Order f service in effect. Tuesday and Thursday 10:45 am 12:15 pm Wednesday 9:30 am 11:30 am Academic advising takes pririty. N ther ffice hurs are available fr curse related questins. E-mail: maxwell@math.utexas.edu email rule apply. Telephne: (512) 471-7169 Office IV. Teaching Assistant: Office: Office Hurs: E-mail: Telephne: Learning Assistants: V. Prerequisite and Degree Relevance: The prerequisite fr this class is a grade 70% r better n the ALEKS assessment, and there will be n exceptins made t this requirement. If yu d nt meet this prerequisite, yu will be drpped frm this class n the 4 th class day (September 4). Only ne f the fllwing may be cunted: M 403K, M 408K, M 408C, M 408L r M 408N. Remember that M 408N/S/M is the sequence designed fr students wh may nt Page -1-

have taken calculus previusly. Students wh have seen calculus and have dne well might be better placed in the faster M 408C/D sequence. Calculus is ffered in three equivalent sequences: an accelerated tw-semester sequence, M 408C/D, and tw three-semester sequences, M 408K/L/M and 408N/S/M. The latter is restricted t students in the Cllege f Natural Sciences. Cmpletin (with grades f C- r better) f ne f these calculus sequences is required fr students earning a mathematics degree. Fr ther degrees, the tw-semester sequence M 408N/S satisfies the calculus requirement. M 408N/S are als a valid prerequisite fr sme upper-divisin mathematics curses, including M 325K (Discrete Mathematics), M 427K (Advanced Calculus), M 340L (Linear Algebra), and M 362K (Prbability). This curse carries the Quantitative Reasning flag. Quantitative Reasning curses are designed t equip yu with skills that are necessary fr understanding the types f quantitative arguments yu will regularly encunter in yur adult and prfessinal life. VI. Descriptin f the Curse: M 408N is the first-semester calculus curse f the three-curse calculus sequence. It is directed at students in the natural sciences, and is restricted t Cllege f Natural Science Students. The emphasis in this curse is n prblem slving, nt n the presentatin f theretical cnsideratins. While the curse includes sme discussin f theretical ntins, these are supprting rather than primary. Tpics include a review f expnential, lgarithmic and inverse functins; tangents and velcity, limits and limit laws, cntinuity, limits at infinity, the definitin f the derivative, at a pint and as a functin; derivative rules, derivatives f plynmials, expnential and trignmetric functins, the chain rule, implicit differentiatin, derivatives f lgarithmic functins, rates f change in science, related rates, and linear apprximatin; extrema, the Mean Value Therem, hw derivatives affect graphs, indeterminate frms and L Hpital s Rule, ptimizatin, and anti-derivatives; areas and distances, the definite integral, and the Fundamental Therem f Calculus. A. Full Grup Classes: The M 408N classes at the University f Texas are presented in a flipped frmat. That is, befre class students get familiar with the material by reading the textbk, and/r watching nline vide presentatins f the material (e.g. Learning Mdules). Prir t class, students cmplete an n-line assignment (QUEST). During class, instead f traditinal lecture, students wrk n varius prblemslving activities. E.g., wrking individually n a prblem, wrking in grups t slve prblem, writing sample examinatin prblems, sme lecture, gssip grup quizzes, peer instructin, hmewrk quizzes, and ther. After class, students cmplete traditinal textbk assignments. B. Discussin Sectins: Our teaching assistant is in-charge f yur Mnday and Wednesday discussin sectins f apprximately 40 students each. Classrm activities are chsen by the TA and will likely include: questins and answers, wrking n hmewrk prblems in grups, presentatins f slutins (crrect and incrrect) t the discussin grup, hmewrk quizzes, and etcetera. Page -2-

INITIAL HERE VII. Curse Objectives: Students will wrk n presentatin and cmmunicatin skills. Our fcus will be n understanding cncepts, ability t slve prblems, applicatins f calculus t a variety f situatins, and prviding cntext rather than applying frmulas. Persnal respnsibility and accuntability will be develped. VIII. X: Instructr Gals fr Students: In additin t mastering the mathematical cntent as described in sectin VIII: Learning Outcmes, I hpe that students 1) be psitive cntributrs in class, 2) are hnest with self and thers, 3) take respnsibility fr learning the curse cntent, 4) imprve self especially cmmunicatin acumen, and 5) learn calculus cncepts well enugh t succeed in M 408S and beynd. 1. Behavir that I wish t encurage: asking thughtful questins, using strengths t imprve weaknesses, hnesty (with self, peers, me), learning/understanding (e.g. defining variables, yu are the audience), discvering and challenging self and peers (names, strengths, weaknesses), helping class, mdeling prductive behavir, exceeding expectatins, participatin, cmmunicatin, learning abut yur classmates, and taking respnsibility (n excuses). INITIAL HERE 2. Behavir that I wish t discurage: Wlfram Alpha, sptty class participatin, class distractins including cell phne use, dishnesty (claim understand in class and while ding hmewrk, but nt n exams), memrizing frmulas, lking at slutins prir t attempting yurself, abusing slutins manuals, use f banned wrds (psted utside RLM 11.168) such as yu knw, very, like, it, this, that, but, basically, I m nt gnna lie, ignrance, wasting the time f yur classmates, excuses (psted utside RLM 11.168), cmplaining, whining, and crying. XI. Instructr Specific Curse Plicies: A. Make-up wrk: Examinatin 3 and yur cmprehensive final examinatin are scheduled fr Mnday December 17 th frm 2:00 pm 5:00 pm. There is n prvisin fr a make-up final examinatin. N late hmewrk, Quest assignments, pp quizzes r ther required wrk is accepted. B. Dishnesty: Cheating during an examinatin will result in a letter grade f F. Plagiarism r failing t credit the wrk f thers will result in a letter grade f F. Lying r misrepresentatin in any way will result in a letter grade f F. Allwing and cndning dishnest behavir will result in a letter grade f F. An fficial recrd will be sent t the Dean f Students.
