PRINCIPAL S PERSONAL MESSAGE Successful Parent Group Meeting I would like to thank those parents who attended our first parent group meeting on Wednesday afternoon. They agreed to meet twice a term on Wednesday afternoons starting at 6 pm. The next meeting will be Wednesday 3 rd May (the second Wednesday of next term). It will be a formal AGM to vote in this year s P&C. Year 11 & 12 Parent support We realise that for many parents of students in Year 11 & 12, that these years can be just as stressful as they can be for the students. As part of our CHS wellbeing focus we would like to offer afternoon seminars to parents on how to support students in Years 11 & 12. This will be useful for first timers as well as old hands to these years. If you are interested, please contact the school by email or phone so we can gauge possible numbers. SUPPORT UNIT ORANGE CLASS In the Orange class we encourage the students to improve their social skills at all opportunities. Card games are a perfect example as it promotes these skills in a fun and interactive way. The students in Orange class are enjoying a unit of work on Body Systems in Science. Recently we went to the science laboratory to complete an animal heart dissection. Each participant was eager to discover and get a hands-on experience as to how the heart functions. Mr Tier LIME CLASS The Support Unit welcomes a new fish tank in Lime Class. Students have been feeding the fish, testing PH levels and conducting General Hardness of water tests. Mr Luskan MUSIC Our Harmony Day Assembly provided a wonderful performance opportunity for our Big Band and Year 9/10 Elective Music Class. They performed excellent musical items and their contribution to the event was highly valued. The event opened with Land Down Under performed by the Year 9/10 Elective Music students. Special mention to Rangiuira Waremaki for his exceptional drumming which had our DP s running backstage to congratulate him on his performance after the show. The event was closed with a special performance of I Am Australian by our Big Band. Again the performance was supported with the crowd clapping and singing along in the chorus. The event was a success and the musical items contributed to what Harmony Day truly represents. Well done to all the students who performed. 3 P a g e Mr Heugh Music Teacher
SUPPORT UNIT Support Unit class participating in a Gymnastics unit. An excellent display of agility and hard work for all students involved. AQUA CLASS Our Special Education Unit is trialling a Girls Class this year. This has been an exciting time for the girls who have usually been the only girl in their class. There has been great feedback so far this term ad we are looking forward to what the year will bring for them. Mrs Hughes Once again the Mathematics department is running the Australian Mathematics Competition this year. Entries are open now and until the end of first term. All students are encouraged to enter but especially those students in motivation/top classes. The standard entry fee is $6.50, however, Corrimal High School is subsidising the cost so that each student may enter for a mere $3. All money should be paid to the student s Mathematics teacher. This is a valuable learning experience and students will receive a certificate and detailed information about their performance in different strands. Employers look favourably on these extra activities that students involve themselves in while attending high school. AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION Mrs Groves Head Teacher Mathematics 4 P a g e
