MEET THE CONSERVATOR, SLAVA POLISHCHUK Join us for a gallery talk on the exhibit, M ending the Past: Preservation of the Library s Treasures. The talk will be led by Slava Polishchuk, Brooklyn College s own conservator, and will include a tour of the current exhibit. See how Polishchuk has restored historic books, manuscripts and other archival materials, learn how rare books are stabilized, check out the conservation lab for yourself, and begin the academic year with full immersion into the exciting world of archives and community documentation.

OCTOBER 18, 2011 With a reading of Alfred s work by students in the Brooklyn College Theater Department THE PAPERS OF WILLIAM ALFRED A celebration of the writing of William Alfred ( 1922-1999) : poet, playwright, Brooklyn College alumnus, and beloved Harvard University professor. Come learn about Alfred s importance as an educator, poet, and playwright as we explore this highly unique collection featuring some of Alfred s unpublished writing, correspondence with individuals such as Gertrude Stein and Robert Lowell, and many personal items. FEBRUARY 7, 2012 With guest speaker Professor Lynda Day, Department of Africana Studies THE PAPERS OF REVEREND WILLIAM AUGUSTUS JONES JR. Reverend William Augustus Jones Jr. ( 1 934-2006 ) was a Baptist preacher, activist, author, professor, and pastor of Brooklyn s Bethany Baptist Church. His inspirational sermons were heard in Brooklyn and around the world, and he served as national president of Operation Breadbasket, the economic arm of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference founded by Martin Luther King, Jr. Come explore his legacy through his amazing archival collection, which features a letter from then-president Bill Clinton congratulating Reverend Jones on forty years of dedicated leadership, as well as materials on the boycott he led on the Atlantic and Pacific supermarket chain, his handwritten sermons, and so much more.

Join Brooklyn Borough Historian Ron Schweiger to celebrate Brooklyn s famous baseball team with a look at memorabilia from the Brooklyn College Archives, and from the Borough Historian s personal collection.

MAY 10, 2012 With guest speaker Daniella Romano, Vice President of Brooklyn Navy Yard Programs, Research and Archive THE USS BROOKLYN COLLECTION In 1951, the 303-pound bronze bell that once adorned the USS Brooklyn during World War II found a permanent home at Brooklyn College. Due to efforts by the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at Brooklyn College, the bell was returned to the borough for which it was named, and has had a home at Brooklyn College since then. Join Brooklyn Navy Yard archivist Daniella Romano for a lecture on the USS Brooklyn, and learn about the archival process related to working at such a historical location.
