CURRENT STATUS AND SCOPE OF TOURISM IN HARYANA INTRODUCTION VIVEK* AMIT** HASHU PRIYA*** *Dept. of IHTM, M.D. University, Rohtak, Haryana, India **Dept. of IHTM, M.D. University, Rohtak, Haryana, India ***Dept. of IHTM, M.D. University, Rohtak, Haryana, India The small state of Haryana, spread over an area of over 44,000 square kilometers, was founded in 1966 when the former state of Punjab was divided into Haryana and the modern Punjab. It is both the oldest and most modern of places. Most of tourists who come to India pass through Haryana, the state that surrounds Delhi on three sides, the capital of the country, and whose highways lead to Agra, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. As they drive through, tourists are treated to the view of neat and abundant green fields, and a growing number of modern residential complexes and industrial townships. For those who want to relax for some time during the journey, there are numerous roadside resorts with which the state government has dotted all the major highways. However, there is much more to discover and enjoy in the state of Haryana. Haryana, literary means the 'Abode of God' is one of the most beautiful, richest and most prosperous states of India. Nestled between the Indian Capital Delhi and northern state Punjab, Haryana is one of the most visiting places of India because of its historic significance, natural beauty, monuments, heritage sites and religious importance. Haryana's two districts Panipat and Kurukshetra are the witnesses of India's four most terrifying wars (three historical wars of Panipat and one mythological war of Mahabharata), which made significant changes in India's history. Both these places are worth to visit. Geographically, Haryana is a beautiful state comprised of Yamuna-Ghaggar plain, Shivalik hills and Aravali hills, and Semi-desert sandy plain. The awesome landscapes, amazing high hills, deep valleys, beautiful lakes, marvelous forests, and long stretched eye-soothing green farmlands vigorously attract the attentions of the visitors and makes this land a must visit site. The man made architectures, monuments, heritage sites, muddy houses, simple and, green farmlands enhance the splendor of this state. Haryana Tourism department has developed 44-tourist complex in the entire state of the state were promoted widely based on the view of highway 127

tourism. Along the National Highways that pass through the state tourist stops are arranged to outfit the needs of travelers. Dabar-Bapora a renowned holy place 10km from Bhiwani on Tosham road is also the speciality of Haryana. The presence of Sufi's and the people who practices Ayurveda makes this place a peaceful one. Dabar Bapura that spreads about 50 acres is the habitat of a variety of Wild animals like rabbit, parrot, peacock, sanbhar and so on. Along with these their exits a number of temples that gives the place a holy atmosphere. As a part of tourism development the state also provides 2 Golf Courses. The Aravalli Golf Course at Faridabad and The High Way Golf Course near Karnal Lake at the National Highway 1. Surajkund Crafts Mela, held every year between February 1 and 15 at Faridabad near Delhi is also an attraction of equipped with world-class facilities. Come and enjoy the incredible beauty of Haryana. The Tourism Corporation of India with authorization started its operation with only one resort in 1966 but in the future this was upgraded to 44 complexes which provides the tourist accommodation, food, exciting journeys, farm tourism and entertainment activities. Wineaster Anderson (2013) in her research paper entitled leakage the tourism system a cost study of Zanzibar examines the leakages in tourism system. The study seeks to trace the distribution channel of the tourist arriving in Zanzibar from generating market. The study was based on primary source. For this purpose 150 resorts were interviewed. The findings reveal massive internal and external leakages that only 16 percent of resorts requirements were sourced within Zanzibar. Most resorts in Zanzibar owned, managed and operated by non-locals. Tourism in this archipelago is revolving around the beach products, where by the direct charters inclusive tourists mainly from Europe dictate the tourism channels. Nevertheless no. of tourists by prearrangement tours Zanzibar as an add own to their mainland Tanjania Safaris. Anukrati Sharma (2012) conducted a study with Title Haryana tourism-painted in different canvas. The main objectives of the study were to highlight the innovation of 129

