. His interest in this area is well-documented. Rebecca has taken Biology, Chemistry and Maths through to A2 level and we wish her well with her application to Oxford, where she hopes to study Chemistry.
Ethics and Philosophy Prize: Katie McEvoy Katie achieved a stunning result in this subject; including full marks in one component. This was solely down to her heroic efforts throughout the two years of the course. She overcame a distinct lack of confidence in her own abilities and significant initial difficulties with subject matter and content through a combination of constant hard work and the determination to act on help given to improve. She certainly achieved this goal and should be proud of the grade that she gained and the confidence she gained on the journey to its fulfilment. Katie is one of our greatest success stories. I wish her every success in her chosen course and eventual career. Geography Prize: Matthew Cockburn During his time studying Geography A level, Matthew impressed us with his curiosity, questioning approach, interest in current affairs and extensive reading, which demonstrated his great interest in geographical concepts and case studies from contrasting areas of the world. He often set himself challenging questions and engaged well in fieldwork activities and geographical debates to further his understanding. His humour and challenge of theory, students and teachers views, often made for lively discussions. Nevertheless, Matthew was always a team player, supportive of other students as well as all departmental initiatives and he thoroughly deserves this award. After gaining an excellent A level result in Geography, followed by a gap year to go travelling, Matthew is due to study Geography at Manchester University later this year. We wish him every success in the future. Matthew also receives an Honourable Mention for PE and Statistics. James Gilmour Prize for History: Lena Harding Lena worked with great determination throughout her A Level studies. She had a genuine interest in the past, engaging fully with the topics studied, both in class discussions/activities and wider reading. Lena rose to the challenge of the more difficult aspects of the course, with such a willingness to work that extra essays and skyping from Holland for coursework feedback became par for the course. Her positivity and productivity ensured she ultimately achieved a well-deserved top grade. Lena had an excellent work ethic, but also demonstrated huge enthusiasm for school life and History that made her a joy to teach! ICT Applied Prize: Byron Alfad During the three years that Byron did the Applied ICT he worked hard and relished every challenge set. Byron learned new skills during the three years and was always happy to help other members of the class when they were stuck. He showed an aptitude for both spreadsheets and databases and relished the challenges set in both of these units. Everyone in the ICT department would like to wish Byron all the best in the future. David Oliver Prize, Linguist of the Year: Michael Micele Throughout his language studies Michael demonstrated the qualities of a good linguist; he had an inquisitive interest in the structure and grammar behind the language and he was very keen to explore the culture of the Francophone countries. He approached his studies methodically and most of all he was always willing to have a go and experiment with both the written and spoken word. His good grades in both French and Italian were richly deserved and we wish him well for the future.
Media Studies Prize: Polly Pritchard Throughout her Media Studies course Polly displayed huge enthusiasm, great patience and an earnest desire to learn and improve. Her cheerful manner was always a pleasure to encounter and she fully deserved her excellent result, which she achieved through her continuous hard work and perseverance. She was a real asset to the department and a great ambassador for the subject, encouraging and helping others to achieve greater success and fulfil their potential too. We wish her every success in the future and look forward to hearing of her future achievements. John Street Award for Outstanding Musical Achievement: Barnaby Taylor Barnaby is an outstanding musician who has contributed whole-heartedly to extra-curricular music for the past 7 years. He is an accomplished singer, trumpeter, and bass guitarist but he also plays many other instruments. As an academic Barnaby excelled in composition, receiving full marks at AS for this module. His excellent understanding of harmony and chords often lead to him helping others, whilst his wide knowledge of this subject and of different genres led to many interesting general listening sessions. Barnaby was always fun to have in class but he never stopped working hard, achieving a top grade in this subject. We wish him the very best for the future. Mathematics Prize: Jeremy Beard Jeremy is an exceptional student who worked with determination and consistency throughout the two years of his studies. His solutions were concise, always demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject. Jeremy was mature in his approach to his work and studied an additional module independently - gaining full marks. He was also always willing to help other members of the group in a supportive way. Jeremy thoroughly deserved his two A* grades in the subject and we wish him well in his future studies. Jeremy also receives an Honourable Mention for Maths and Physics. Billinger Cup for Outstanding Mathematical Achievement: Sam Tomlinson Sam showed great determination and perseverance throughout this course. His module results were outstanding, achieving 90% or more in 5 of the 6 modules. His A* was a tremendous achievement. He also secured an A in AS Further Maths, which involved teaching himself the Statistics 2 module. It was a pleasure to teach Sam over the two years and he proved himself to be a natural mathematician. Sam thoroughly deserves this award and we wish him every success in the future. Sam also receives an Honourable Mention for Economics. Susan Packard Memorial Cup for Girls PE: Lucy Merrell Lucy is an exceptional student. Her excellent attitude to studies, high motivation levels and determination to succeed at the very highest level make her stand out from other students. Lucy has been both an outstanding performer and an inspirational role model in PE throughout her time at Knights Templar. Her dedication, commitment and passion for sport is second to none. Lucy has the rare ability to always see the best in people and support them in such a way that they feel valued and inspired. Her willingness to give up her time to support less able students in PE has had a hugely significant impact on both pupil progress and staff professional development.
