Phrasal verbs and gerund GRAMMAR

Content In this lesson you will learn about various phrasal verbs used with gerunds. Learning Outcomes Learn about different phrasal verbs used with gerunds. Create sentences using these phrasal verbs Make sentences based off pictures with phrasal verbs

Can you remember? Phrasal Verbs consist of a verb plus a particle. The particle can be a preposition or an adverb. Examples: To look up: To consult a reference book I need to look up this information. Phrasal verbs can also have more than one particle to look out for: to try to notice something/someone I told him to look out for thieves.

Examples: Please note Some phrasal verbs are followed by the gerund for of the verb (+ing) look forward to: anticipate with pleasure +ing = to be looking forward to I am looking forward to the concert on Friday! In this lesson we are going to look specifically at phrasal verbs

Please note Look forward to + gerund To be looking forward to +gerund Examples: I look forward to hearing from you. He s looking forward to going on vacation. The kids are looking forward to Christmas.

Writing What are you looking forward to? What are you NOT looking forward to? Use the gerund form. EX) I am looking forward to Friday, even though it s only Tuesday. 1) I look forward to 2) I am looking forward to 3) I am not looking forward to.

Please note To give up (to quit) + gerund Examples: I m giving up smoking for real this time! He gave up gambling last year. She gave up looking for her cat after 3 months.

Please note To concentrate on + gerund (go focus on) Examples: I can t concentrate on reading if there s music playing. She concentrates on cooking really hard! The students concentrated on learning the basics during the first year.
