NOTIFICATION Ph.D. Registration 2018 Admission Applications are invited from eligible candidates for registration for research leading to the award of Ph.D. Degree of the university based on UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations 2016. The vacancy position under research supervising teachers as on 28/06/2018 is appended herewith. Those research supervising teachers who are not figured in the list, but have vacancies under them can also give consent to research scholars. The vacancy position shown in the list is as per the information furnished by each research centre, which is provisional. Submission of thesis will be treated as a vacancy. While submitting the application for registration, copies of the documents should be attached, as directed in the notification. 1. RESEARCH CENTRES 1.1 University Departments, Inter University/Inter School Centres, approved research centres in Government and Aided Colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and institutions formed by an act of either the State or Central government for promotion of research with at least two regular supervising teachers shall only be the research centres of the university. 1.2 However, the following shall be research centres, even if there is only one research supervising teacher in the centre: Government colleges Colleges under corporate management School of Tourism Studies 2. RESEARCH SUPERVISING TEACHERS 2.1 Only regular approved teachers of the University departments/colleges in Government & Aided stream affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and scientists in approved research centres are allowed to supervise the research work. Teachers of Retired/Adjunct/ Deputation/Transferred category are not eligible to act as research supervising teachers. 2.2 At any given point of time, the maximum number of research scholars under guidance of supervising teachers, in the posts mentioned below, shall be as detailed below : Professor - 3 M.Phil. and 8 Ph.D. scholars Page 1 of 7

Associate Professor - 2 M.Phil. and 6 Ph.D. scholars Assistant Professor - 1 M.Phil. and 4 Ph.D. scholars 2.3 In addition to the above, a supervising teacher can guide, if the candidate belongs to SC/ST category and is pursuing research under RGNF scheme. 2.4 Even if it exceeds the limit, each supervising teacher in the Statutory department can guide one more foreign student, selected from research scholars of foreign universities with which Mahatma Gandhi University has signed an agreement and also from those scholars who are recommended by the UCIC through scholarship exchange. 3. ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY 3.1 Candidates who have passed the Master s degree in any discipline or a professional degree of Mahatma Gandhi University or of other Universities, recognized as eligible for higher studies, thereto securing not less than 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions and have passed the Written Aptitude Test conducted by the university. In cases, where a candidate proposes to do research in a particular discipline with post graduation from other universities, in a discipline not offered by the university, the discipline must have been made equivalent to the corresponding discipline in the university. 3.2 A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time or for those who had obtained their Master s degree prior to 19th September 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale where grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks procedures. 3.3 A candidate whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and viva- voce is pending can apply for the Ph.D. programme, in the same area of research, in the same institution, provided they submit the mark list at the time of Doctoral Interview. 3.4. Candidates whose names have been registered as a member in the register maintained by the Institute of Chartered Accountants/Cost Accountants of India with 55% of marks shall be eligible to apply for Ph.D. Programme in Management Studies and candidates whose name has been registered as a member in the register maintained by the Company Secretaries of India shall be eligible to apply for Ph.D. Programme in Commerce. 3.5 The candidates who have appeared for the Written Aptitude Test may apply for Ph.D. registration after the result is out, but before the last date of the submission of Page 2 of 7