Boys PE Prize: Matthew Reynolds Matthew s critical thinking and perceptive questioning ensured he achieved well above his target grade in PE. In addition to this he is an outstanding performer and team player. He encapsulates everything that a team player should be, consistently showing superb leadership both on and off the pitch, whilst organising teams and training sessions and holding an unfailingly positive outlook. Matthew has been a true asset to the school and the PE department and we wish him the very best for the future. Michael Muir Prize for Photography: Imogen Hornby Imogen constantly displayed an astonishing resourcefulness and invention in her photography. She expertly combined challenging ideas with powerful imagery to produce an exciting body of work of which she should be justly proud. With an insatiable appetite for all kinds of learning and discovery, she embarked upon her projects in the true spirit of an explorer, while conveying her ideas with fluency and flair. Her images never failed to be deeply subtle, yet strikingly beautiful. Psychology Prize: Alanah Cornelius Alanah showed great insight and understanding of psychology from the beginning of Year12, providing thoughtful comments and contributions in class discussions. Despite a good start, the year did not go well, culminating in disappointing AS results. There were many factors involved but the important outcome was that Alanah made a decision to turn those results around. Although the initial resolve faltered once or twice, Alanah worked incredibly hard on both AS and A2 modules and achieved a final A grade which is a true reflection of her ability. We are exceedingly impressed with her dedication and she should be very proud of her achievement. Jim Addison Awards for Science: Biology: Bethany Jones From her inquisitive nature in the first few lessons of Year 12, it was clear to both of her class teachers that rather than simply studying the subject, Bethany was going to go beyond and develop in to a first rate Biologist. Curious and inquisitive every lesson, she was always supportive of the efforts of those around. With sheer determination she was able to achieve the highest grades and constantly pushed the boundaries of her own understanding through membership of the Biology Society - a fact also recognised by her success in Biology Olympiad, medalling in the 2016 competition. She is a much deserved winner of the Jim Addison award. Bethany also receives an Honourable Mention for Geography. Jim Addison Awards for Science: Chemistry: Thomas Luck Thomas demonstrated the resilience and determination we wish to see in all our students. He worked relentlessly hard to achieve his target, consistently producing work of outstanding quality and clearly demonstrating the amount of time and effort he put into his studies outside of the classroom. Thomas was rewarded for his efforts by improving his AS Chemistry result by two grades at A2 an outstanding but thoroughly deserved achievement that makes him the worthy recipient of this award. It was a pleasure to teach him, and we wish Thomas every success in the future. Jim Addison Awards for Science: Physics: Helen Inman Helen always had a real interest in Physics and Engineering as well as a huge desire to succeed. She was determined to do whatever it took to achieve her goals but always found time to help others work towards theirs. She was a pleasure to have in class, always willing to go the extra mile, even if it meant getting it wrong now and again. Helen however, learned quickly and did not make the same mistake twice! We would like to wish Helen all the very best success for the future - whatever path she chooses. Helen also receives an Honourable Mention for Maths.
