2019 RCA-KAIST Master s Degree Program 1. Overview The RCA-KAIST Master s Degree Program of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is designed to educate and train high-caliber students from the RCA Member States with the aim to preserve and enhance nuclear technology for RCA Member States. The graduates of the program have been contributing to the developments of nuclear and radiation technology for their countries by working in government supported R&D institutions, or government funded enterprises, universities etc. as elite leaders. This program has been implemented since March 2003 and 36 students in total from 11 countries have been accepted up to now. To finish the course, it takes up to 2 years regularly and students must satisfy certain requirements. 2. RCA-KAIST Scholarship RCA-KAIST program scholarship coverage is as follows; - Application fee (80,000 Korean Won see How to apply ) - 2 years Tuition (Approx. 8,200,000 Korean Won per academic year) - Stipend (1,000,000 Korean Won/month): to be paid monthly on 25th of each month for up to 23 months depending on the study period. - The economy-class one-way airfare from the nearest airport of the originating country to Incheon, Korea. NOTE: - If a student decides to withdraw from the program of study after he/she was offered admission, he/she must return the full amount of the scholarship (including application fee) received up to the time of withdrawal. - The local transportation from the airport to Daejeon, and the returning airfare after finishing the course is not covered by the program. 2

Information about KAIST - On-campus housing (dormitory) can be arranged but the cost must be borne individually. At present, a 2-beds standard room at KAIST costs about 800,000 Korean Won/6 months (slightly different depend on each dormitory) and must be paid before the beginning of each semester. - KAIST provides family apartment for married students near campus. You can register for this apartment after arriving at KAIST but there is a high competition. Normally, students can move into this apartment after 3-5 months after registering. Private housings with comparatively high price are also available near campus. - The meals in the Campus cafeteria cost around 4,500 Korean Won per meal. - Medical insurance fee of approximately 50,000 Korean Won/month and KAIST student health insurance fee of 40,000 won/semester should be paid by students. 3. Qualification for Application Applicants: - must have graduated from a 4-year academic institution (or equivalent by the time) and have BA (Bachelor of Arts) or equivalent degree. - must be recommended by National RCA Representative of his/her country by asking the Representative to notify the candidate name by email to Ms. Juyeong Park, program coordinator at juyeong@kaist.ac.kr or by fax to +82-42-350-8516. - can find further information about his/her country s Representative at http://www.rcaro.org/. 4. Application Documents Application forms can be downloaded from the KAIST admission website. (http://admission.kaist.ac.kr). Applicants are recommended to frequently visit the KAIST admission website for being informed of further notices or your application status. 3

NOTE - For the forms and details, please visit http://admission.kaist.ac.kr - All documents must be official and original. The offer of admission may be revoked if a candidate's submitted documents are found to be false and counterfeit. Also faxes and photocopies are not considered as the valid application documents. However, photocopies of transcript with new fresh valid stamp are considered as original. - For degree and transcript, certified copy with apostille certificate (or Korean embassy certificate) is preferred, as it will expedite your achievement of visa after admission notice - All documents should be written in English officially so if application documents including academic transcript are written in a language other than English, they should be translated into English with the authorization of a public notary in your country. 5. How to apply - All applicants must apply online from March 19, 2019 ~ April 9, 2019, through http://admission.kaist.ac.kr/international/. After finishing online application, the application ID must be informed to Program coordinator (juyeong@kaist.ac.kr) so that admission fee can be paid by RCA program. Payment will be made only if recommendation letter from RCA NR is received. - Online application form should be printed and enclosed in the application package. - Applicants should send their application package directly to the Admission Office at KAIST, and application package should be arrived by the due date given below. For detailed information including address, please refer to the KAIST admission website (http://admission.kaist.ac.kr). The Admission Office shall only accept application documents that arrive at KAIST by due dates. They do not take any responsibility for a failure in delivery of application documents by the deadline. - Submitted documents will NOT be returned in any case. Please keep a copy of all application materials in case the materials get lost in the mail. 5

