Middle School Mathematics Certificate Program Program Outline: This sixteen-credit program is comprised of five content courses and one application course. It addresses major topics in the middle school curriculum and builds teacher content knowledge while incorporating pedagogical material. Each course includes modeling The Components of an Effective Lesson, Teacher Expectancies, linkage to high school and middle school math courses, connections to other disciplines, hands-on activities, interactive learning, and participation in a balanced delivery of instruction. This program is suited for both elementary and middle school teachers. Course Descriptions: Operations & Number Sets 2 Credits This two-credit course will address operations with the following numbers sets; whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, integers, exponentials. Great emphasis will be placed on answering the why behind the basic operations. (SUU MATH 5510-235; UNLV SCI 620a; Pathlore ID: RPMAT65000) Introduction to Probability/Statistics & Geometry Concepts 3 Credits This three-credit course is designed to make teachers more comfortable in their knowledge, understanding and application of middle school mathematics. Topics covered include: Simple and multi-stage probability, odds, counting methods, expected value, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, and graphing. (SUU MATH 5450-226; UNLV SCI 620b; Pathlore ID: RPMAT65001) Algebra for the Classroom Teacher 3 Credits This three-credit course will emphasize linking the concepts and skills taught in a first year algebra class to previously teamed material and outside experiences. The main topics in this course include: evaluating algebraic expressions, solving linear equations & inequalities, word problems, relations & functions, polynomials, solving quadratic equations, simplifying rational expressions, graphing linear equations, solving systems of linear & quadratic equations, solving higher-degree equations, and the rational root theorem. The required assignments involve participants in solving a variety of problems that would be appropriate for the middle level student. The problems require use of 10 problem solving strategies including: Going back to the definition, looking for a pattern, drawing a picture, examine a simpler problem, examine a related problem, guess and check, making a chart, identify a sub-goal, write an equation, and working backwards. This class does not have to be taken sequentially. (SUU MATH 5520-222; UNLV SCI 620e; Pathlore ID: RPMAT65003) Euclidean and Non Euclidean Geometry for Classroom Teachers 3 Credits This three-credit course will follow the curriculum taught in a high school geometry class with an emphasis on proofs. RPDP Secondary Mathematics & Science Variable Credit Program Program Description: Any trainings eligible for variable credit will be advertised as such. They may be advertised as Workshops, Seminars, Mini-Institutes, or under other names. Please check the advertising flyer for the specific training. Credit earned will be graduate level and will be offered through Southern Utah University. Credit is valid for salary advancement and re-licensure. A teacher may earn one credit for each 15 contact hours of fully-participated workshop time, up to a maximum of five credits per year. Training hours, from any eligible middle school or high school mathematics or science training, may be combined to meet the 15-hour requirement. There is no cost for these credits. Credit will be issued for all workshops in the Summer 2007 Semester. Credit will not be posted until approximately August 2007. Participants must register on PATHLORE/RATS for any workshop session they desire to take. A particular workshop topic may not be applied toward credit more than once in a given year. Workshops taken in school years prior to 2006 07 may not be applied toward 2006 07 credit. Workshops taken in school years prior to 2006 07 may be repeated in 2006 07 for credit. Workshops not applied for credit in school year 2006 07 may not be applied toward credit in subsequent years. Participants who want to earn the associated credit must accurately complete and submit a RPDP Variable Credit Tracking Form by May 14, 2007. (See sample below) The form will be available in April 2007 at, or at InterAct>School Link>RPDP. For more information, please contact Jeff Bostic (jbostic@interact.ccsd.net), 799-3828 x233 or David Thiel (dthiel@interact.ccsd.net), 799-3828 x256. RPDP Secondary Mathematics Summer Institutes Exeter Summer Institute This five-day summer institute is sponsored by the Sherman Fairchild Foundation and Phillips Exeter Academy, in conjunction with SNRPDP. It is designed for secondary mathematics teachers of Algebra I and above. The Exeter Summer Institute program consists of several courses to enhance mathematics content knowledge from conceptual and problem-solving perspectives. Each participant takes two courses during the week-long institute. Teachers attending the institute should prepare for an intense and rigorous mathematical experience. Homework is an integral part of each course. Past courses have included: Teaching the Fundamentals of Algebra I Using Geometer s Sketchpad to Integrate Algebra and Geometry Using a Hands-On Activities Based Approach in Algebra Teaching Geometry While Effectively Integrating Algebra Using a Hands-On Activities-Based Approach in Geometry Problem Solving in Algebra II Using a Hands-On Activities Based Approach in Algebra II and Above A Fresh Look at Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Their Applications Topics in Advanced High School Mathematics The Exeter Summer Institute is tentatively scheduled for June 18 22, 2007, 8:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Site is to be determined. Registration announcements will be sent out in February/March 2007.
