My presentation story College First job Still today Introduction Critical things to remember about presentations Will ALWAYS be nervous No one is born a perfect presenter Who have to develop a style Your style comes through with practice Something to remember: A great idea is NOTHING until it is properly presented
Planning Before you Prepare Image / first impression Makes or breaks you within first 2 to 3 minutes Must know your audience profile Goal is to match that profile Good side of audience and bad What are their image attributes Clothing (dress code) Language Manner Office/group style / culture Remember you will be judged even before you open your mouth
Preparation Mental Prep You must know your topic No memorization The knowledge must be instinctual You must believe in your topic Being authentic is critical In the slides and in the presentation
Work Prep Preparation continued You must prep an outline of your talk You are telling a story prep that way From outline to notes Notes section of PowerPoint 3 by 5 cards Do Not develop verbatim script (HUGE NO/NO) Practice, Practice, Practice Make the presentation instinctual No one presentation is EVER the same
Preparation, last one Image / Cloths Prep Select the right clothes, match audience Don t wear jeans to a bank Don t wear a suit to a gym presentation No wrinkles on cloths Men Shave, comb hair, no cologne what so ever Women Do not over do makeup or perfume Shoes Cell phone Get rid of it for the presentation
Presentation Skills-Hands What to do with your Hands Can be very distracting Can make you feel very awkward
Presentation Skills-Eyes Eye contact Two second rule Do not dart eyes back and forth Do not connect to same person consistently Try not to hold notes and talk into them
Presentation Skills- Movement Movement and Activity Key to success BUT Can show nervousness Do not stand still BUT. Do not pace Don t give the image of a caged animal to your audience Movement as an engagement tool
Presentation Skills-Voice Voice! Speed Tone Volume Protect yourself from the dredge presentation killer BEING MONOTONE
Presentation Skills-Words Your words Can tell a lot about you You must maintain your dignity Too much jargon or poor grammar and your creditability is shot Too many fancy words and you lose authenticity
Presentation Skills-Posture Posture and Formality Can lose authority if you don t control this Posture shows your interest and respect All about body language NEVER sit down NEVER have anyone completely behind you for longer than 5 to 10 seconds
Presentation Skills- Expressiveness Expressiveness and Passion In presentation world takes you from Good to Great Can cover up for a lackluster topic or knowledge EVERYONE wants to be inspired Inspiring speakers overcome any initial problem that might happen
Delivery-Just Before At location before presentation Get there at least an hour early Does everything work, is everything there Engage the group, walk around and talk to as many people as you can Spend 5 to 10 minutes with contact (at most) Try to shake hands with everyone Leave your phone in the car, or your pocket or bag. Do not wear it on your belt
Delivery-During Start on time and end on time. I will say it again Start on time and end on time At start up set time expectation I will be presenting for 45 minutes and cover 18 slides At start remember to thank the person who invited you to present If you do only two things do these Engage the audience (used the skills we discussed) Be authentic
Delivery-End Thank all in attendance for having you and thank your contact Make yourself very accessible for questions Try to be the last person to leave or don t leave till your contact leaves
During Delivery Problems At least one maybe even all of these will happen during a presentation Rudeness Using humor Getting too comfortable Handling questions Handling mistakes Handling your emotions Conquering your fears
