Senior School Educaional Program As a universiy preparaory day school, Souhridge provides a simulaing, diverse academic Grade 8-12 program wih an enriched curriculum well beyond BC Minisry of Educaion guidelines. This challenging program of sudies is designed o prepare sudens for pos secondary school courses of sudy, while allowing hem o pursue heir individual passions and abiliies. A full range of academic elecives is inroduced in Grade 11. Sudens selec individual programs according o heir srenghs and preferences and are guided in heir decisions by he Universiy Guidance Counsellors and he Senior School Academic Program Direcor. The Souhridge academic program covers all prerequisies for sudies in he ars, sciences, engineering, business and foreign languages a universiies in Canada, he Unied Saes, and Europe. We also offer Advanced Placemen (College Board) courses and examinaions in several disciplines hrough which sudens earn universiy level course credis ha are recognized a schools around he world. We believe ha a suden s aiude o his or her sudies is also a vial componen of academic success and we foser independence and an innovaive, creaive approach in our sudens. English The cenral purpose of our comprehensive English program is o develop skills of expression, boh wrien and oral, and o promoe lisening and undersanding. As sudens move hrough his program, heir learning will be differeniaed, primarily hrough heir encouners wih exs ha become increasingly complex and sophisicaed, as well as assignmens ha challenge hem o develop hese qualiies in heir own wriing. In every grade, sudens wrie in various forms and read works ha share common hemes, alhough hey represen diverse voices and experiences. In Grade 10 and Grade 12, an addiional focus is placed on preparaion for he English 10 and English 12 Provincial Examinaions. Mahemaics The Minisry of Educaion has hree mahemaics pahways : Appreniceship and Workplace Mahemaics, Foundaions of Mahemaics, and Pre-Calculus Mahemaics. The goals of all hree pahways are o provide prerequisie aiudes, knowledge, skills and undersandings for specific pos-secondary programs or direc enry ino he work force. All hree pahways provide sudens wih mahemaical undersandings and criicalhinking skills. When choosing a pahway, sudens should consider heir ineress, boh curren and fuure. Sudens, parens and educaors are encouraged o research he admission requiremens for pos-secondary programs of sudy as hey vary by insiuion and by year. Modern Languages The Modern Language Deparmen uses he communicaive-experienial approach o second language learning. Applied Skills Informaion Communicaion Technology The sudy of informaion and communicaions echnology (ICT) is increasingly imporan. Technological skills are becoming mandaory in he workplace and are a prerequisie for funcioning in he modern world. Sudens oday require he abiliy o reason and communicae, o solve problems, and o undersand and use ICT for a variey of purposes. Sudens also need opporuniies o develop he skills required for e-learning so hey are beer prepared o pursue fuure learning opporuniies. IT 8 is offered o all sudens o ensure a smooh ransiion ino he Senior School lapop program. Addiional IT skills are Inegraed ino he course curriculum hroughou Grades 8 10. Sudens in Grades 10 or 11 may ake ICTS 11, which focuses on informaion echnology lieracy, media developmen, inerne securiy, and inroducory programming. Healh, Career Educaion and Planning Healh and Career Educaion is offered once per cycle o sudens in Grades 9 and wice per cycle o sudens in Grade 8. The aim of HCE is o provide sudens wih he knowledge, skills and aiudes ha will assis hem in making informed decisions relaed o heir healh, heir educaion and heir fuure careers. HCE 8 and 9 builds on HCE K - 7 and provides a foundaion for Planning 10. The provincially prescribed learning oucomes for HCE 8 and 9 are grouped under wo broad organizers: Educaion and Careers Healh The focus in Grade 11 (he second half of planning 10) a Souhridge School is on universiy exploraion planning and relaed opics, as well as career exploraion and meeing Graduaion Transiions Program requiremens. In Grade 12, sudens focus on decision making, applying o, ransiion o and seeking funding for universiy. Leadership Experience Week Each Ocober, all Senior School sudens are immersed in he real world so ha hey come o a beer undersanding of who hey are and wha heir conribuion o he world can be. Specifically, each grade explores a differen heme in a differen forma: Grade 8 Ideniy: hrough challenging hemselves a Srahcona Park Lodge, sudens furher enhance heir personal characer, focus on selfleadership and develop heir grade ideniy. Grade 9 Cooperaion: by focusing on specific small group challenges a Srahcona Park Lodge, sudens build peer leadership skills, eamwork, and furher develop grade cohesion. Oudoor Educaion Oudoor Educaion is an imporan par of a Souhridge suden s experience. While paricipaing in he Oudoor Educaion (OE) program in he Senior School, sudens srenghen heir appreciaion for and undersanding of he naural environmen of Briish Columbia. Sudens also develop he skills and aiudes ha suppor good characer developmen. Leadership, eamwork and inerpersonal skills are developed during OE rips as sudens are challenged, comfor levels are exended and confidence is buil. Many differen opporuniies awai Souhridge sudens. All Grade 8 and 9 sudens ravel o Srahcona Park Lodge Oudoor Educaion Cenre on Vancouver Island for five nighs each fall. In addiion, he OE programme runs differen rips hroughou he year ha challenge sudens a differen levels and allows sudens o develop heir skills hroughou heir ime a Souhridge. Mos recenly, hese rips have included hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, ocean-kayaking and cycling, ranging in lengh from a one-day experience o a four-day expediion. Grade 11 Leadership I: Exploraion - sudens explore fuure opions a a Career Day and visi a real world work place on Career Experience Day. Overview For Grades 8 o 10 In Grades 8 hrough 10, sudens are required o ake a range of mandaory academic classes. As a graduaion requiremen, all sudens wrie provincial examinaions in Mahemaics 10, Science 10 and English 10, and hese examinaions represen 20% of heir final course marks. Souhridge has esablished a very srong record in successfully preparing sudens for hese examinaions. The use of echnology is fully inegraed ino our curriculum and all sudens a Souhridge Senior School are equipped wih heir own personal lapop compuer. This ool is used o faciliae and expand opporuniies for collaboraion, exploraion and inquiry; auhenic assessmen and evaluaion, and o faciliae our abiliy o mee he diverse learning needs of our sudens.
