On January 2, as you are packing up holiday decorations, please take a moment to watch the Rose Parade for the Donate Life float. The theme of the entire parade is Just Imagine. Through their life-changing experiences, the families of organ and tissue donors, living donors, and recipients of life-saving transplants know intimately the preciousness of time. The Donate Life float invites everyone to imagine...one More Day to remember a loved one, celebrate life, keep hope alive, and make a difference to others. Each year, the Donate Life float features floragraphs to memorialize organ, eye and tissue donors nationwide. In Kentucky, the 2012 floragraph honoree is Andrew Johnson from Marshall County with family in Barren County. Read more about Andrew in the article below. In this season of giving, let us all remember the important role we serve in giving life and precious time to families in need. By adding names to the Registry, you are giving a patient hope. You allow people to make a decision that may save a life. A decision they may not have taken the time to think about, until you asked. Thank you for your efforts. As we work to educate Kentucky about this mission, we think of those on the waiting list for a transplant. Those who imagine one more day with the ones they love. We honor donor families who also wished for one more day, but in their loss, gave another person life and another family time. Gift of Life Story: Andrew Johnson - Organ Donor MARSHALL/BARREN COUNTIES Andrew was an awesome young man of just eleven years a short life filled with love for everyone he knew. His eyes were crystal blue, and now they shine as stars in the night. He had a laugh that everyone wished they had, one that could make your belly hurt and a smile that could wrap around the world, his family and his teachers. A young man that, for his size, knew how to hug. Oh how he genuinely wrapped those arms around you and left a wonderful feeling that you had been hugged by him, and he meant it. His love and energy expanded into the great outdoors as he and his Dad loved to hunt turkey, deer and go fishing. Sports were another highlight in his life as he was a gifted athlete enjoying football, basketball and track. His teammates, described by others as being, forever touched and inspired. He loved spending time with family, grandparents and friends which most of the time he was the center of entertainment. Andrew was involved in an ATV accident July 2008, and five days later pronounced brain dead. As he lay lifeless in the hospital bed Andrew s Mother recalls, It was as if whispers from our angel, so profound and vivid, Save someone else Mom I CAN DO IT! The words never spoken but yet were so clear and strong to my ears. The contact was made with the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) and the feeling of a warm blanket was placed around us. The KODA team handled every situation with extreme reverence and compassion toward our family. Dark times led to a lighted path of giving giving the ultimate gift of life. We know that Andrew is honored because, though in our tragedy and having to let him go, the outcome has spread into such a positive new form of life. Our family does have peace and comfort in knowing that a part of Andrew lives on in many. Born in the fifth month, completing fifth grade and in the end became an organ donor giving five lifesaving organs. Andrew was our champion and only child, he was truly Heaven sent. Spreading awareness in their community, Lawrence Circuit Clerk Jodi Parsley and her staff participated in the Lawrence County Septemberfest Parade. Life is Cool is a Donate Life Coalition effort that stresses the importance of healthy organs and introduces students to the miracle of donation and transplantation. The KY Circuit Court Clerks Trust For Life assists in presenting this program to Kentucky school children. It was a picture perfect day when 101 golfers hit the links at Champion Trace Golf Club for the 13th Annual Satterwhite Memorial Golf Outing. This is the primary fundraiser for the KY Circuit Court Clerks Trust For Life Satterwhite Recipient Assistance Fund each year. 100% of the funds raised from this event directly benefit Kentucky transplant patients in financial crisis. Winchester community leaders honored retired Circuit Clerk Arthur Whitey Walson for his commitment to organ donation. A reception was held in downtown Winchester on Sept. 20, and Clark Regional Medical Center made a $1000 to the Trust in honor of Mr. Walson. Clark Regional Medical Center was recently recognized for outstanding performance and advocacy in tissue donation. Mr. Walson was an integral part of the creation of the Trust For Life in 1992. Today, more than 60% of Clark County residents are on the Registry! Coroner Robert Gayheart announced that Mr. Walson was nominated for the Eye Bank Association of America s National Gift of Sight Award for extraordinary contributions to eye and corneal donation and sight restoration. Pictured above, and seated to Mr. Walson s left is retired Circuit Judge and cornea recipient, James S. Chenault. Dale McMillen is a sports enthusiast, coach, and transplant recipient. Dale and a squad of dedicated committee members created the Northern Kentucky All Sports Reunion to gather teammates, rivals, coaches, and officials to reminisce and reconnect. They also raised more than $1400 for the KY Circuit Court Clerks Trust For Life and educated many about donation. Dianne Murray, Boone Co. Circuit Clerk, addressed the crowd, and John Middleton, Kenton Co. Circuit Clerk, joined in the day along with several deputy clerks as volunteers. WE KNOW IT S WORKING... The highlight of the day was when one young lady came up after hearing Dale s story and said she wanted to be a registered organ donor right away. 150 supporters joined the Trust at the Louisville Bats Game to raise awareness about organ donation. Sidney the Kidney and Eye-Da entertained the crowd. Shane Zoeller, with son Ethan who is waiting on a transplant, threw the first pitch. Stephanie King Logsdon and her son helped 8 year old recipient, Max, throw t-shirts to the crowd. In addition to a fun awareness night, the Bats donated a portion of group ticket sales to the Trust!

Jodie Music has worked at the Johnson County Circuit Court Clerks Office for more than 23 years. I usually work driver s license. I remember when the Trust first started. I didn t know much about donation at the time, but over the years I have learned a lot. I think it is a very important program. One of my co-worker s mother-in-law was a kidney recipient, and I learned a lot about donation from them, explains Jodie. It seems like more people support donation now. The attitudes have changed over the years, and now almost everyone says yes. Jodie enjoys working with the public, and her friendly disposition is well-received from customers. Johnson Co. Circuit Clerk Vicki Rice explains, Jodie greets everyone with a smile. That is why our donation numbers are always so good. She takes the time to ask each and every person, and she s nice to everyone. My staff knows how important the Trust For Life is to me as Clerk, and they are wonderful. They remember to smile and ask those all-important questions. I believe it s all in how you ask. I try to be friendly to everyone, and just ask every time. I always tell new trainees that the person will either say yes or no, but you just have to ask. These days, almost everyone says yes, says Jodie. She is exactly right! Johnson County consistently has more than 70% of residents donate $1 to the Trust. They have been in the TOP 10 EVERY MONTH since the TOP 10 LIST began in 2006.
