Mathematics department Welcme letter and curse utline Year 6 2015--2016 Dear parents, Y6 I wuld like t welcme yu all t ur new academic year, kindly take a few mments t read the cntents f this letter. Curse text bk and Descriptin: New Heinemann Maths 6 ffers a cmplete numeracy curriculum that is bth flexible and practical. It presents a clear prgressin and cntinuity f tpics, which makes it easy-t-use and fllw fr pupils, teachers and parents alike. NHM incrprates the develpment f mental math skills, prblem slving and strategies as well as activities, which cater t different ability levels. NHM practices functinal maths skills by prviding prblem slving activities in real life settings. Curse Objectives: By the end f this curse, students shuld: Acquire imprved mental math & prblem slving skills fr additin, subtractin, multiplicatin and divisin. Understand number prperties including time, weight, area, vlume and capacity. Be acquainted with the fundamental cncepts f 2D and 3D shapes and their areas and vlumes respectively. Be familiar with fractins, decimals, percentages and their cnversins. Be able t interpret analyse and graph data. Be able t make sense f a prblem, knw hw t present it, analyse and interpret and cmmunicate the results. Curse utline: 1. Advanced additin, subtractin, multiplicatin and divisin strategies. 2. Cmparing and rdering numbers 3. Number sequences 4. Number types (factrs, primes) 5. Place value 6. Decimals and fractins and cnverting between them 7. Mney handling 8. Measures: time, length, weight, area, vlume and capacity 9. Intrductin f mixed measures (metric/ imperial) 10. 2D and 3D shapes. 11. Psitin mvement and angles. 12. Crdinates, rtatin, transfrmatin and reflectin f crdinates and shapes. 13. Data handling; Mean median, mde etc..., and data representatins; pie charts, bar charts, tallying etc...

Curse Requirements (What I expect frm my students): Be respnsible and ask all the questins needed t help them understand the tpics taught. Be keen n their duties as students, such as submitting hme wrk n time, Class cleanliness, In Class gd behaviur and attitude Be aware f the cnsequences f nt fulfilling their duties as students. Wrk hard all year rund and make sure they are always ding their best with hnesty and integrity Hmewrk and Classwrk plicy: The teacher will grade all hmewrk and practice sheets. Hmewrk sheets shuld be answered n the sheet itself if space is available r n A4 lined paper which shuld then be stapled t the questin sheet. The hmewrk sheet will be graded ut f 10 5: punctuality 3: cntent 2: neatness Nte: hmewrk will nt be accepted after the final dead line (One chance fr late H.W) The classwrk will be graded as fllws 5 Cmpletin f wrk 3 Neatness and presentatin 2 Accuracy Once marked sheets have been returned t yu, please place them in a plastic wallet and keep them in yur binder. Extra practice sheets, tests and quizzes shuld all be kept in yur binder. Yur Maths binder shuld be labelled with yur full name, year and class and be kept in yu lcker. I will check yur binders at randm and check yur wrk s please keep them up t date. Parents shuld please sign ALL tests and quizzes. Curse grading: At EBIS, The year is divided int tw terms. During thse terms, we will have tests and quizzes. Tests will be annunced befrehand, quizzes annunced r pp. After each term, there will be a term exam. Befre the exam, the students will have a revisin. At the end, the student will be given his/her grade accrding t the fllwing areas f wrk: Term Test Quizzes Prjects and H.W Class wrk Participatin Behaviur Effrt 2

The actual grading scres are in the students pride guides. Checkpint examinatin: Year 6 students will have their Cambridge checkpint examinatins at the end f the academic April 2016, year This examinatin is t prepare them fr the system f Cambridge assessments. Cambridge grades will nt be included in ur reprt cards. They will be supplied by Cambridge n a separate reprt. Thank yu fr yur time 3
