What is the IIA about? Our Mission Encompasses: Advocating and promoting the value internal audit professionals add to their organizations. Providing comprehensive professional, educational and development opportunities; standards and other professional practice guidance, and certification programs. Researching, disseminating, and promoting knowledge concerning internal auditing and its appropriate role in control, risk management, and governance to practitioners and stakeholders. Educating practitioners and other relevant audiences on best practices in internal auditing. Bringing together internal auditors from all countries to share information and experiences. Feedback Questions about any of the topics in the letter? Have a story that you would like to feature? Need a point person within our Chapter? Contact us at foxvalley.centralwi.iia@gmail.com Melissa Simonis President Matt Rotter First Vice President Ben Shepherd Second Vice President and EMT Administrator Cara Newman Secretary Tim Peterson Treasurer Recap: Academic Relations Student Night Submitted by Ryan Streicher On April 11, our chapter and Associated Bank delivered a joint presentation to approximately 40 students from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Accounting and Finance Clubs. Highlights of the presentation included discussing what internal auditors do, how to become an internal auditor and what students can do while in college to prepare for a career or internship in internal audit. The presentation was followed by networking with students and facility with the goal of reinforcing the IIA s presence in colleagues throughout our chapter s footprint. If you would like to assist with planning an event or attend a student night event on behalf of our chapter, feel free to send me an email (Ryan.Streicher@associatedbank.com) noting which colleges you would be interested in attending and I will reach out when an opportunity arises. 6

IIA Leadership Academy Submitted by Melissa Simonis LEADERS TAKE ALL was the game show-like theme of the 2018 IIA Leadership Academy held April 15-17 in Orlando, Florida. Matt Rotter, 1st Vice President-elect and Melissa Simonis, President-elect attended this year to learn about building a better Chapter, IIA best practices, strengthening leadership skills and networking with other IIA leaders. The conference included an engaging keynote speaker, author Justin Jones-Fosu, sharing his perspective on The 4 Traits of High Impact Leaders. At the close of the event, Justin encouraged and motivated all of us to re-energize our leadership passion by reflecting on our WHY WHY did you get involved? - WHY do you volunteer? WHY is the IIA, the Chapter or Internal Auditing important to you? What s your WHY, or WHY NOT? If you are interested in being a volunteer leader for the chapter, please contact Melissa.Simonis@sentry.com. Young Professionals Committee It is with great pleasure that we announce a new committee as part of our chapter the IIA Young Professionals Committee. This is part of a cross country effort by the IIA to help recruit and encourage young professionals to consider audit as a desired career choice. Our chapter is proud to participate in this great opportunity and we will be sharing more information about ways you can be involved in the months to come. Questions on this topic can be sent to: foxvalley.centralwi.iia@gmail.com 7

Tell Us Your Story Dr. Jennifer Jordan is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Jennifer has been an Internal Auditor for four years and her background includes experience in the Public Health, Health Care, and Environmental Health and Safety fields. Her experience working with state and federal regulations has helped Jennifer to grow in her position. Jennifer s future auditing plan includes securing the Certified Professional Environmental Auditor specialty certification from the IIA. Jennifer joined the Fox Valley Chapter Board in April, 2018 and is the current editor of the Chapter Cheddar Letter. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her five year old daughter Xiomara and Bichon Honey. She also enjoys beading, attending pow wows and Green Bay Packer games. Board Member Bios In this segment of Board Member Bios, we showcase our very own chapter board members as well as their audit experiences, career growth, and pearls of wisdom. This month, it is with great pleasure that we present to you Jennifer Jordan and Travis Wouters. Photo submitted by Jennifer Jordan 10

Tell Us Your Story Continued... Travis Wouters is a Consultant in Risk Advisory Services with Wipfli, LLP, and an IT consultant for 15 years prior to joining the IT examination group. Over the past 4 years performing risk-based general IT controls audits, Travis has added Service Organization Controls (SOC) and HITRUST testing in addition to attest security services such as vulnerability assessment and social engineering. When not working, Travis enjoys time with his wife Sara, and 10 year old daughter Ella. Photo submitted by Travis Wouters Looking to Network? Take some time to get to know your fellow chapter members. Try scheduling a team lunch and learn with another audit group in the chapter. You can use this time to share audit techniques, discover resources for continuing education, or get everyone s thoughts on audit topics in the news. This will help reduce audit fatigue in your office and grow your knowledge of other resources in our audit community. Not sure who to reach out to? No problem, send a message to foxvalley.centralwi.iia@g mail.com and we can help connect you. 11

Why CIA? As the only globally recognized certification for internal auditors, becoming a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA ) is the optimum way to communicate understanding of The IIA s Standards and how to apply them. Adding the CIA credential to your resume, LinkedIn profile, and business card will help you stand out and demonstrate you are: A true expert who understands and can apply The IIA's Standards. A stronger, more competent professional. Equipped for career-advancing opportunities. A credible and trusted internal auditor. Differentiated from your peers. CIAs earn on average $38,000 more annually than those without a certification,* so get started now. Click here to learn more about how to register and for resources. If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. - John Quincy Adams 13

The Funny Bone Opportunity is missed by people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas Edison Excel Tip: Easy as Pie Charts Pie charts are one of the easiest charts to use in Excel. In addition, pie charts are the easiest charts to read and are a great visual for audiences of all reading levels. For example, I took a survey of favorite ice cream flavors of the audit staff in my office: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors 2 4 Chocolate 2 Vanilla 2 Strawberry None of the Above The key to using pie charts, or any chart is to know your audience. Keeping the information as simple as possible will enable you to display your results so that the data is comprehended by all. 14
