Senior School Educaional Program Model 1

Senior School Educaional Program As a universiy preparaory day school, Souhridge provides a simulaing, diverse academic Grade 8-12 program wih an enriched curriculum well beyond BC Minisry of Educaion guidelines. This challenging program of sudies is designed o prepare sudens for pos secondary school courses of sudy, while allowing hem o pursue heir individual passions and abiliies. A full range of academic elecives is inroduced in Grade 11. Sudens selec individual programs according o heir srenghs and preferences and are guided in heir decisions by he Universiy Guidance Counsellors and he Senior School Academic Program Direcor. The Souhridge academic program covers all prerequisies for sudies in he ars, sciences, engineering, business and foreign languages a universiies in Canada, he Unied Saes, and Europe. We also offer Advanced Placemen (College Board) courses and examinaions in several disciplines hrough which sudens earn universiy level course credis ha are recognized a schools around he world. We believe ha a suden s aiude o his or her sudies is also a vial componen of academic success and we foser independence and an innovaive, creaive approach in our sudens. We believe ha criical hinking and problem solving; communicaion and collaboraion are essenial skills ha will enable our sudens o fully realise heir poenial in he dynamic and consanly changing environmen of he 21s cenury. To his end we foser a suden-cenred, discussion based model of educaion, which is furher enriched by he judicious use of echnology. In many of our classrooms sudens are seaed in small groups or gahered around a large able, explaining a poin, seeking clarificaion from he eacher or heir peers, offering an opinion, challenging an assumpion, asking a key quesion we encourage sudens o become acive paricipans in heir own learning. While we srongly focus on building a sound knowledge base for our sudens, we are equally commied o nururing he developmen of sudens who are engaged wih each oher and he world around hem; sudens who are houghful, compassionae ciizens. The developmen of sound characer and personal inegriy is cenral o our educaional mandae, as i is in all areas of school life. Sound characer and inegriy guide he useful applicaion of knowledge in conribuing o communiy, which is one of Souhridge s guiding principles. Sudens who come o Souhridge are quick o embrace he simulaing amosphere generaed by a comprehensive educaional program in which academics, paricipaion in he ars and ahleics, service learning, oudoor educaion and experienial learning are all essenial componens of a carefully crafed program. Academic Program Overview

English The cenral purpose of our comprehensive English program is o develop skills of expression, boh wrien and oral, and o promoe lisening and undersanding. As sudens move hrough his program, heir learning will be differeniaed, primarily hrough heir encouners wih exs ha become increasingly complex and sophisicaed, as well as assignmens ha challenge hem o develop hese qualiies in heir own wriing. In every grade, sudens wrie in various forms and read works ha share common hemes, alhough hey represen diverse voices and experiences. In Grade 10 and Grade 12, an addiional focus is placed on preparaion for he English 10 and English 12 Provincial Examinaions. Throughou he English program, he learning process is also enriched by our use of echnology o bring he works of auhors ino our classrooms, from spoken word poes o ancien exs, and o creae opporuniies for expression, from blogs o elecronic presenaions and discussions. We also use he Acceleraed Reader Program o foser a love of reading in our sudens and we invie local auhors ino our classrooms o foser a love of wriing. To promoe he power of speech, he English Deparmen also hoss wo popular evens on he Souhridge calendar Debaing in December and Public Speaking Day in March. Finally, sudens who are prepared and ineresed in pursuing Advanced Placemen Courses have he opion of sudying AP English Language and Composiion and AP English Lieraure and Composiion. A mulidisciplinary approach is used o draw from he social sciences and humaniies o sudy human ineracions and naural and social environmens. Sudens are encouraged o become houghful, responsible, acive ciizens who are able o consider muliple perspecives and o make reasoned judgemens. Suden-cenred learning is encouraged hrough curren evens, group discussions and Harkness relaed mehodology. Sudens are frequenly given he opporuniy o work on research projecs wih peers, ofen on opics of heir own ineres. This opporuniy o consruc heir own knowledge base is ofen inegraed wih echnology, hrough he use of he inerne, PowerPoin, and oher web-based programs. Mahemaics The Minisry of Educaion has hree mahemaics pahways : Appreniceship and Workplace Mahemaics, Foundaions of Mahemaics, and Pre-Calculus Mahemaics. The goals of all hree pahways are o provide prerequisie aiudes, knowledge, skills and undersandings for specific pos-secondary programs or direc enry ino he work force. All hree pahways provide sudens wih mahemaical undersandings and criicalhinking skills. When choosing a pahway, sudens should consider heir ineress, boh curren and fuure. Sudens, parens and educaors are encouraged o research he admission requiremens for pos-secondary programs of sudy as hey vary by insiuion and by year. Please Noe: Souhridge School only offers courses in he Foundaions of Mahemaics and Pre-Calculus Mahemaics pahways as hese are he courses required for enrance o universiy programs. Pre-Calculus 12 leads o any of he hree highes level Calculus courses. Sciences Science a Souhridge is an ineracive experience. Sudens enjoy he benefis of laboraories cusom designed for each subjec area. This allows for specialized equipmen and specimen collecions. Through he process of experimenaion, sudens learn o hypohesize, design procedures, hink criically, communicae effecively, and analyze resuls. Specialy eachers make hese experiences more exciing by eaching he course componens which fall ino heir area of experise. Souhridge groups Science 8, 9 and 10 ino four courses of sudy: biology, chemisry, physics and earh science. Enrichmen occurs by eaching addiional AP opics or by expanding a given opic o challenge problem solving and criical hinking skills. The science faculy has formulaed an engaging and challenging program o capure he ineres and imaginaion of sudens so hey will see he value of science in heir everyday life and acquire he knowledge and skills for a successful universiy experience. Modern Languages The Modern Language Deparmen uses he communicaive-experienial approach o second language learning. In our classrooms we employ a variey of sraegies ranging from class roundable conversaions and group skis o individual lisening and wriing asks in order o develop he knowledge and skills required o communicae effecively in oher languages. Sudens also gain insighs and appreciaion for he many ways in which language can provide access o oher culures and world views. This aspec of he program is suppored by exposure o shor sories, novels and foreign films as well as field rips ha allow/enable sudens o immerse hemselves in local and inernaional ars and culinary evens. The program is enhanced by he success of our exchange programs, ha fosers srong relaionships beween our sudens and he sudens of El Limonar School in Spain and Collège François-de-Laval School in Québec Ciy. The French 10 class will cover French 10 and 11 and he Grade 11 class will follow he French 12 curriculum. Sudens who have compleed Spanish 10 successfully can coninue learning he language in an acceleraed Spanish 11/12 which covers boh curriculums. The opion o only complee Spanish 11 in ha year is also available. 8

