Materials List Here are the materials you will need for the reports in this book. Materials for each report are also listed on the Teacher Information Page for every report. Most of the materials are everyday school supplies; a few will need to be purchased. Needed for all reports: file folder or 12 x 18 (30.5 x 46 cm) construction paper folder per student copy paper at least four pages per student glue to attach reproducibles to the inside of the folder. Rubber cement gives the nicest results, but is NOT to be used by students. An adult will need to assemble the completed folders if rubber cement is used. markers, crayons, or colored pencils Needed for some reports: chenille stems (pipe cleaners) cardboard plain, brown, sturdy cardboard that boxes are made from. Tagboard is not stiff enough. index cards for note-taking bamboo skewers or straws modeling clay foil stars school milk cartons scrap construction paper white glue 1996 by EVAN-MOOR CORP. 2 More Than a Report EMC 558

How to Make Mor More Than a Report a Snap! Research Skills The ability and experience level of your class will determine how much teaching or reviewing of research skills is needed. Obviously, these reports will be more successful if your class has had practice with research strategies, note-taking skills, and bibliography entries. How to Assign the Reports All reports will be individualized. Many use the annotated list at the end of the directions. You can assign the report in several ways: let students choose their topic you assign each topic let them pick a topic out of a hat assign reports alphabetically Student Direction Sheets All reports come with two Student Direction Sheets. These will help you assign the report and guide your students along the way. Discuss every step of the directions with your students, modeling where appropriate. Assess understanding of each section before going on. Explain that the box in front of each step is for them to check off each completed step. The first time you do a report, keep samples or take pictures of finished products to use with future classes. Hint: make overlays of the reproducible forms for each report. Display them on the screen as you go over the directions, pointing out each section as it is explained. Lined-Paper Masters The final copy of most of the reports is completed on unlined paper. To help students write neatly and in a straight line, make up a class set of lined masters: take one sheet of ruled paper (the kind they use every day) trace over each line using a ruler and a fine-tipped black marker photocopy a class set laminate Students paper clip blank paper to the master; the guidelines show through. Bibliography Formats A number of More Than a Report projects require students to list resources used in a bibliography. On the inside back cover, you will find a chart showing how to write bibliographic entries for several types of resources. Reproduce for each student or post for student reference. 1996 by EVAN-MOOR CORP. 3 More Than a Report EMC 558

Pipe-C ipe-cleaner People Four reports (All About Me, Women of America, Black Americans, and Incredible People) use pipe-cleaner people as an engaging visual. These are easy to make and pose. They can be dressed in a variety of materials and still be light enough to attach to a piece of cardboard for display. Practice making a pipe cleaner person yourself before guiding students through the process. Give directions one step at a time; don t go on to the next step until everyone is ready. 1. Use the first pipe cleaner to create the head and arms. 2. Use the second pipe cleaner to create the torso and legs. twist around neck wrap around twisted part of first pipe cleaner 3. Twist the pipe cleaner to create the rest of the body shape. twist at waist bend out feet and hands Your pipe cleaner person can be posed in any position, performing any feat dancing, sitting, jumping, even standing on its head! Caution children not to bend the people too many times they start to look strange. 1996 by EVAN-MOOR CORP. 4 More Than a Report EMC 558

MI VT CT RI NJ DE MD Washington DC All About Me What better way to begin the school year! This report gives all students a chance to express themselves and to let others know how special they are. The finished projects generate classroom conversations about individual uniqueness. They also help to produce a class team of individuals who know and understand each other and are thus better able to work together. Completed reports can be shown off in the library or other areas of the school that get a lot of foot traffic. Each More Than a Report is an expression of individuality and creativity. Students contribute their own personal touches. They are very exciting to see! The completed report is also an excellent memory of their year in your class. It is something that will go in the box of keepers that come home from school. Have fun! Another excellent time to do this project is just prior to Open House in the spring.
