1 Stop & Reed August 2018 San Joaquin Valley Chapter American Guild of Organists a Member Organization of the Valley Cultural Coalition From the Dean What an honor it is to be the new dean for our AGO chapter! I remember less than a decade ago when I was brought into the fold of the SJVAGO and attended my first event at Warnors Theatre. I'll never forget being a college freshman, riding the Fresno FAX downtown, walking into the art deco movie palace, and hearing Richard Cencibaugh play away on the organ. I immediately found a community in our chapter that was willing to mentor me into the organ world, and for that I am extremely grateful! Now I am happy to give back and lead this group. The board met this summer and planned another exciting year with a little something for everyone. Be sure that all of your contact information is current so you can get the latest! I hope to see everyone at our September social as we gather to share summer stories and look at the year ahead! Roberts Ave., Fresno Please note the starting time is now 10:30 AM Editor s Comments Allegretto ma non troppo Well friends, after a four year hiatus from this column, the editor s comments seem to be back. I have to admit that I missed writing this feature, but other duties prevailed and it was put aside. Now, the other tasks have been handed off to our new Dean, Cactus Harris, so, here I am, ready to go again! There are a couple of features that will be coming back. The first is Organs and Organists, where we are introduced to the organists of our chapter and the instruments that they play. I am thinking about expanding this to include instruments and organists from outside the San Joaquin Valley. There are several organists that I know and they play some pretty incredible instruments. So, let s get to meet them. If you know any organists who you think would be interesting to showcase, either call or email me. The second feature that I would like to bring back is the Favorite Composer s Corner. This column might require some pondering about not only who, but why the composer is your favorite. Again, if you choose to submit an article it doesn t have to be a dissertation length submission. As Sgt. Joe Friday used to say, Just the facts, ma m. And if you know who Joe Friday is well, you have a few miles under your tires. The Stop & Reed is our newsletter. That being the case, please feel free to contribute to it, or give me ideas for things you would like to see included. I will leave with a quote to think on as we go about our musical endeavors. The test of the artist does not lie in the will with which he goes to work but in the excellence of the work he produces. Thomas Aquinas. Blessings to all as we seek to produce excellence in our musical art. With that, I am off to spend some time practicing. Blessings always, Michael Varlas