Ars The Ars faculy has designed programs and experiences o encourage paricipaion by all sudens. Those who possess a unique visual, musical, or dramaic alen are given he careful direcion and exciing producion and performance opporuniies. All sudens are augh skills and approaches ha assis hem o overcome heir uncerainies and boos heir confidence and abiliy in he ars. Applied Skills Informaion Communicaion Technology The sudy of informaion and communicaions echnology (ICT) is increasingly imporan. Technological skills are becoming mandaory in he workplace and are a prerequisie for funcioning in he modern world. Sudens oday require he abiliy o reason and communicae, o solve problems, and o undersand and use ICT for a variey of purposes. Sudens also need opporuniies o develop he skills required for e-learning so hey are beer prepared o pursue fuure learning opporuniies. IT 8 is offered o all sudens o ensure a smooh ransiion ino he Senior School lapop program. Addiional IT skills are Inegraed ino he course curriculum hroughou Grades 8 10. Sudens in Grades 10 or 11 may ake ICTS 11, which focuses on informaion echnology lieracy, media developmen, inerne securiy, and inroducory programming. Sudens in Grades 11 or 12 may ake ICTP 12, which primarily focuses on learning compuer programming. In he ICTS 11 course, lieracy in he area of informaion and communicaions echnology is defined as he abiliy o obain and share knowledge hrough invesigaion, sudy, insrucion, and ransmission of informaion by means of digial media echnology. Since echnology is undergoing consan and rapid change, he ICTlierae person possesses he skills and abiliies o learn and operae curren echnology, and adaps o new echnologies developed o elecronically gaher, process, evaluae, synhesize, and share daa wih ohers. The benefis of learning how o program a compuer involve learning abou processes; abou how one is doing wha one is doing. In programming, he process of creaing a produc is ofen as imporan as he finished produc. A byproduc of learning o program is he developmen of creaive problem solving, roubleshooing, and analyical hinking skills. Physical Educaion In an effor o promoe a healhy lifesyle, he senior P.E. program combines progressive skill developmen wih personal finess enhancemen and evaluaion. Throughou Grades 8-10, he sudens focus on skill building in a variey of individual and eam spors, primarily hose spors which are a par of he school s compeiive ahleic program. There is considerable emphasis placed on developing and mainaining each individual s level of physical finess. As sudens reach he senior grades here is an increased focus on such opics as nuriional programs and raining principles. These sudens are also exposed o a variey of lifeime spors and leisure aciviies. The aim of HCE is o provide sudens wih he knowledge, skills and aiudes ha will assis hem in making informed decisions relaed o heir healh, heir educaion and heir fuure careers. HCE 8 and 9 builds on HCE K - 7 and provides a foundaion for Planning 10.
