Australia has the highest rate of reported incidence of food allergy, and numbers are growing at an alarming rate. In fact, one in ten babies born today will develop a food allergy. (Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia) An allergic reaction can quickly become serious and It is very important that we are all allergy aware, to minimise the risk to reaction and respond appropriately if a reaction occurs. As you are aware we have strict protocols in place at Columba to minimise risk. Our protocols include: No sharing of food All food eaten inside (icy-poles from Canteen excepted) Washing hands after eating Wiping down eating space and putting all left over food away These measures have been successful for our school and enable students with food allergies to move and work safely around the school. You can help promote Food Allergy Week by reinforcing these messages at home and by avoiding, where possible, sending some food items to school such as peanuts and boiled eggs. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. School board The Annual General Meeting for the School Board was held last night and Shara McAuley and Damien McKenna were elected unopposed to the Board. On behalf of the school community, I congratulate and thank Shara and Damien for accepting positions as Parent Representatives on the Board. Our grateful appreciation is extended to Deb McNamara and Donna Schreurs as our outgoing Board Members. Upcoming Excursions: Friday 13 May Round Robin Marist-Sion (Grade 5 & 6) Thursday 26 May Cross Country Competition Chairo (Cross Country Team) Congratulations to Anna, Addy, Mitch W. & Ben who have been selected as school leaders for the next fortnight. I am sure they will set a great example for all our senior students to follow. Many thanks to Pandora, Taleah, Mitch H. and Tyson, for an excellent effort as School Leaders. Well done to you all, a very efficient and reliable team. Family Conferences Just a further reminder that this year we will introduce Family Conferences instead of Parent-Teacher Meetings to Columba. This means each student will attend the meeting and talk about his/her learning, goals and challenges. Teachers, parents and the student will then make a plan for future learning together. These meetings are a means of furthering the partnership between home and school and ensuring that parents are well informed about their child/ children s progress. There will also be time set aside during the conference for parents to speak privately with the teacher/s if required. Family Conferences will be conducted on: Tuesday 17 May 4:00 pm 7:30 pm or Wednesday 18 May 4:00 pm 6:00 pm PICK_UP ZONE In order to assist with the smooth running of the Pick-Up Zone in the afternoon and to reduce congestion, we ask that parents trying to turn right into the Pick-up Zone continue up the hill, to the round-about and then join the queue of cars. Right-hand turn into the school to park your car is still permissible. Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation. PLAY GROUP THURSDAY MORNINGS 9.00am - 11.00am ALL WELCOME! This year the Family Conferences may be booked online. Attached to the newsletter is an information sheet for parents explaining the three quick and easy steps required to book a Conference through School Interviews. Develop a passion for learning. If you do you will never cease to grow! Anthony J DÁngelo
Prep Enrolments Enrolments for Prep 2017 are now open and Information Packages will be distributed to the local kinders this week. We would be grateful if school families could collect an Enrolment Form from the office and return it by Friday 13 May. This will enable us to know how many places are available for new families. Because of its outstanding success last year, enrolment tours and welcome to new preps for school families will take place in early Term Three and will be facilitated by the 2017 Buddy Grade. Its Cross Country time!! If you have visited Columba recently during school time, you may have seen the children running around and around in circles. No...they are not going crazy...they are training for Columba Cross Country to be held next Tuesday May 17th! We have expanded this event to include all grade levels this year and house points will be recorded, with the leading house winning the Cross Country House shield! Each level will race, with the fastest six 9/10, 11 and 12/13 year old boys and girls qualifying for the West Gippsland Division Cross Country at Chairo on Thursday May 26th. Event times for Columba Cross Country are as follows and we need some parents to help out guiding children on the track. Please let your child s class teacher know if you are able to help out! Grades 5 and 6 from 9.30am, Grades 3 and 4 from 10am, Grades 1 and 2 from 11.30am and Grade Prep from 12pm approx. All children have trained hard and are looking forward to the day. Please pack a full change of clothes for your child to change into should the weather be inclement as we plan to run the event even if there are a few showers! Looking forward to another great Columba event! Assembly The next Assembly is scheduled for Friday 20th May at 2:30 pm. The Prayer will be lead by students from 3/4 B. Please come along and help celebrate the achievements of the students. All families are welcome to attend each Assembly.