Admission Procedure and Coming to KAIST Screening at Department: May, 2019 - The Departmental Student Selection Committee (which includes the Program professor) at the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, KAIST will review all the applications submitted to the Admission Management Team of KAIST. Then, qualified applicants will be recommended to the Student Selection Committee of KAIST. If the number of qualified applicants is larger than the maximum number of students that the RCA-KAIST Master s Degree Program 6

can accept, some of applications can be transferred into the KAIST scholarship program. Admission Evaluation: June, 2019 - Applications recommended by the Departmental Student Selection Committee will be evaluated by the KAIST Student Selection Committee. Admission Notification: June 21, 2019 - Admissions results will be posted on the KAIST admission website (http://admission.kaist.ac.kr) along with registration instructions. The program coordinator also will contact admitted applicants for further instructions by e- mail. VISA and Air Ticket Process: July, 2019 - The admitted students should get his/her Visa from Korea Consulate in his/her countries. ISSS will give you guidance for Visa issuance, - Economy-class one-way ticket under 800 USD from originating country to Incheon international airport will be provided. Program coordinator will contact you for this information when the admission result is announced. Arrival at KAIST: August 28 ~ 30, 2019 - When the students arrive at Incheon airport, they should take an Airport Limousine Bus to Daejeon at Plat form 9D in the airport. (< 35,000 won) and tell the driver you will get off at the former Lotte Hotel bus-stop or Government Complex bus-stop in Daejeon (06:00 AM~23:30 PM). - When the students arrive at Daejeon, get off at bus-stop and take a taxi to KAIST (< 6,000 won). Tell the driver your dormitory name and building number to get to your dormitory. Information on dormitory will be provided in advance by KAIST International Office (KAIST IO) with admission notification. Settlement on Campus: August, 2019 - KAIST IO will help you for settlement in KAIST (making a bank account, the alien registration card, the computer account and the residence card etc.). For more information, please visit KAIST IO website at https://io.kaist.ac.kr/ - Report your arrival to the Program Coordinator, Ms. Juyeong Park by visiting Room 6101 of N21 building for further instruction on RCA-KAIST Program. - Students are encouraged to meet many professors of interests and should determine his/her academic advisor with the agreement of the professor he/she 7

chose and then his/her studying desk will be assigned in the academic advisor s laboratory. Students should bring 3 passport-size photographs in order to make a photo ID and other necessary official documents without delay. Students are advised to bring warm clothes for the cold season, November to March, as well as some money (~ 1,500,000 Korean Won) for the initial set-up. Start of Semester: September 2, 2019 (Monday) - Fall semester 2019 starts on September 2, 2019. - The minimum credit unit per semester is 9 and the maximum is 12. - Students must satisfy the department and KAIST requirements for their graduation (You can refer to the NQE department website at http://nuclear.kaist.ac.kr). 7. Requirements for Graduation There are two options for MS degree track: Thesis-based MS degree - For graduation, students must obtain at least 33 credit units consisting of (1) 7 courses (7x3 = 21 units) with the average GPA score of 2.5 or higher and (2) a thesis research (12 units) for 2 years. If your BS major was not nuclear engineering, NQE502 Principles and Applications of Nuclear Engineering or NQE503 Radiation Science, Technology, and Applications is mandatory to attend. The minimum credit plan for graduation is as follows; Mandatory General (HSS 586 or CCxxx) 1 course 3 credit units CC020 1 course 0 credit units NQE Courses..4 courses 12 credit units Courses in any departments 2 courses 6 credit units Thesis research 12 credit units Total 33 credit units Course-based MS degree - This is an option to finish MS program without thesis research (12 units) but with 2 more courses (6 units) + and Independent Research (6 units). The student is supposed to finish MS degree within 3 semesters. For this option, however, 8

students must consult with his/her academic advisor during the first or second semester. 8.
