BURSLEDON SCHOOLS PTA Many thanks to all those who came or were able to support this year s Summer Fete on the 9 th June. It was a fantastic success the weather was kind to us which brought everyone out to enjoy the delights of the Summer Fete - an incredible 2,975.55 was raised. Since the fair we have raised another 48 at the cake sale bringing the total to 3,023.55. The money will be used for the benefit of both schools and we will notify parents when we know how this money will be spent. This year the Summer Fete was held at the Infant School which worked extremely well. The car park was home to the police car (with dressing up clothes), an electric black London taxi, Fire Engine (briefly as it was called away) and an ice-cream van. The grass area outside the front of the school was transformed with an array of stalls and bunting which created a Village Green effect and the playground and field provided the ever popular BBQ and Popcorn, as well as the PA system and many more stalls and games. The Year 2 classrooms were turned into a café, a pamper area (nail painting, face painting, massage and clothing) and the chocolate & bottle tombola stalls. The hall provided entertainment in the form of Bursledon s Got Talent and a Martial Arts demonstration from our pupils as well as the raffle. We would wish to thank all those who contributed to the success of the day; The Fair sponsors: Brambles Estate Agency and Harris Bathrooms Grapefruit Graphics who donated the banners Dominos Pizza and Owton s Butchers Morrisons (via Eloise s Mum) for donating 300 hot dog rolls Co-operative, Southampton (via Millie s Dad) for donating hot dog rolls and hot dogs Adam Jones & Elliott Exton for providing the sound system and the compering Mrs. Bishop (Emily & George s Mum) for cutting the grass in the front of the school, providing the bunting and transforming the outside area. Parents and family members who donated cakes, books, bears, chocolate and bottles Our staff team and local community who gave their time to run stalls and Games

The fire brigade and police for bringing along a fire engine and police car for the children to enjoy. The PTA Team and their families who gave up many, many hours of their own time organising the event, raising sponsorship, gathering raffle prizes, organising our first pre-sales raffle and putting the school back straight ready for the Monday morning. Most of all we wish to thank all the children who brought so much fun and laughter to the event. If you wish to find out more about joining The Friends of Bursledon, a separate group of parents (subject to DBS checks) who can be called upon to help at various events at the school but are not necessarily expected to attend the meetings, then please contact Mrs. Stubbs in the Infant School Office. DISCOS The Year R and Year 1 disco held on 7 th June was a great success and raised 190. The children all really enjoyed themselves and the DJs, Adam and Elliot, did a great job in getting all the children dancing. The PTA, staff and the Senior Leadership Team have been looking at suitable dates to hold the discos for Years 2 & 3 and Years 4 & 5 before the end of July. Unfortunately with so many other events happening before the end of term there are no free dates available for the PTA, Staff and Senior Leadership to provide a safe environment for the children to enjoy the disco. The PTA appreciate that the Year 2 children will not have their disco with the Year 3 children this term but will make sure that the first disco in the Autumn Term will be for the new Year 3 and Year 4 children. Mrs. L. Dyer (Co Chair) Mrs. S. Stubbs (Co Chair) Mrs. S. White (Secretary)

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR WHEN WEARING THE BURSLEDON SCHOOLS UNIFORM It has been brought to our attention that some infant school children are being allowed to relieve themselves whilst walking home from school. The schools would like to politely ask that when children are wearing their school uniform they should behave in an appropriate manner that reflects the value of the schools Love, Respect and Aspire. Your co-operation is much appreciated. SCHOOL LIBRARY Please could all school library books be returned to the Discovery Centre in the Junior School and the library in the Infant School by Friday 13 th July latest. If your child cannot find their library book please could we ask for your help in looking for it. Is it in the school bag, at Grandma s house, down the back of the sofa, in the car..? ATTENDANCE The attendance figures for each year group for last week were:- Foundation 94.30% Year 1 96.15% Year 2 95.13% Year 3 94.25% Year 4 94.74% Year 5 97.19% Year 6 91.58% BRONZE AWARD SPORTS MARK We are delighted that the Junior School has earned the Bronze Award Sports Mark this year. As part of the school s application we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs and are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. Thank you to all who supported us.

SCIENCE During the Autumn Term last year pupils from Year 5 entered an engineering competition as part of their homework. We were thrilled to find out last week that Josh, 5H, was shortlisted from 6,000 entries across the South of England and his design of a dictionary pen was displayed at the University of Southampton. SPORTS A group of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils entered a Quad Kids Athletics Competition at Hamble School and came 5 th overall out of 17 schools. Caitlin, Year 5, came 2 nd overall in the 75m sprint.

STOMP WORKSHOP Last week Years 2 to Years 6 took park in a STOMP Workshop with Pete from Nebula Artistic. It was fantastic fun and the children thoroughly enjoyed learning a STOMP routine and then putting what they had learnt into their own group routines which had to include each member performing a solo! They loved sharing their choreography with the whole school in performance assemblies at the end of the day. Even the staff enjoyed learning it!

AIR QUALITY PROJECT A group of children from Bursledon Junior School have been involved in an exciting Air Quality project. They spent time with the school travel planning team and entered a campaign competition outlining a range of ways that they could try to improve the quality of air around Bursledon. They have already begun to implement changes around the school including: Place test tubes to collection information about the quality of air Promoting car shares to staff Handing out information about idling Presenting information at the Summer Fete Whole school assemblies and competitions to share the important message Incredibly the team won the competition and were invited to Winchester Science Centre to present their campaign to a group of local councillors from Hampshire and Southampton City Council. They made a video about the work they have done so far to combat this issue and got their video shown in the Planetarium!! A huge well done to the team for all of their hard work to help the quality of air for the local community!
