RFRI Celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity-2015 Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat (Assam) has celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity-2015 at Kakojan Boys Higher Secondary School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) on 26 th May, 2015 in a day-long programme in which around 350 students from 15 schools of attended. This year s theme is Biodiversity for Sustainable Development that reflects the importance of efforts made at all levels to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development. The celebration was kicked off with ceremonial plantation of saplings at the premises of the school by Sri Suren Saikia, Principal, Kakojan Boys Higher Secondary School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam). Scientists and staff members of RFRI, teachers and students participated in the plantation programme. Sri R. K. Kalita, Scientist & Head, Forestry Extension Division conducted the plantation programme. Coinciding the occasion, a Science Exhibition on Diversity was organized for the students and other public. Wide ranges of exhibits were displayed. Posters, banners, live specimen, demonstration of Noni products, seedlings of important species such as bamboo, Noni, fruit plants etc were displayed and distributed. Overwhelming response was received from the students. Various competitions were held among students coming from fifteen schools of Jorhat and also outside Jorhat district. Extempore speech competition was held amongst the students coming from various schools. The competition was conducted in two categories: Junior Level

from VI to VIII and Senior Level from IX to X. Around 60 students took part in the competition. Three best students in each category were awarded prizes for their deep subject knowledge and lucid presentation. A total of nineteen teams participated in the qualifying round, out of which six teams were selected for final contest. A budding Quiz Master of Kakojan, Mr. Amarjyoti Saikia conducted the Quiz competition. More than hundred students participated in the Competition. Three best students in each category were awarded prizes. A Slogan Competition was also organized among the students. More than hundred slogans were received in two categories. Three best students in each category were awarded prizes for their Slogans. Junior Level 1 st Sri Ridip Hazarika Class VII 2 nd Ms. Urmi Borah Class VII 3 rd Ms. Nirmali Lahkar Class VIII Jawaharlal Nehru High School, Komar Khatowal, Jorhat (Assam) Jawaharlal Nehru High School, Komar Khatowal, Jorhat (Assam) Kakojan Girls High School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) Senior Level 1 st Sri Udipta Borah Class X 2 nd Ms. Anamika Borah Class X 3 rd Ms. Gitashree Hazarika Class IX Kakojan Boys Higher Secondary School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) Kakojan Girls High School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) Kakojan Girls High School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) Light refreshment was served to all the students, teachers, staff members of RFRI and others. A Open Session was organized which was graced by Sri Suren Saikia, Principal, Kakojan Boys Higher Secondary School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam). He welcomed all the teachers, students, scientists and staffs of RFRI and other invited guests. Dr. D. Dutta, Scientist, RFRI spoke about the objective of organizing the Open Session on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity at this School.

Dr. P. Hazarika of RFRI delivered an informative talk through power point presentation on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development. He explained the basics of biodiversity, causes of its destruction and role of human being, particularly young generation, for is conservation for future use. Dr. R. K. Borah, Group Coordinator, Research, RFRI, Jorhat addressed the students and teachers and urged them to pay much needed attention towards the protection of biodiversity resources around us. He expressed his concern over the dwindling of valuable natural resources due to over exploitation by human being. Prizes were distributed among the winners of various competitions in the Open Session. Sri Jiten Bora, Vice Principal, Kakojan Boys Higher Secondary School, Kakojan, Jorhat (Assam) offered formal vote of thanks. Sri R. K. Kalita, Scientist and Head, Forestry Extension Division, RFRI conducted the open session and thanked all for their active support and overwhelming response.
