The summer school program is a tuition based classroom program designed for students who participate fully in the regular curriculum of our school district. It is not designed for students with significant deficits in reading, math or writing skills. Specially trained teachers are NOT available for summer school for students with special education needs. For students on in Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the school district provides during the regular school day a Free Appropriate Education, in the following manner: The general curriculum is followed but special education teachers may not use the same materials and the pace of coverage of material may vary based on student need. The special education teacher may use different methods of presenting material to enable more effective learning. Different methods and timelines for turning in assignments may be followed. Additionally, time in class may be spent trying to strengthen reading, writing and math deficits. Tests and assignments may be modified in length and time allowed. However, entire course must be complete within the 3 week period. Other varied adaptations may be prevalent in the special education class dependent on the needs of the student. Students on an Individualized Education Plan may fail a summer school course if the teacher determines that the learning environment is adequate and there is simply minimal effort to learn on the part of the student. Repeating classes will result in the need to spend an additional year in school at the senior high school level. The Bixby Schools provide for extra time in school for students on individualized education plans. Students may stay in school to age twenty-one or until the completion of a secondary education program signified by earning the appropriate class credits for graduation. I understand the above information and still want my child to enroll in the summer school program. Furthermore, I acknowledge that the school district offers a free program during the school day and I am choosing to pay for the summer school program.
