Ohio North Board of Directors Meeting Minutes July 28, 2015 Ohio North Office Paul Emhoff called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. A quorum was present and acting throughout the entire meeting. Present: Paul Emhoff, David Ehlert (phone), Ron Gedrich, Scott MacMillan (phone), Tom Pickett, Peter Kennedy, Paul Holdgate (phone), Tom Turner, and Bob Riggs Excused: Pat Cingel Absent: Brian Miller and Tom Chapman Minutes of the May 26 meeting were approved without objection. Treasurer Report - Gedrich reported positive cash flow even though program revenue down from previous year. Director Reports: Executive Director - Written report submitted by Riggs. Director of Coaching Turner reported on ODP updates and US Soccer player development initiatives regarding implementation of 1) standards chart for number of players for each age group and 2) calendar birth years as best practices in 2016-17 and as mandate in 2017-18 for all Member Organizations. Committee Reports: SYRA No report State League Pickett reported 123 teams currently declared with league declarations closing tomorrow. Last year had 174 teams playing in the league. State League meeting scheduled for Toledo and Cleveland area to discuss proposals for changes. President Report Emhoff reported on National Council meeting held in Tulsa, Oklahoma o State associations discussed US Soccer Player Development Initiatives for playing sizes and birth ages. o US Youth Soccer Elections: Tim Turney (Kentucky) was elected as Vice Chair and Peter Mariahazy (Wisconsin) was elected as Treasurer. o Emhoff met with Alex Para, President and CEO of US Futsal, about sanctioning and tournaments. o The class action lawsuit regarding concussions naming FIFA, the United States Soccer Federation, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, US Club Soccer, and the California Youth Soccer Association as defendants has been dropped. o o Emhoff met with staff regarding loss of teams to competitors the need to develop new members. Discussion was held on what Ohio North offers as member benefits. Suggestions include reconnecting to recreational leagues, creating a welcome wagon packet for new members, providing a member booklet, and more person-to-person phone calls and visits. Emhoff, Turner, and Riggs to prepare plan for annual planning meeting (which will be rescheduled August 16 to date in September). Unfinished Business - None New Business US Youth Soccer Member Pass Card Stock Motion by David Ehlert, second by Ron Gedrich to require all player and coach member passes be printed on US Youth Soccer card stock. Approved unanimously. Positive Coaching Alliance Clinics PCA will conduct five clinics over the next year. District commissioners will review calendars and suggest dates and locations. Coaching Licenses for Assistant Coaches Removed from agenda Member Services/Benefits of Membership Previously discussed. US Soccer Player Development Initiatives Previously discussed. Nominations for US Youth Soccer annual awards are due to the Region II office by October 16. Staff will send information to the leagues about those awards, Ohio North awards, and Hall of Fame nominations with tdeadlines for receipt in the Ohio North office in order to prepare for the Ohio North events on November 6-7. Motion by Scott MacMillan, second by Ron Gedrich, to create a District Commissioner Award for each district with a State winner to be announced at the Ohio North Annual Awards. Approved unanimously. Board of Directors Meeting Executive Director Report June 30, 2015 State Cup wrapped up at Pacesetter Park (May 30-31), Copley Soccer Complex (June2-4), and Ehrnfelt Soccer Complex (June 6-7). Using TeamApp, particularly during the rain delays, proved to be effective in communications with teams as 1,200 new users downloaded the app and added the Ohio North State Cup link. On May 30, Emhoff and Riggs met with Kerry Mackey and discussed TOPSoccer program development in Ohio North. The five-year agreement with Nationwide as the Official Insurance Provider for Ohio North is effective July 1, 2015. Peter Abreo will set up a phone conference in July with Riggs and Jessica Chambers to introduce the Nationwide team who will work with the office. Brett Stewart - Relationship Manager (Brett will be the main point of contact moving forward and will handle the relationship between Nationwide and ONYSA) Paul Dormas - Specialist Affinity Program Management (Paul works closely with Brett, to help coordinate marketing, reporting and other partner issues and needs) Cristina Johnson - Marketing Consultant (Cristina will take the lead to work closely with Ohio North and the Nationwide Relationship Management Team to jointly develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan, based on the communications and marketing access in the agreement). Emhoff and Riggs attend the Region II Presidents Cup in St. Louis, Missouri on June 11-14. Ohio North represented well by the U15B Twinsburg Tigers and U13G Soccer Vision Academy. Both teams played hard and with class. These clubs as well as other clubs have already expressed an interest in qualifying for next year s event. Emhoff and Riggs attended the Midwest Regionals in Fox Cities (Appleton and DePere), Wisconsin. The U15G Cleveland FC, U17G Ambassadors, and the U 19G Cleveland United teams advanced to the semi-finals with Cleveland FC and Cleveland United teams making it to the championship games (which were streamed live on the US Youth Soccer website) and finishing as finalists. Emhoff and Riggs will attend the Region II and National Council meetings on July 24-25 held in conjunction with the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Page 3
The Ohio North Board of Directors annual planning meeting is currently scheduled for Sunday, August 16. The office staff is working with Affinity to edit and update forms and information related to registration, billing, event rosters, and travel notification. When completed, the website will be updated and members will be notified of the updated information. Preparations for the Bothwell Cup (October 17-18 in Plain Township) are underway, beginning with some revisions of the rules, in order to publicize the event as soon as possible and increase the number of teams from last year. Emhoff and Riggs will attend the Region II meetings on October 23-25 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The La Centre Conference and Banquet Facility in Westlake will be the venue for the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner (Friday, November 7), the Annual General Meeting (Saturday, November 8) and the Awards Luncheon (Saturday, November 8). Board of Directors Meeting Executive Director Report July 28, 2015 On July 2, Riggs and Chambers met via phone conference with the Nationwide team who will work with the office. On July 13, the Nationwide team met with Riggs and Chambers at the Ohio North office to discuss marketing plan. An agreement has been reached with Blue Technologies to replace the current copier with a newer and faster copier at a lower lease amount and lower usage fees. Proposals in process to use 1) Time Warner as the Internet vendor, pending that the construction costs for Time Warner are not too high for it to install in the building complex, or 2) AT&T Fiber Optics which can now be installed in the building. On July 16, Emhoff, Riggs, and Chambers attended La Centre s Conference & Banquet Facility Customer Appreciation Lunch to sample food and discuss November events. On July 24-26, Emhoff and Riggs attended the US Youth Soccer Region II and National Council meetings held in conjunction with the US Youth Soccer National Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Discussion held on concussion lawsuit, U.S. Soccer Player Development Initiatives, Soccer Across America Region II Symposium, Region II administration, Midwest Regionals, bylaw amendments, and US Youth assistance to State Associations as related to growth, branding, data mining, and best practices.