application. Those candidates who qualify the WAT, but have not qualified the PG with the required percentage of marks on or before 31/07/2018 are not eligible to apply. 4. MODE OF ADMISSION 4.1 Admission to the Ph.D. Programmes will be made on the basis of the following: (a) Written Aptitude Test (WAT) (b) Doctoral Interview 4.2 Those who qualify the test will be eligible to apply for research in the respective year only. 4.3 Those who have passed the Written Aptitude Test with minimum 50% marks and have applied for registration for Ph.D. programme will be called for a Doctoral Interview. 4.4 The selection will be on the basis of the marks obtained for the Doctoral Interview. Only candidates who secure a minimum mark of 50% will be recommended for registration for Ph.D. programme. For SC/ST candidates this minimum is 45%. 5. EXEMPTION FROM WRITTEN APTITUDE TEST 5.1 The following categories of candidates are exempted from passing Written Aptitude test. (a) JRF (UGC/CSIR) awardees. (b) Candidates who have qualified in the NET/SLET/GATE/GPAT/JEST or other tests conducted by such Government bodies such as UGC, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR and ICSSR. (c) MANF/RGNF/KSCSTE/INSPIRE Fellowship Awardees. (d) DST Women Scientist Awardees. (e) Scholars under Visweswaraya Ph.D. Scheme. (f) Scientists from the accredited R&D Institutions. (g) UGC Teacher Fellows. (h) M.Phil. degree holders in all disciplines. (i) (j) M.Tech./M.D./M.S./M.D.S. (Modern Medicine, Homoeopathy, Ayurveda, Ayush disciplines and Dentistry) degree holders (interdisciplinary research). Regular and permanent teachers from the University Departments. (k) Regular and permanent teachers from the Government/Aided Colleges in the state. 5.2 Exemption from Written Aptitude Test will be granted only to those who have been qualified on or before the last date for submission of applications. 6. REGISTRATION FOR RESEARCH 6.1 All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the University will be granted registration as full time research scholars except those who are eligible for initial part time registration as per Clause 9.1. 6.2 Candidates admitted to Ph.D. programme shall join the research centre immediately and their date of registration shall be deemed to be from the date of joining for Course Work succeeding registration. 6.3 However, in the case of candidates having the choice of any time registration the date of registration will be the date of joining the centre after obtaining the registration order. (ie; for scholars under Visweswaraya Ph.D. scheme, foreign students and students having scholarships like JRF, MANF, RGNF, KSCSTE, INSPIRE etc.) 7. COURSE WORK 7.1 Students admitted to Ph.D. programme are required to undertake a Course Work comprising of three papers (Course I, Course II and Course III) for a continuous period of six months as a preparatory to Ph.D. programme. 7.2 All the candidates are required to qualify the Course Work examination for confirmation of the registration. 8. PLACE OF RESEARCH Research shall be carried out by a research scholar in university departments or in approved research centres. 9. PART TIME RESEARCH 9.1 The following categories are granted initial part time registration before Course Work. (a) Regular and permanent teachers of the Statutory Departments of the University. (b) Regular and permanent teachers of Government/Aided Colleges within the state. (c) Permanent teachers of Government/Aided Higher Secondary schools in the state. (d) Permanent teachers of Government/Aided High Schools in the state. (e) Permanent teachers of Government/Aided Polytechnic institutions in the state. (f) Permanent teachers of IHRD colleges. (g) Teachers of unaided colleges and unaided wing of the aided colleges, affiliated to any of the universities including Deemed universities, in the state of Kerala and have put in a continuous period of two years service, at the time of registration. 9.2 The following categories are eligible to apply for conversion of their research to part time on successful completion of the course work. a) Regular employees working in Government/Quasi-government institutions. b) Scientists working in accredited R&D institutions and Clinical Psychologists attached to Government/Quasi-government organizations. c) Contract faculty appointed for a minimum period of one year in the regular academic departments of Mahatma Gandhi University, during the period of their contract. d) Project fellows, in the projects funded by the state/national/international agencies in Mahatma Gandhi University, during the tenure of contract period. e) Guest Lecturers and FDP substitutes working in Government colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, during their period of service. f) Guest Lecturers and FDP substitutes working in Aided colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, during their period of service. g) Teachers from unaided colleges and unaided wing of the aided colleges, affiliated to any of the universities including Deemed universities, in the state of Kerala. 10. PERIOD OF RESEARCH 10.1 The minimum period of research will be three years including Course Work. 10.2 In the case of M.Phil., M.Ed., M.Sc.