Haryana tourism and explain the highway tourism. Furthermore the study also focused on open golf tourism, pilgrim tourism and adventure tourism. Problem Travel & Tourism is an important economic activity in most countries around the world. As well as its direct economic impact, the industry has significant indirect and induced impacts. WTTC recognizes that Travel & Tourism's total contribution is much greater, and aims to capture its indirect and induced impacts through its annual research. Travel & Tourism s importance to the wider economy continued to grow in 2012. Its total contribution comprised 9% of global GDP (US $6.6 trillion) and generated over 260 million jobs 1 in 11 of the world s total jobs. The industry outperformed the entire wider economy in 2012, growing faster than other notable industries such as manufacturing, financial services and retail. The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP of India was INR1,919.7billione (2.0% of total GDP) in2012, and is forecast to rise by 7.0% in 2013, and to rise by 7.8% pa, from 2013-2023, toinr4,360.6bllione in 2023 (in constant 2012 prices). The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP of India was INR6,385.1bllione (6.6% of GDP) in 2012,and is forecast to rise by 7.3% in 2013, and to rise by 7.9% pa to INR14,722.3bllione in 2023. Besides the best efforts from the ministry and state tourism boards the state has not able to woo the number of tourists as per its potentiality. The present paper deals with the available tourist resources and in their use pattern, the marketing strategy for its existing resources and also identifying the untapped resources so that tourist must have plethora of products to taste. Need of the Study Tourism is the largest business format of the world. It contributes almost 9.3% to global GDP. Economists estimated that this industry will gain many more in near future. Tourism in a state like Haryana, which is well known for its healthy historical background and its pure and traditional food, keeps more importance. If we compare tourism share in GDP we find that Haryana is down than his neighbor states i.e. Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand and Himachal. So let the tourism get importance and take some serious attention. Also we should think that how can we improve the tourism in our state. 130

Keeping the above discussion in the view, an attempt has been made in this research project for examining the scope in Haryana and also highlighting its future scope. Objectives To measure the current status of tourism in Haryana To investigate the scope of Haryana tourism To formulate the strategy to promote tourism in Haryana To identify the untouched potential of Haryana Tourism Focus of Research However the study mainly forecasted on present status of Haryana tourism, its scope in future, and how to improve a better future of Haryana tourism Research Methodology The basic aim of the present study is to examine the present status of Haryana tourism and future scope of it. All the major turns were happened on the land of Haryana. It has played a major role in historical and political stability of India. It was over the decades that Haryana was known as the place of Milk and Milk products. But now the scenario has been changed. In the present time Haryana caters the need of tourist in different ways like Highway Tourism, Education tourism, Medical tourism, Business Tourism, Religious Tourism, Agri and Farm tourism and many more. Now we can say that we have all resources that is required for any popular tourist destination to attract tourist. What we have to do is just to go for awareness of all existing and dashing tourist products so that we can on higher positions in terms of revenue generation and per capita income. But before going for the development of overall tourism in the state it is worthwhile to go for the following suggestions and recommendations: 1. Tourism institutes can play a pivotal role in the development the tourism in the state. The institutes should come up with new courses in tourism so that students should be attracted and they should be trained in such a way that they should become the part of the Haryana tourism either by placing inside or through entrepreneurs. Also the institutes should focus on researches in tourism so that a model should be developed for tourism development in the state. 2. Haryana government as well as Central government should need to look up towards the heritage sites and should renovate them for long term. It will give employment to the locals in the form of Guides and other interpreters. 137

3. Haryana state has a vast potential of attracting Hindu pilgrims from all over the world. Due to the place of Holi Geeta and other oldest religious congregations, the place Kurukshetra has carved out a place for himself in Indian mythology. The state should come up with more religious sites so that it can be mingled with other destinations. 4. Golf tourism is an upcoming event in the state so it needs a lot of marketing campaign. We can attract a large number of youths for this type of tourism. 5. Farm tourism is an emerging tourism concept. It was the first state sate in India which introduced the concept of Farm tourism some 20 years back. But besides increasing its shape, it went on degrading day by day. The Delhi and adjoining areas can be a potential target market for the same. The government should come forward for identification and approval of such projects. This will strengthen the economic status of the formers and will create an employment opportunity to the locals. Also the government should promote such farm tourism through their official websites.