(by research), Master of Letters, M.Tech. and M.D. degree holders, the minimum research period is two and a half years including the period of Course Work (six months), provided the research is in the same discipline in which the scholar has taken the above degree. 10.3 The maximum period of research will be six years for full time and eight years for part time research scholars. 10.4 A relaxation of two years in the maximum research period will be allowed in the case of Women candidates registered for full time. Persons with disability of more than 40%. 11. RESTRICTION ON EMPLOYMENT A full time research scholar shall not engage himself/herself in any other employment except in imparting instruction in an honorary capacity on a topic which forms the subject matter of his research in the institution where he is working. 12. FOREIGN APPLICANTS Applicants of foreign nationality will be considered for registration, only if they are on visas issued for research scholars/students and with the necessary clearance from the Government of India. 13. REGISTRATION FEE 13.1 The prescribed fee for Ph.D. registration is Rs. 1000/- (One Thousand Only) for general candidates and Rs. 750/- (Seven Hundred and Fifty Only) for SC/ST candidates. 13.2 The cost of the application is Rs. 25/-(Twenty Five Only). 13.3 The fee can only be remitted through the e-payment system and the receipt should be forwarded along with the application. 14. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION 14.1 The following formats can be downloaded from the link provided herewith or from the website www.mgu.ac.in from 1.07.2018 to 31.7.2018. application Page 5 of 7

agreement from the head of the research centre consent from the supervising teacher 14.2 Candidates shall procure a letter of agreement from the head of the research centre/ Principal (in the case of affiliated colleges) and letter of consent from the supervising teacher and submit them along with the application form. 14.3 Application should be attached with three copies of the Research Proposal in A4 size paper duly verified and recommended by the prospective research supervising teacher in the following format:- a) Title of research work, Research area, Discipline, Name and address of the candidate, Supervising teacher and Research centre (All these details should be on the facing page superscribed as RESEARCH PROPOSAL) b) Introduction including related studies c) Importance / Rationale of the study d) Objectives / Hypothesis e) Methodology including methods, sample and design of work f) Tentative work schedule (yearwise) g) Bibliography / Reference 14.4 The number of pages of the research proposal shall not exceed five. 14.5 Dated signature with the name and official address of the research supervising teacher shall be put on the first and last pages of the Research Proposal. 14.6 The filled in application with the following documents should be sent to the Deputy Registrar I (Academic), Mahatma Gandhi University, Priyadarshini Hills, Kottayam - 686 560. 15. LIST OF DOCUMENTS : e-payment receipt for Rs.1025/- ( Rs. 775/- in the case of SC/ST students). Letter of agreement of the head of the research centre, in the prescribed format, showing the number of research supervising teachers in the institution, for the concerned subject. Letter of consent from the research supervising teacher, in the prescribed format, including the vacancy position and details of research scholars under his/her guidance. Copy of photo identity card (Passport / PAN Card / Election Id). Relevant page of SSLC book to prove age. Copy of Transfer Certificate from the institution last studied. Copy of P.G. Degree Marklist. Copy of P.G. Degree Certificate. Copy of M.Phil. Degree Certificate ( if an M.Phil. degree holder). Eligibility Certificate for those who have taken P.G./M.Phil. Degree from other universities. Equivalency Certificate for those who propose to do research in a particular discipline, with P.G. from other universities, in a discipline not offered by this university. Copies of the certificates of NET / SLET / GATE / GPAT / JEST / DST / KSCSTE / MANF / RGNF / INSPIRE / JRF etc. or other tests conducted by such Government bodies as UGC, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR and ICSSR. Copy of the result of Written Aptitude Test 2018. (Downloaded from university web site in the case of those who have passed WAT) Caste Certificate in the case of SC/ST candidates or Non Creamy Layer Certificate in the case of OBC candidates. Medical Certificate issued by the medical board, in the case of differently-abled candidates. No Objection Certificate from the employer. Three copies of the Research Proposal in the prescribed format with the dated signature and official address of the research supervising teacher, on the first and last pages.
